Hand in hand, they marched back to Jen's office to gather her things. "Hey, you okay?" Sammy looked over at her with a concerned eye. To her surprise, she was smiling widely. "Yes. Yes, I think I am, actually. It might just be the shock of it, but I feel free for the first time in a long while." Together, they packed her personal items, the few that were there, into boxes in companionable silence. As they were transporting the boxes to and from Sammy's apartment, they stopped for a moment in the middle of the complex. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yes, of course, Sammy. I'm excited to see what comes next. For the first time in five years, I'm not tied down by that damn job. I had no idea how much it restricted me. I feel so free." To prove her point, she leaned up and kissed Sammy full on the lips, even as they heard the footsteps of others moving around the room. Her kisses were warm and sweet, filled with excitement and purpose. When they broke apart, they shared a chuckle as they held hands and walked out of the complex for the very last time.
When they were outside, the setting sun hit them, a warm glow against their backs as they ventured forth into the outside world. "You know we could have a little fun here. If you'd like."
A chuckle rose from Jen's throat. "What kinda fun were ya thinking?"
"How about a glamoured ride?" Sammy asked, her eyes glinting. In response, Jen nodded emphatically as the vampire took a small vial from her pocket and took a small sip of the strange purple mixture. "Some of the glamours are selective so you can pick and choose who can see you, but this is just a blanket one. So no one can see us apart from each other. There's no side affects and its harmless, don't worry." Eagerly, the human took the small vial, taking a small sip. "How long does it take to work?"
"Only about five seconds." Her lips curled into a smile as she turned her back to Jen. "Piggyback ride?" Enthusiastically, Jen leaped onto her back. "Not too heavy, am I?" She asked, suddenly worried.
"Hun, I'm a vampire. Super strength, remember?" She chuckled, tickled by her naivety and sweet innocence of the spirit world. "Now lets go for a ride. Hold on tight." She said as she started jogging at a normal pace. Faster. To a human sprint. Faster. Faster. Faster. And soon they were speeding along the pavement. As Sammy carefully picked her way through the city streets, buildings flashed passed in a grey and terracotta blur. Jen's eyes widened and her jaw dropped. "Whoa..." She could barely talk from the amazement of the sight before her.
Soon, the grey buildings blended into olive green foliage. Trees passed by like cars on a racetrack. Eventually, they slowed down and stopped in the middle of an empty meadow. The green grass tickled Jen's ankles as Sammy set her down. "Whoa... Good! Good... That was uh..."
"Good?" She giggled, turning around to make sure she was set down alright without falling.
"It was indescribable. I can't believe you do that so often. I mean it was... wow..." She beamed, wrapping her arms around her girlfriend. The vampire chuckled, leaning down with Jen to lay on the soft grass. "I'm just glad I got to share it with you. It gives me an escape from the world. Out there, when I'm running, its just me and the path ahead. But lately, I haven't needed that. Not with you." She murmured, running a finger along her jaw. Jen captured her finger with her own hand. "Sammy... I need to tell you something... But first I want you to do something for me." She perked up for a moment, waiting for instruction. "What is it?"
"Take out your contacts... I want to see you how you truly are." She smiled, letting her hand go as she reached up to remove her contact lenses.
Sammy tucked the small pieces of plastic in her jacket pocket, revealing two glowing, pulsing crimson orbs. When her eyes caught Jen's, she dropped her gaze, looking sullenly at the ground. The human's finger crept under her chin, raising her face to hers. "Hey, don't be ashamed of them. They're part of who you are. You should never be ashamed of who you are. They're beautiful, and so are you." She kissed her softly, bringing a small smile to Sammy's face.
"What was it you wanted to tell me?" She asked, now smiling.
"Sammy... before I met you, the most important thing in my life was my work. I worked day-in, day-out, just focussing on making the band as good as it could be... But then I met you... I'm a practical woman, I don't believe in love at first sight, but when I met you, there was a spark between us, it was electric... I felt alive for the first time in a long while. Lately, you've been all I can think about... There's a connection between us, and I don't wanna lose it. Its beautiful and its worth protecting. I've felt it for a while now and I don't wanna hide it any more. I love you, Sammy Sangre and I can't and won't hide it from anyone anymore." Sammy's eyes lit up, gleaming with tears in the light of the setting sun. "Jen, I love you, too. More than you know." She leaned over, kissing her girlfriend enthusiastically. Jen rested her head on Sammy's shoulder, sighing deeply.
Together, the human and the vampire lay together, staring up at the darkening sky, thinking about their next adventure together...
