Chapter 35 - Chapter 8: The Debate

On the day of candidacy filing, Senator Lean Marco strode into the electoral commission's office with confidence. Beside him were his wife and daughter, exuding a sense of assurance that he could challenge and overcome the incumbent, who had ascended to power amid political turbulence. Reporters swarmed around them, eager to hear his thoughts on the upcoming election. When asked about his confidence in facing President Marino, Marco calmly asserted, "I believe I can defeat Mr. Marino and his allies in this election."

-----

After the attempted coup damaged the presidential palace, Karl decided to relocate his operations to the Marino mansion and set up his office in the Innovare Tower. Upon his return, carrying a hefty stack of documents, he settled into his new workspace. Charlie, Gustav, and Jamie were already in the room, watching an interview featuring Senator Lean Marco.

"He's quite confident he'll defeat you, Oppa," Jamie remarked to Karl.

"He won't stand a chance once his dirty laundry starts airing," Karl replied, diving into the documents spread across his desk.

Charlie leaned in, examining the paperwork. "This is about the overpriced road project, these are the suspicious expenses, and here are his assets and liabilities."

Kenneth joined them, clearly surprised by the revelations in Karl's findings. "These documents outline all of Lean Marco's projects. The funds allocated for market roads were instead spent on expensive jewelry and bags, amounting to seventy million."

"Bingo! Do you think people would still vote for him if they knew this?" Karl questioned.

"Oppa, it's not like you haven't partnered with Innovare for government projects," Jamie interjected. Karl responded, "At least our methods are legal."

Karl glanced at the television screen, a sardonic grin spreading across his face as he watched the fiery senator. "Look at him, thinking he can defeat me because of his supposed clean track record and concern for the poor. I know he, Fernando, and Albert Fontierra were behind the attack on the presidential palace. We'll wait until I confirm it."

"Speaking of which, Muro and Charee are participating in a leadership forum soon. I heard Lean's daughter will be there too," Jamie informed Karl.

"I just hope they don't mess it up," Karl murmured, looking up at the ceiling, silently praying for his son's success.

-----

At the National University Political Forum, Rafael stood by Muro and Charee, representing their father, President Karl Marino. Bianca had opted out to maintain her credibility, while Rina chose not to involve herself in family politics. Muro was visibly nervous, his hands clammy and sweat forming on his brow as he surveyed the expectant press and students eagerly awaiting his speech.

"You look really nervous," Charee remarked, gently dabbing Muro's forehead with a tissue.

"I'm supposed to speak on behalf of Dad, but I don't even know his plans," Muro admitted anxiously. "Why couldn't Cardinal, Uncle Roger, Aunt Riria, or Aunt Akko handle this instead?"

Rafael regarded his brother with empathy and offered a reassuring smile. "Muro, there are many students and people here who want to hear directly from Dad's own flesh and blood. Anything you say will carry weight because it's coming from you. Just be yourself."

Taking a deep breath, Muro nervously tapped his fingers on his leg. "But what if I mess up? What if I say something like 'Dad can walk on water'?"

"Why would Karl Minomoto Marino Jr., with an IQ of 200, say something so absurd in front of the press?" Rafael replied firmly. "You're smarter than that. Trust yourself and speak honestly."

"You've got this, Karl Tsukamoto Marino Jr.," Charee encouraged warmly, boosting Muro's confidence as he stepped onto the stage. To his surprise, one of the panelists across from him was Sofia Marco, the girl he once gave a palace tour to. Representing her father, Senator Marco, Sofia playfully winked at Muro, causing him to blush in admiration.

Muro pondered quietly, "I thought she was upset because I already have a girlfriend." Backstage, Charee couldn't contain her jealousy and confronted Muro with a whisper.

"Why are you flirting with her?" Charee accused, her voice barely above a whisper, as Muro shook his head in denial of any romantic intentions toward Sofia.

The moderators swiftly altered the format, transforming it into a direct debate between Charee, Muro, and Sofia Marco. Both students and the media eagerly anticipated this unprecedented event, where the heirs of both the challenger and the incumbent squared off. Sofia began with a poised and articulate statement, focusing on her father's achievements.

"My father, Senator Lean, has achieved significant milestones such as the construction of farm-to-market roads and the promotion of free education for underprivileged children. He has championed numerous laws that have had a profound impact on Filipino lives. However, the current administration has hindered the implementation of these laws. The President has faced criticism for favoring the wealthy over the poor, despite his previous dedication to the labor force. His background as a former CEO of a powerful corporation and rumors of extramarital affairs suggest a bias toward the affluent. Imagine a Marco presidency—pro-poor policies would take precedence, promising a government that prioritizes the disadvantaged over the wealthy elite."

Muro's throat tightened with nerves as he struggled to formulate a response to Sofia's sharp criticisms of his father. Charee, sensing the urgency, stepped forward to defend the government's stance, despite her initial hesitation.

"Our government is actively working to alleviate poverty and support both the middle class and labor sectors," she asserted, but her defense was abruptly cut short by Sofia's attempt to undermine her.

"But why then do we see ongoing struggles in the labor sector?" Sofia interjected, trying to unsettle Charee.

Muro swiftly collected himself, taking control of the moment with a composed yet powerful presence. He addressed Sofia and the audience with clarity and determination.

"President Marino has been unwavering in his commitment to fairness for the poor. He personally visits remote areas, establishing schools and enhancing infrastructure to uplift those in need. His policies have not only improved livelihoods but have also bolstered our nation's export sector. As for the labor issues, why divert attention to personal matters when discussing government achievements and your father's track record? My father has dedicated his career to advocating for the underprivileged. During his time as a senator, he exposed numerous government scandals and tirelessly defended the people's interests."

Muro's words hung in the air, commanding attention and respect from the audience. His defense painted a picture of his father's dedication and integrity, leaving a lasting impression on all those present.

The moderator intervened swiftly, halting the escalating tension between the two sides, and redirected the focus by posing a pivotal question to Muro.

"Mr. Marino, will your father seek a second term?" the moderator inquired, his tone weighted with significance.

Caught off guard by the directness of the question, Muro hesitated momentarily, unsure of how to navigate such a crucial inquiry. Despite his initial hesitation, his response emerged unexpectedly, almost of its own accord.

"Yes, my father will indeed run for a second term," Muro affirmed, his voice steady despite the whirlwind of thoughts racing through his mind.

-----

At the Presidential Palace, Karl and the others watched in stunned silence as Muro's unexpected declaration unfolded on television. Karl, seated thoughtfully in his office, sipped his tea while absorbing the implications of his son's words.

"Now that he's said you'll run, what are your intentions?" Riko asked, her voice tinged with surprise and concern.

Karl remained composed, his gaze drifting towards his wife. The atmosphere was charged as their political allies began to enter the room with urgency.

"I know what you're all thinking. Am I really considering another run, or do I secretly want Marco to win?" Karl responded calmly, setting down his tea. "Give me a week to gather my thoughts, and I'll provide an answer."

"This is outrageous!" Riko exclaimed, her frustration palpable as she turned and left the office in disbelief. Karl chuckled softly to himself, focusing his attention back on the television screen where Muro continued to address the public with confidence.

-----

A week later, Rafael joined Karl, Jamie, and Charlie at a public gathering for the inauguration of the new green city. Seated behind his father, the Vice President, and his younger brother, he listened intently as Karl addressed the audience.

"Now we have this presidential hopeful who claims he'll prioritize the environment and end corruption but hesitates to confront China," Karl began, his voice carrying across the crowd. "He's so confident he's thrown mud at me, at Charlie, and my wife, even trying to provoke Emi Takahashi, the mother of one of my children."

"Now, the question on everyone's mind, including the media, is whether I will run for a second term or pass the baton to Charlie," Karl continued, setting the stage for his pivotal announcement.

"Riko and I decided long ago—before I took on the role of acting president—that I would retire from politics. She planned to return to acting, her first love. But circumstances change, and Riko, despite not being Filipino, has shown immense care for our women and children. She realized there are greater responsibilities than acting. Likewise, I've come to see there's more to be done for our country: securing our territory, creating jobs, preserving the environment, ensuring safety for Filipinos and foreigners, and delivering top-notch education to our youth," Karl declared, his words resonating with conviction.

"After consulting with my wife and close friends," Karl announced emphatically, "I have decided to seek a full term as President of the Philippines."

The audience erupted in applause at Karl's declaration, amplified further when Charlie joined him on stage, raising their hands in unity—a clear signal of their readiness to campaign for another term.

----

The following morning, Karl and Charlie, flanked by their allies, arrived to formally submit their candidacy as President and Vice President, respectively. In contrast to the vibrant aura surrounding Lean Marco upon his arrival, Karl carried a demeanor that was both enigmatic and commanding. Media crowded around them, seeking a response to Senator Marco's accusations against the president.

Karl didn't stay in the electoral hall for long, but Charlie left with a succinct remark: "Let that senator mind his words."

-----

That night, Karl stood on the veranda, cradling a glass of whiskey in his hand. Muro quietly entered and stood behind him.

"Is something troubling you, Dad?" Muro asked softly.

Karl turned to his son, placing a reassuring hand on his cheek. "It's not your fault, Muro. I needed this situation to decide whether to run again."

"So, you're not angry with me?" Muro inquired.

Karl smiled warmly. "Maybe a little, but listen carefully. Don't let yourself be deceived by people. Keep your guard up, just like your sister and me. Rafael let his guard down once, and we almost paid dearly for it."

With that, Karl left the veranda, leaving Muro to ponder his father's words in the quiet of the night.

-------

At the Command Center, Karl and his campaign team convened in his office, preparing for what they intended to be the country's biggest expose.

"All his projects are a sham—overpriced and substandard," the auditor informed them.

"Can you expose that during the debate?" Karl asked.

"I'll gather all the necessary documents, and we'll be ready," the auditor replied, sounding concerned. "But I need assurance for my family's safety."

Antonio entered with several men, causing the auditor to freeze in his seat. Karl tapped his shoulder reassuringly.

"They'll be your security detail, ready to protect you," Antonio assured him.

"I just need to ensure those involved in extramarital affairs are dealt with," Karl added, then left the office with his security detail.

"My husband has returned to the dark side," Riko murmured coldly, staring at their wedding portrait.

------------

In the ensuing weeks, tension mounted as the presidential campaign gained momentum across the country. Karl Marino's children were deeply involved in bolstering their father's bid: Jiena, Rafael, and Kyoko tirelessly campaigned in the northern regions, while Bianca, Jasmine, and Mako canvassed support in the southern provinces. Muro and Charee traversed the western islands, engaging voters, while Marla and Rina teamed up to rally support in the central regions.

On the opposing front, Senator Lean's campaign was characterized by relentless criticism of the current administration. His public appearances exuded confidence and charisma, bolstered by the presence of his captivating wife, who held audiences spellbound.

"Karl Marino shows no concern for the welfare of the poor, the environment, or the security threats posed by terrorists and neighboring nations due to his aggressive weapons development projects. He is an insensitive man," the senator asserted in his impassioned speeches. He further alleged that President Marino's health was deteriorating and insinuated that Karl avoided debates out of cowardice, substantiating his claims with a video montage depicting alleged misconduct by the president.

These accusations resonated widely among the electorate, sowing seeds of doubt about Karl Marino's leadership and moral standing.

-------

The atmosphere at the Presidential Palace was tense as Karl and his team diligently strategized for the upcoming campaign. Stress hung heavy in the air as they awaited Senator Lean's next political move. Karl, visibly fatigued, had dozed off at his desk, while Riko sat on the couch, deep in thought about their next steps. Suddenly, the secretary rushed in with news of a visitor.

"Sir, someone is here to see you," the secretary announced, prompting Karl to give permission for them to enter. To Riko's surprise, it was Emi, Marla's mother, who had arrived on Takako's orders.

"Why are you here?" Riko asked, taken aback by Emi's unexpected presence.

"I've come to assist Karl, as directed by Takako," Emi replied bluntly. "I want to contribute in my own way."

"We can handle this on our own," Riko retorted, dismissing Emi's offer.

Emi pressed on, noting, "I've observed that Senator Lean's wife is actively campaigning, while our efforts seem to be lagging."

Riko hesitated, uncertain how to respond.

Charlie intervened, reminding them, "Filipino workers in Asia are rallying behind Karl Marino, thanks to Emi's efforts. Remember, you're equals—the four of you."

Shifting the conversation, Riko asked about Takako's instructions. Emi disclosed, "She's allocating sixty million dollars to secure Karl's presidency, with an additional seventy million from the penthouse for the campaign."

Curious, Riko inquired about Emi's financial commitment.

"I'm contributing significantly more than your twenty-seven million," Emi boasted confidently.

Sensing the opportunity to unite their efforts, Jamie suggested, "Instead of competing, why not join forces? You've done it before, and together, you and Emi would make a formidable team."

Reluctantly, Riko nodded in agreement, recognizing the potential in Jamie's suggestion.

-----

Riko and Emi embarked on a global tour to shore up support for Karl among workers, marking an unexpected alliance between the president's wife and his primary mistress. As Karl's children continued rallying for his victory amid Senator Lean's aggressive attacks, Karl reluctantly agreed to a debate, ending the senator's leisurely days. Organized by the National University, the pivotal debate between Karl Marino and Sen. Marco saw Muro and Charee arriving as part of Karl's team.

Sofia greeted Muro with a playful wink, recalling their previous encounter. Hours later, Karl, accompanied by Charlie, Gustav, Jamie, Emi, and Riko, arrived at the venue. Shortly after, Sen. Lean and his party entered, their eyes filled with animosity as they crossed paths with Karl's team.

The debate became a clash not just of ideologies but also of matriarchal influence, with both wives standing by their husbands. In the reception hall, Riko and Sophie met for the first time, exuding elegance amid curious gazes. Sophie approached them with a greeting.

"It's an honor to finally meet the First Lady and the legendary Emi Takahashi. I've heard so many good things about both of you," Sophie remarked.

"The feeling is mutual. Nice to meet you too," Riko replied firmly, shaking Sophie's hand.

"Likewise," Emi added.

"For a Japanese, you're fluent in English and Filipino," Sophie commented.

"Living here for twenty years has made it easy to adapt," Emi explained, "especially with my husband in politics."

"Not bad for the wife of a gang lord," Sophie interjected.

Riko smiled confidently. "Your rhetoric suits a wife of a sociopath who destroys forests and lives."

Sophie retorted, "It's not worse than killing political enemies."

Riko grinned back. "Watch your words. Despite your powerful family, I hold more influence than you. You might just experience the wrath of a true leader."

With that, Riko led Emi and Sachiko into the elevator, leaving Sophie with a knowing grin.

------

The stage was set, both presidential contenders poised at their respective podiums, eyes locked in a silent battle of wills. Despite the customary handshake, a potent undercurrent of rivalry simmered beneath their composed facades as they aimed for the pinnacle of national power.

When granted the opportunity to address public safety, Sen. Lean wasted no time in launching a verbal assault on Karl's defense strategies.

"Our president cowers at our borders, unable to assert authority even in his own household! Yes, fellow citizens, our leader fears his own wife," the senator declared. "While he dallies in extramarital affairs, he neglects our nation's security!"

Karl rebutted firmly, "We confront challenges in crime prevention, yet our policies are rigorous and effective."

"Your policies include death squads and targeting political opponents," Sen. Lean fired back.

Karl's retort was swift and cutting, "You speak of cowardice while I faced rebels in battle, risking my life. Where were you? Hiding in the shadows, shielded by political rhetoric? And as for my personal life, I'm transparent about my relationships. My wife knows and rightfully voices her concerns."

The moderator intervened, swiftly transitioning to the next topic. As Karl retreated backstage, Charlie and Jamie briefed him on the upcoming discussion points, the atmosphere charged with anticipation and strategic resolve.

"Lem, the next topic is smuggling. Find a way to expose his deceptive plans," Charlie instructed the president, while Riko added pointedly, "It's hypocritical to deny involvement in smuggling. Plug that hole."

"And don't forget the freshwater supplies and diamonds in Madagascar," Jamie reminded, prompting Karl to chuckle.

"I've got this," Karl assured his team before returning to the podium to confront his primary rival in the election.

"Mr. President, Sen. Marco, our next topic is smuggling—an issue costing the government billions annually. Care to respond, Mr. President?" the moderator queried.

"Well, that figure is misleading. We've reduced losses to thirty million through strict enforcement and dismantling smuggling networks, including drug trafficking," Karl responded before Sen. Marco interrupted.

"You're implicated in these syndicates, even orchestrating murders to maintain control," Sen. Marco accused.

"Watch your words, Senator. I know about your illegal quarrying and logging operations," Karl shot back.

"We're discussing smuggling here," Sen. Lean retorted, his throat dry with tension.

"Let's keep this civil," the moderator intervened. "Now, let's move on to your closing statements, Senator."

"Thank you, moderator. We all know this country is on the path to progress. To continue this journey, you need a leader with strong credentials, who has studied abroad to serve our people. That leader is me, not a businessman who indulges in womanizing, illicit wealth accumulation, smuggling freshwater, and eliminating political rivals. Vote for me," the senator proclaimed confidently.

Karl stared at him, clearly unimpressed by the senator's accusations and bluster.

"Well, I admit to my flaws—I've had affairs and fathered children outside my marriage. But I stepped into office during a crisis, and over the past three years, we've faced challenges head-on. We've repaired diplomatic ties, supported our farmers, protected our environment from degradation caused by his businesses, and defended our nation against criminals and terrorists. My commitment is to serve every Filipino, not just with words but with actions. In the next six years, I promise a stronger nation. Give me a second chance, and together, we will make this country great again," Karl stated firmly, concluding his speech.

"Wow, I didn't expect him to be so straightforward," Gustav whispered, observing the President leave the podium, bringing an end to the grueling debate and campaign.
