Before I know it, Daniel is waking me up, the sun shining through the window. I am disoriented at first, but then remember I am in a hotel.
"Wakey, wakey. We have to leave now to make it before nightfall. Come on."
I get up off the bed and put on a pair of jeans and a flannel. I make sure everything is still in my bag and we head out. We swing by a grocery store to buy some granola bars and sandwiches to bring with us. We walk through the forest in silence. After three hours we take a break. I sit down on a rock and grab a granola bar. Daniel takes a seat next to me.
"Daniel, I meant to ask. What are you?"
"Well, I am what is known as a guide. I help other supernatural beings fulfill their destinies when I am chosen for the task."
"How do you know when you are chosen?"
"It's a ringing in my head and a name. I don't get any other information until I meet them. Guides can tell everything about their mission once they meet who they must guide."
"When did you find out about me?"
"About a month ago I heard the ringing and your name. I was lucky because I already knew you from school, so the next time I saw you in math class I knew what I had to do."
I stand there in silence processing, that is so cool!
"I know, pretty pathetic, isn't it?"
"Not at all, I think it's awesome! I mean you get to help people, it's your destiny."
Daniel smiles, "I guess it's pretty cool."
We continue to make our way towards the safe house. By six in the evening, we walked out of the forest to see a huge house. I turn to Daniel.
"This place is huge, is there others here?"
"Well, yes. This is a student house."
I am shocked, "A student house, who are the students?"
"Well, this is not exactly a safe house, it is student housing for the school of magic called Scholam Enim Donatur. Which is the School for the Gifted in Latin. I stop in my tracks in front of the big house, I remain silent thinking about how I am going back to school. Wait, I'm going back to school!
"Daniel, I am attending this school?" I ask with confusion and a hint of anger in my voice.
"Um," he stutters, "well, you see. Um..."
I roll my eyes, "you know you could have just told me. I love school."
"You are on a weird one, huh." He chuckles.
I laugh, "the weirdest."
We walk into the house and enter a grand hall. There is a chandelier and a very open room with stairs to the left leading to the second floor. I can already tell I will get lost in here.
"Hello!" Daniel calls out.
A girl comes running down the stairs with a lot of energy.
"Hi, I'm Alana! What's your name?"
I was about to answer, however, Daniel beats me to it.
"This is Kate, she is new to the school."
"Oh my god! We are going to be great friends!"
I hear another girl call out for Alana from down the hall.
"Sorry, got to go! I will catch up with you later and show you around."
"Okay," I say as she disappears around the corner.
I turn to Daniel and give him a puzzled look, why would he say my name is Kate?
"Follow me, we will talk in your room."
I follow him up the spiral staircase and walk down the hall to a fully furnished bedroom. The room was all black and white with some accented colors placed in all the right places.
"What the hell is going on Daniel?"
"They cannot know your real name; it is to keep you safe. We don't need others hearing Chara is at this school. They will come looking. Everyone here will know you as Kate Smith. Your powers will be teleportation, telekinesis, and pyrokinesis. In front of the other students and teachers, you cannot use your other powers. The teachers will help you with these three powers and I will be helping you on the side to teach you to have to use your other powers."
That's a lot to take in, but it makes a lot of sense. At least the powers the teachers will teach me will be very useful. I wonder how long I have to here for, not that I am complaining about being back in school. I hope that I can prolong this big fight for as long as possible.
"You should get some sleep, in the morning is your first day and you don't want to be exhausted. You will have to pick up your schedule tomorrow in the principal's office. Goodnight Chara."
"Goodnight Daniel."
Daniel leaves the room and I am left alone. I walk over to the bookshelf to look at what books I could read. They are all about different powers and creatures that are in the world. If you asked me a week ago if I believed in any of these creatures, I would say you are crazy for considering it. I decide to take a better look at the books tomorrow and head off to sleep.
In the morning I wake up to a knock at my door.
"Yeah!" I shout in response.
"You have to get ready for school! We leave in 20!" Alana yells back.
You have got to be kidding me, 20 minutes! Ugh. I throw on a pair of ripped jeans and a cropped purple tank top. I rush quickly downstairs and into the main foyer. As I reach the bottom of the stairs, there are two girls waiting there.
"Hey Kate, this is my best friend; Ryla. Ryla, this is our new dormmate, Kate."
"Nice to meet you," Ryla greets.
"Nice to meet you as well," I reply.
"Alright, if we don't want to be late, we better move it."
We head over to the school, it is a short, five-minute walk through the forest. The school is huge, and I have no clue how I am going to find my way around. Maybe they will give me a map. Alana and Ryla drop me off at the principal's office and head off to class so they won't be late. I knock on the door.
"Come in!" a man says from the other side of the door.
I open the door and walk over to the desk, "Hello, I just started today and need my schedule."
"Name?"
"Cha-Kate Smith," I stutter.
"I see, here you go," he hands me a piece of paper.
"Thank you," I say and walk out of the office.
My first class is history, great my least favorite subject. I seem to be looking for classroom 256 forever when I finally find it, arriving 10 minutes late to class. As I walk into the class and up to the teacher, I can feel everyone's eyes on me. Great.
"Hello dear," the teacher greets with a kind voice, "how about you introduce yourself."
"Um... I'm Kate." I timidly introduce myself.
"Well Kate, I am Ms. Trinity. You can go find an empty seat."
I look around and lucky for me there is a desk with no one sitting there. I sit down, open my history book Daniel left in my bag, and began to read. As I read, I realize that this class isn't like the other history classes, this was about the supernatural. The teacher began to speak.
"Today's lesson will be on prophecies. Right now, the most popular prophecy is the one about a goddess that will choose her destiny to save our world from the darkness or help the darkness rule over. The prophecy states;
One day there will be a child born of two greats. This child will be either our savior or doom and will face many challenges. The decisions of these challenges can be greatly influenced by ones around them and the child must not fall victim to trusting others, only themselves.
After this, she began to speak of other prophecies. At the end of class, she handed out a project to be done on any prophecy of our choosing and it will be due at the end of the week. It is supposed to be done in partners; however, I spoke to Ms. Trinity and she said I can do it alone. My next class is math, it went by pretty quickly. I already knew what they were teaching and so I finished the work before the lesson was over and started to read the next chapter. The girl who I am sitting beside never looked away from her phone the whole class.
It is now lunch. I go to buy a muffin from the cafeteria, and they have my favorite; blueberry. Then I find a seat alone at a table and eat my muffin while I read the history textbook. I am thinking of doing my project on the prophecy about me, but reconsider it because it might make people suspicious. I decide to go for the second most interesting prophecy that took place one hundred and twenty years ago.
A boy who will go through hell and escape after 5 years. He will possess amazing powers; however, he must not let them consume him. Many believe he is Aluca right-hand man now, but no one, except the gods, knows for sure what happened to this boy.
I'm not sure why this particular prophecy interests me, but it does. It has so much mystery to it and I am determined to find out more. It is almost time for my next class, which is where I work on my powers, well some of them. I head to the change rooms before I head out the field. Daniel is a lifesaver; I didn't realize I had to wear workout clothes. I put on a light blue, cropped tank top and a pair is black leggings. I walk out to the field and see the teacher, but no one else. I guess I'm early. I walk up to the teacher.
"Hello, I'm Kate."
"Why hello Kate, I am Mr. Rodrigo, but everyone calls me Jack."
"Nice to meet you, am I early?"
"No actually, you are on time, everyone else always arrives late."
"Oh."
I just stand there in awkward silence as I see more people walking over. I am excited to see what abilities my classmates have.
"Okay everyone," Jack says, "this is our new student, Kate. I want everyone to introduce themselves and your ability."
There were only about five people in the class including me, it's nice having such few people. Around the circle, people introduce themselves and their abilities.
"I'm Jason and I am a werewolf."
"I am Britany and I can control the wind."
I can tell she is in trouble.
"I am Brett and I have telekinesis."
"I am Pelan and I am a fairy."
"Now introduce yourself, Kate," Jack asks.
"I am Kate, I have telekinesis, teleportation, and pyrokinesis."
Everyone's faces look shocked. I am confused, "What?"
"Sorry Kate, it is just that we don't have many Di's let alone Tri's here. It is almost unheard of to have more than one power." Jack explains.
Way to keep me on the down-low, Daniel, thanks a lot. I have found out that it is rare to have elemental control so the fact that I control fire is a big deal. That is also the reason why Britany is very popular. I am partnered with Brett to work on telekinesis together. He is a pretty cool guy. He is having trouble controlling his power, so I help him as it is the one I am best at.
"So, Brett, close your eyes and focus on the leaf in your hand, envision it floating off your hand, and feel the electricity of your power flowing through your body into your hand. When you are ready slowly open your eyes keeping your concentration on the leaf."
As he opens his eyes, he looks surprised and proud. The leaf is floating above his hand.
"Now focus on the leaf slowly floating back down onto your hand."
He does, and it is floating back onto his hand. Brett drops the leaf and cheers.
"I did it! Thank you so much, Kate!"
I chuckle, "It was no problem."
Jack walks up to us, "Great job Brett! Finally, a breakthrough in your powers. Kate, can I talk to you for a moment?"
"Of course, one second."
I walk up to Brett, "Keep practicing, when you feel you are ready try a stick, then a rock. Slowly increase the weight you are lifting."
"Okay, thank you."
I give him a smile and turn to talk away from the group with Jack.
"What is your secret?"
This question strikes some fear in me, "What do you mean?"
"I have been trying to help Brett for two months now ever since he started here, and he couldn't lift a thing unless he was extremely sad, and then random things would be knocked over. So how did you do it?"
"Well, I just told him the way I taught myself how to control it, start small and work your way up. I described the way I felt the first time I used my power and hoped he would feel it like I did."
"Well, thank you for that. I was getting worried he may never learn to improve."
"Of course."
We walked back over, and the girl Britany came up to me.
"Well, look at you, can you use your power to lift anything more than just a leaf?" she laughs, "Pathetic."
"Trust me, I can lift a lot more than just a leaf."
"Oh really," she turns to Jack, "I want to do a duel against Kate."
"Do you accept this duel, Kate?"
"How can I refuse."
