Chapter 5 - UNRAVELING SHADOWS

The gentle clinking of utensils against porcelain filled the air as Serena and Kelly sat down for dinner. Kelly skillfully extracted a blood bag from the container, deft fingers finding purchase on the synthetic material. A quiet squeeze and a deep maroon liquid oozed into the glasses before them.

As they each took a sip, the rich flavor of the blood washed over their senses, sating a hunger that ran far deeper than the physical. A sigh of contentment escaped Serena's lips, echoed by Kelly beside her. It was a moment of silent communion, a reminder of their shared existence on the precipice between worlds.

Amid this tranquil interlude, Serena's voice cut through the quiet. "You won't believe what I heard at the station today."

Kelly's eyes rolled dramatically, her tone laced with mock exasperation. "Please tell me you're not about to start talking about that captive again."

Serena chuckled softly, the corners of her lips lifting in amusement. "Okay, fine. I won't mention her." Yet beneath the laughter, a current of curiosity surged within her.

Minutes ticked by, the silence a canvas for their thoughts. And then, Serena broached a different topic, her voice carrying a note of confusion. "You know, Draco asked me something weird today."

Kelly's brows arched, her attention fully captured. "Weird how?"

A perplexed frown etched Serena's features, her gaze distant as she recounted the interaction. "He asked me if I was a pureblood vampire."

Kelly's laughter bubbled forth, her amusement vibrant. "What? Why would he think that?"

Serena's shoulders shrugged, a bemused smile quirking her lips. "I have no idea. I mean, I'm a transitioned vampire. I wasn't even born one."

The sisters exchanged a bemused glance, a shared moment of puzzlement and lightheartedness. Yet as swiftly as the topic emerged, it faded, leaving room for a more mundane concern.

Serena's voice adopted a casual tone, as if in passing. "By the way, did you let the captive use the bathroom?"

Kelly's reaction was anything but casual. The sudden urgency in her sister's question froze her in her tracks. Panic spiked in her eyes, her body moving before her thoughts caught up. "Oh my goddess, I totally forgot! She must be desperate!"

With a sudden surge of energy, Kelly bolted from her seat, her voice rising as she rushed toward the basement. "Hey, you better not have peed yourself down there!"

Draco thought about his conversation with Serena. Serena was sure she wasn't a pureblood. there ought to be some sort of mistake, maybe she didn't know it. he was sure of it, Serena was his mate and in two months when he turns eighteen, he would be sure.

Draco's footsteps led him to the imposing entrance of his ancestral home, yet a quiet hesitation held him at bay. Opting for a different direction, he turned toward the home of his cousin and closest confidant, Leroy. A half-hour journey deposited him at a domicile less opulent but no less inviting—a place where simplicity was its kind of luxury.

A brief call to Leroy, still enshrouded in sleep, garnered a groggy response. The gate yawned open to admit Draco, and within its bounds, he encountered the familiar figures of his aunt, Leroy's mother, and her human partner.

Draco's gaze rested on his aunt, a woman who had chosen love over convention, binding her life to that of a human.

Navigating the passageways to Leroy's room, Draco found him cocooned in slumber.

Turning his attention to Leroy, Draco recognized the unique demeanor that veiled struggles unknown to most. Leroy's cheerful façade was more than a mask—it was to not let the world perceive his pain. For Leroy, born without the ability to morph into his wolf form, the dichotomy of his existence had shaped him into a beacon of optimism in the face of adversity.

"Wake up," Draco urged.

Leroy's voice, tinged with morning's lethargy, reached Draco's ears. "Go away, Draco."

Amusement laced Draco's words. "Time to rise and shine."

Leroy's eyes blinked open, a slow grin unfurling. "Well, well. Look who's here. What brings you to my humble abode?"

Draco's explanation was straightforward. "Needed a break from the usual scenery."

The familiarity of Leroy's room embraced Draco, a comfort that prompted him to unburden his thoughts. "I've been feeling stressed lately," he confessed.

Leroy, always candid, quipped, "How's that my business?"

A playful smirk curved Draco's lips. With a playful shove, he toppled Leroy off the bed before promptly leaping onto it himself. "Now it's your business," he asserted.

Leroy, now on the floor, rose with a mixture of annoyance and amusement. "This isn't funny," he grumbled, attempting to pull Draco down, but finding himself overmatched.

Sitting on the couch, Leroy muttered his grievances as Draco took the center of the bed. The room seemed to buzz with their easy camaraderie.

Draco's tone turned serious as he continued, "I've been thinking about my mate."

Leroy, still grappling with the aftermath of being displaced, rolled his eyes in exasperation. "You know, talking to you is a surefire way to lose brain cells."

Draco pressed on, undeterred. "I think she might be a vampire."

A groan of disbelief escaped Leroy's lips, exuding an aura of mock suffering. "Great, now I can feel the IQ points dripping away."

But Draco persisted, "I've even been having dreams about her."

Another groan punctuated Leroy's response. "Please, spare me."

With an air of sincerity, Draco sought advice. "What should I do?"

Leroy's retort was laced with sarcasm. "Oh, I don't know. Leave the pack, and start a new life in the wilderness with your vampire mate. It's a brilliant plan."

Draco's contemplative expression gave way to a glimmer of seriousness, considering the radical idea. Leroy, seeing the shift, hastened to clarify. "Hey, don't even think about it. I was joking."

A wry smile tugged at Draco's lips. "Fine, you're right. I guess I'll let you sleep then."

As the conversation tapered off, Leroy settled onto the couch, his sleep now the priority. Draco watched him for a moment before stretching out on the bed, thoughts of his enigmatic mate occupying his mind.

In the dimness of the basement, Kelly stood sentinel, her keen senses capturing every nuance. As the captive's movements resonated within the bathroom, Kelly's heightened hearing painted a vivid picture. Unseen by Kelly, the captive seized an opportunity, her actions calculated. Searching, she spotted the open window—a glimpse of freedom. With quiet determination, she turned the tap, its sound masking her intentions. Climbing atop the toilet seat, she extended her fingers toward the window, a distant hope within her grasp. Yet, before her fingertips brushed the pane, a relentless pull on her hair halted her momentum.

Kelly's voice, a mix of derision and impatience, cut through the air. "Nice try. You thought that plan was foolproof? Newsflash: I heard every single move."

As the captive was hauled back into the basement's depths, her desperation found voice in urgent cries for help. Kelly's eyes rolled heavenward in response, her patience stretched thin. "Do you ever give it a rest?"

Guiding the captive with unyielding resolve, Kelly silenced her captive's pleas with the harsh truth. "We soundproofed the house long ago. Your cries won't do you any good."

The captive's protests dissolved into an uneasy silence, quelled by the stark reality of their surroundings. Yet, even as the captive's voice was stifled, Kelly's grievances found their way to the surface. Kelly's words carried a biting edge, a reflection of her irritation. "I cooked for you, and I even played the role of your escort to the bathroom. But I guess that doesn't matter, does it?"

Descending to the basement's depths, they reached the captive's temporary confines. With a firm shove, Kelly propelled her captive into the room. The captive's voice carried a hint of desperation, fueled by the intensity of her situation. "You could end all this if you just released me."

Kelly's retort, though lacking sympathy, was tinged with weary sarcasm. "Keep dreaming."As Kelly secured the captive with ropes and a gag, she could feel the captive's lingering gaze.

Emerging from the basement, Kelly found Serena waiting, her inquiry evident in her expression. "What's the situation?"

Kelly's response was tinged with a note of exasperation. "Our dear guest was expressing her gratitude in her unique way."
