Chapter 45 - Chapter 65: Gone

As soon as the stick fell on the ground with a sound, Kaori eyed it with disappointment.

Then she looked back at Tim as if nothing had happened, "How could you beat someone up like that? Are you even human?"

Tim had lost his ability to speak since he was just too stupefied that Kaori had that much strength in her hand even if she was a girl and a skinny one at that. When he finally met her eyes however, her gaze had changed back to a glare.

"I remember telling you to stay away from him," She stated, "You don't seem to listen to me, do you?"

"I'll tell you again, and if you forget it, don't blame me for personally turning your life into a hell." She gritted before saying gravely, "Stay away from him."

When she locked her eyes with Tim, he felt as if she had hypnotized him that he didn't even notice when Yamaken lunged on him like a tiger again.

"What's going on over there?!" The voice of the vice principal could be heard exactly when Yamaken landed a strong blow on Tim's nose.

The vice principal was left frozen on his spot when he saw Yamaken punch Tim. But after he processed it within a minute, he roared at the two boys, "You two! You are causing trouble again!" He walked closer in hurry. The crowd of students started to part and make way for the vice principal.

At this, both Yamaken and Tim quickly stood up and tried to stand behaving like two good boys. But the vice principal was far from being convinced by their current attitude, "It is you two! Come with me to the office, the both of you! Now!"

But then, Kaori stepped in. She abruptly turned Tim around and slapped him full on his face, leaving everyone dumbfounded.

"Y–you! How dare you act with violence right before me?" The vice principal roared, completely taken aback by Kaori's sudden move, "Follow me, too!"

And so, Kaori obediently walked along with the other two, following the vice principal ahead while Willia was left behind with the crowd.

Staff room.

The vice principal lead the three students into the room and found their class teacher, handing them over to her for a strict lesson.

As soon as the vice principal left, she scolded the children.

"How in the world did you two make your way into here with such accusations?" She demanded strongly, looking at Kaori and Yamaken who had their eyes down at their feet. They were known for their good grades and great personality and so the teacher demanded a reason.

She let out a sigh and when her eyes landed back on Tim, she roared at him again, "Will you ever stop causing me troubles?"

Then she let out another sigh before trying to say calmly, "The exam is nearing, you guys. You need to focus on your studies now, not go around picking fights inside the school grounds!" She snapped at the two boys. "I beg you to be sensible and do what you are suppose to be doing and let me make myself clear on something. If I ever receive any complaints on any of you boys," She eyed Yamaken and Tim sternly, "I'll remember to deduct points from your grades."

Tim snorted at this penalty while the other two remained indifferent.

Their class teacher then handed Tim a yellow card along with a paper and a pen. "You know what to do with the paper and the pen. This is your first card, if you get another one again, I'll call your parents in," She glared at Tim who took the paper and pen casually, going to a corner of the staff room to write his letter of apology.

Kaori was expecting to be punished with writing a letter of apology, too but she was faced with something otherwise.

"It's okay," Her teacher assured her, "From what I heard of your actions, my guess is that you aren't really a part of the main fight. You can go back."

Kaori quietly glanced at Yamaken who still had his head bent down.

Seeing her worried face, the teacher let out a quiet laugh and reassured Kaori, "I'll release him soon, too. I just need to know the cause of this sudden fight."

Understanding her teacher, she nodded and took a hurried leave from the room.

"Now then," The teacher looked back at Yamaken, "Tell me, young man. Why did you break into a fight?"

Kaori sighed deeply, walking away from the door.

All she had to do right now was going back home lazily.

"Kaori!" Willia gave a whack on her friend's back, "What was it all about? Why did they fight? What happened?"

Kaori looked back at her friend, "I don't know, she kicked me out saying that I didn't have anything to do with it is what she thought. So I couldn't listen in. Why are you still at school anyway?"

Willia replied, "I was going home with Melissa and Tom but I noticed the big crowd in the back of the field. So I told them to go ahead of me since I thought that maybe it wasn't something worth looking at. But when I heard other kids saying that it was Yamaken and Tim breaking into a fight, I ran to you as fast as I could. Where's Wood, Dylanthy and Robin, though? I thought you were with them."

"No I wasn't," Kaori answered, "Well I was with Wood for some time. But I saw him off long ago. Robin must've gone home, too and I didn't see Dylanthy."

"Oh," Willia nodded slowly.

"Anyway, Thanks for running to me," Kaori smiled weakly, "If you hadn't, who knows how much more beatings he would have to endure."

"That was really rough, you know?" Said Willia, "This shouldn't be let go of so easily."

Kaori smirked, "Even if they do let go of this with just a letter of apology and a yellow card, I have already handed his life's red card over to him. Let's see how he obeys."

Willia turned around sharply, "They seriously let him go like that?"

"Yeah," Kaori shrugged, "He's writing the letter in the staff room."

"Crazy," Willia shook her head in disbelief, "What about Yamaken?"

"She wanted to ask him some questions."

"No," Willia shook her head again, "I meant, what about his wounds and bruises?"

Kaori sighed, "He can heal himself at most. That much isn't anything to us."

"Wow, respect," Willia chuckled. "Oh right, I respect you for your coolness, too!" She suddenly got excited and added earnestly, "The way you made your perfect entrance right at the perfect moment and stole the show with your slashes of words, whew! Just awesome!" She threw her thumbs up with a wide grin.

Kaori laughed heartily at Willia's compliments.

And then Willia became all sly again, "Are you sure you don't like Yamaken?"

Kaori whined instantly, "Not that again!"

"Come on, Kaori!" Willia said desperately, "Your attitude at that moment would make everyone think the same! I'm pretty sure half the school already agrees to that, that you guys are a thing."

Kaori shook her head, "No we aren't. Besides, aren't I protective over everyone? You saw it, too, right? So stop being misled!"

Willia reacted with frustration, "I just can't add it up! It feels so different when it's Yamaken. I don't know why," She looked at Kaori, "But I ship you two, I'm serious. After today, actually. That moment when you talked about personally turning Tim's life into a hell if Yamaken was to be bothered again really pierced through my heart. Gasp gasp."

"Willia," Kaori laughed helplessly, "I don't even know what to say anymore..."

Willia joked, "Okay, then don't."

The two walked out of the building, laughing among themselves.

But there were questions that still sorrounded Kaori's mind and she wanted the answers to them so bad.

𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘠𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘛𝘪𝘮? 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘠𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵?

These two questions were the main ones that bothered her all the way to her home and even after.

In the evening.

Residence of Kaori's.

Kaori entered her bedroom with a glass of iced tea in her hand.

She was wearing comfy oversized pajamas and sleeping tops with a fluffly slipper. Her hair was tied up messily into a small bun and a checkered ribbon was wrapped around her head.

She plopped down on the edge of her bed and put the glass of drink on the bedside cabinet. She opened one of the drawers on top and took out a piece of paper – the one she had received from Xeno – Haru's letter.

"𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦" – was what Xeno had said but Kaori was never courageous enough to do it.

She stared at the paper for a long time before letting out a deep sigh – preparing to open the letter.

She slowly unfolded the paper to find out that it was bigger than she had expected. She glanced over at the neat handwriting of her best friend. The clean, beautiful letters covered the page, leaving the old marks of ink to permanency.

She stared at the page, complimenting the beauty for a moment before starting to read.

Kaori frowned, "𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵..?"

The next day.

Kaori couldn't sleep a wink last night. Because of two things in particular – she had Haru's letter in her mind and she had Yamaken, regarding whom she had tons of questions clouding her head.

There wasn't anything she could do about the first one, so she focused herself on the second one. Although the regrets never seemed to get erased from her heart.

She came to school earlier so that she could ask Yamaken those questions that kept her from sleeping all night and find out the answers.

However, Yamaken never came to school.

Not that day.... Nor on the other days that the week had left.

It was as if Yamaguchi Yamaken had vanished again, just like that day when Kaori had met him last, before parting ways from the clan.
