Chapter 26 - "I Guess I Can Try..."

"There are actually just two conditions. One, You don't control my life, and two, If you expect me to follow all of your rules, then you have to also follow them too," Bella said with a shrug after writing the rules beneath his own.

Dan glowered at her, "It is my house," Dan reminded her. Were employees usually this bold these days?

"Exactly why keeping your own rules should be easier for you, right? I can be the best personal assistant you will ever have, but if you break any one of your own rules, then I will have no choice but to break it too. So?" Bella said with a grin, even though she knew she had absolutely no intention of keeping any one of the rules.

"You can't..."

"Okay then, I guess I will just have to decline your job offer," Bella bluffed as she stood up and gathered her documents.

"I haven't even offered you the job yet, so there is nothing for you to decline," Dan reminded her with a scowl. What was wrong with him anyway?

"It's your loss then. You just lost your opportunity to work with the most organized personal assistant you will ever have," Bella said with a shrug as she walked towards the door, silently praying that he wouldn't let her walk through the door.

Dan decided to call her bluff and let her leave. "Okay then, have a nice day, Mr. Stuart," Dan said dismissively and returned his attention to the window.

Bella remained standing by the door as she shot darts at his back with her eyes. Why couldn't the stupid prick stop her from leaving? There was no way she was going to return home to her mother without getting this job. She guessed she just had to swallow her pride.

Dan spied her from the corner of his eyes and took out his phone, pretending to dial Richie's number, "Hey, bro! You should resume your search for a..."

She cleared her throat, making Dan turn around to look at her. "What? You are still here?" Dan asked, giving her a blank stare before returning his attention to the window.

"Yeah, I don't think I can work with the young man you..."

Bella swallowed past the hard lump of pride in her throat, "I guess I can try to adjust," She said with a wince.

All she wanted was to get the job, at least. She could quit a month or a week later, but getting the job was more important to her at the moment.

"Let me call you back, Rich," Dan said and pretended to disconnect the call.

"You were saying?" He asked, cocking his head to the side. He could tell the young man before him was a very proud person, and he did not doubt that he was going to get a kick out of pushing him around.

Bella really felt like pounding his head against the wall, but she also really needed the job. "I said I can try to adjust to your rules," Bella said without meeting his gaze.

"I'm sure you can," Dan said without sparing her a glance.

"So? Do I have the job?" Bella asked hopefully.

"Yes. You can resume at once. Start by asking my secretary to give you my schedule for the week," Dan said before turning to look at her.

"You mean I am to resume work right now?" She asked, trying to be sure she had heard him correctly.

"Yes. Or do you have a problem with that?" Dan asked as he strolled over to his seat.

"No, I don't, but don't we have to discuss my salary and sign some agreement paper?" Bella asked with uncertainty.

"You should learn how to use honorifics. I am your employer," He reminded Bella, who rolled her eyes inwardly. She couldn't wait to tell her family that she had scored the job.

"Okay," Bella said with a nod.

"Sir," She added with a stiff smile when he raised a brow.

"Good. You will have to move in with me immediately. Get my schedule from my secretary, and then I'll have my driver take you home to pick up your belongings. After you're settled in, then maybe we can talk," Dan ordered.

Bella considered him briefly and decided just to pretend he was someone else. That was the only way she would be able to take instructions from an arrogant and self-centered prick like him.
