Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

I stared. "Lightbloods? Is this a joke?" I asked, looking from one to another. The boys glanced at each other, an unreadable on both their faces.

"You don't know?" Luke asked.

"What do you mean? All I know is that I've been kidnapped and forced to drink this poison thing for two months and now suddenly you come and save me and call me a Lightblood. I need some explaining," I said.

"Ok," Will replied, "but after we bring you to the Infirmary."

"The infirmary? But I'm fine I don't need to go there," I protested.

"Not that infirmary."

"Then what-"

"Stop asking questions. We'll tell you everything once you get there and you're feeling better," Luke interrupted. He was obviously the more impatient one. Once I was free, I put on arm around each boy because I could barely walk myself. Luke and Will walked me over to a wall and Will said something in a language I didn't understand.

"Apertus Leuk," he said. My eyes widened as a square of blinding white light formed on the wall. I gasped.

"WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!" I yelled and tried to squirm away but failed. The two boys grinned at me and stepped through the glowing square, taking me with them.

For a second all I could see was the glowing white light. Then my feet collided with the ground and I tumbled forward, falling on green grass. I stood up, wincing at the pain it brought to stand. I saw Will and Luke not far away. They probably didn't even fall. They got to me and helped me walk and led me to an alley not too far away. I looked around frantically. I had just gotten out of being kidnapped, and that was because I was in an alley. "What are you doing?" I asked.

Just be quiet and wait," Luke said. He muttered, "invisibilia."

I waited for something to appear, but nothing happened. I could tell the word Luke has just said meant 'invisible' and I watched a man walked through the alley and not notice us. Then Luke put his hand to the cold stone wall and said, "Apertus. Ego sum Luke Williams." I watched in awe as the wall opened and revealed large metal double doors. Luke put his hand in front of a black screen on the side and it scanned his hand and a green light flicked up, opening the doors, showing a set of stairs going down. We slipped through and descended down the steps as the wall of the alley closed up again.

"This is the Infirmary?" I asked. He nodded. We were in a massive room with staircases going down all around. The walls were white and all the furniture was marble. Huge chandeliers hung on the ceiling and a mural with a knight in silver armor holding a sword pointing down with both hands took up one wall. There were men and women running around, going downstairs with metal rolling trays of tools I'd never seen before. Will and Luke carried me to a desk with a woman working at it.

"Nora, we found her bruised and poisoned. You can see she's a Lightblood. Is there a free room?" Will asked the lady. I rolled my eyes. Again with this Lightblood nonsense. Nora nodded and gestures for us to come to her side or the desk and into another glowing white square behind her on the wall. The two boys led me through it.

I landed rather gently on the infirmary bed. This was much smoother than the first time I did this. The room was big and had white walls and two chairs and a small glass table. There was a light hanging from the ceiling with four glass crystals hanging down from it. Luke and Will were standing at the foot of the bed.

"The nurse is coming," Will said, "but right now we can answer all the questions you have." I nodded.

"First of all, what's a Lightblood?" I asked.

"There are three people in the world. Redbloods, Lightbloods, and Darkbloods. Redbloods, as you can probably guess, are normal people. Ordinary, with red blood. They don't know we exists. Darkbloods are half human half monster. They look like humans, but they have black blood and like to drink the blood of Redbloods and Lightbloods. They're kind of like vampires. When they bite Redbloods, they die because a Darkblood bite would kill a normal human. We survive bites because of our Lightblood bracelets. They have a Darkblood leader. Lightbloods, like the three of us, are the ones who hunt and kill the Darkbloods to keep the us all safe. We have white blood. And all Lightbloods also have a leader, like the Darkbloods. The Redbloods don't know that there's people with blood that isn't red like them. They might encounter a Lightblood or a Darkblood, but we have spells, as you've seen when I made the portal, that trick them into seeing red blood on our cheeks and when we bleed. For our spells, we use Latin. Us Lightbloods are the most important, because without us, Redbloods would be extinct." Will said. I gaped at them disbelievingly.

"How did I not know that I'm a Lightblood? And how could you tell?" I asked.

"You're parents never told you. And I could tell because all the Lightbloods have extremely bright eyes. Haven't you ever wondered why your eyes look so unusual?" Luke said.

"But my mom never had these eyes. And she said my dad didn't. And my parents are both human because when I bleed, it's red blood. Not white blood," I said. This was all very confusing.

"I think your mom and dad were ex-hunters. When a Lightblood decided they don't want to live a life hunting, they take off their bracelet and the brightness in their eyes go out and they can live a normal Redblood life. But they still bleed white," Will said. "What's your name by the way? We still don't even know who you are."

"I'm Alissa Wood." I replied. Luke and Will stared at me incredulously.

"The Redblood and Lightblood hybrid. Daughter of Jia Wood," Will said after a long moment of silence. I stared.

"What? You just said I'm a Lightblood," I said, very confused. My mind was spinning with questions.

Before Will could say more, a lady dressed in blue scrubs with pink dyed hair and magenta Lightblood eyes walked into the room. Her scrubs were smeared with something that looked like white paint. White blood. She looked at me with kind eyes.

"Hi. I'm Ashley."

"I'm Alissa," I replied.

"I know," Ashley said, "the famous hybrid." I smiled awkwardly. Is that who I am now? The hybrid? Ashley looked at Will and Luke. "I'm sorry but you boys will have to leave. You can wait outside if you like."

Will looked disappointed but Luke just took Will by the arm and dragged him away, closing the door behind him. Ashley turned to me and smiled.

"Ok. What's wrong?" She asked. I told her about the poison I drank several times a day for two months and how I was tied to my bed the whole time. Ashley frowned. "We can fix that right up," she said.

It felt like a long time while Ashley drew an invisible shape with her finger and said "sanatio" four times to heal up the rope burns and give me different treatments for the poison. Nothing seemed to work. I felt fine, just different. Like the poison just changed something, not hurt me. Ashley was about to give me another medicine when I felt a shaking feeling. Then there was a big crashing noise coming from the whole place. There were screams and yells outside the room.

"Stay here!" Ashley yelled and headed out. What was happening?

"Ashley, wait!" I was moving to get up from the bed when the light came crashing down. One of the glass crystals cut my leg. "Ouch!" I yelled in surprise more than pain. I didn't even look at the blood dripping down. I got up and opened the cabinets, looking for a bandaid. I heard yelling and there was a loud alarm ringing through the Infirmary. I scavenged through several cabinets for the bandaid. After a few moments, the alarm stopped and everything was quiet again. I turned around and the light that had fall went back up on the ceiling and back to normal. A repairing spell. I turned back to the cabinets, rummaging for anything to cover up the big cut. The door opened and Ashley came inside. When she saw me, her face paled.

"Sorry-I was getting a bandaid—" but I stopped short when Ashley ran to a table with a red button. She banged her palm down on it

and kept staring at me. "What..." I started, but stopped short when around ten people with shimmering Lightblood eyes flooded into the room. Once they caught sight of my leg, their eyes widened. Was this really how they reacted to blood? They should be used to it by now. I glanced down a looked at the cut. It shouldn't look that bad. But once I saw my leg I gasped and paled. I looked up at everyone with extreme horror.

The blood was black.
