Chapter 17 - A Moment To Remember

Alessandro reached Massimo's mansion on the other side of Italy. He gently lifted her from the seat and began carrying her towards the room. He then gently placed her on the bed and covered her with the bedspread. He then dimmed the lights and went out.

Alessandro made himself comfortable in the hall drinking champagne and reading the newspaper. All was going well until he heard a blood curling scream. He ran towards Melina's room only to find a masked man standing near Melina's bed, trying to grab her.

Alessandro acted out quickly. He immediately withdrew his gun and shot, aiming at the masked man's leg. He didn't want to kill the guy since he could be a source of crucial information. But the masked man was too smart to be shot. He quickly jumped through the window and escaped.

'That bastard', Alessandro murmured to himself and made his way to Melina. She was terrified. 'Poor soul. She must never have had this experience before. This is too much to take in, in one day', he thought and reached to comfort her. It only made her more terrified. Sighing, he just locked the door and left her alone.

As soon as things got clear, Massimo returned to the mansion to find Alessandro sitting in the hall. Alessandro updated Massimo on the occurred incident and Massimo got furious.

' How the hell could he have got past the security Alessandro?', Massimo asked Alessandro. ' You need to calm down Massimo', Alessandro replied calmly. 'I can't calm down in matters where Melina is concerned! No one can take her away from me! She is everything to me, Alessandro!', he roared.

Alessandro just smiled, ' I know mate. I know that she's everything to you but you can't protect her if you get furious. You need to be calm to find out the miles in our house', he said. Massimo smiled this time. 'You just know what to say to me at the right time, don't you?', he asked. Alessandro replied, ' Well I think your girl needs you', and went towards the door.

Massimo went towards the room and opened the door to find Melina hugging her knees and weeping. He sighed and went towards her and sat next to her.

'Where's Dario?', she asked still hugging her knees. 'Melina, I promise I would bring him back', he replied. 'What do you mean to bring him back? Where is he, Massimo? Is he dead? Oh my God', Melina gasped and started sobbing. Massimo went closer and wrapped her in his arms and replied,' No he isn't dead Melina, and I swear on my life I would bring him back. Trust me'.

'Trust you? Do you even hear yourself? You are the sole reason my brother is in danger. If you had not brought him to your prison in the first place! Oh God, I just got him back after years of separation. And now? He's gone, Massimo! And you are the sole reason!', she burst into tears and pushed him away.

For a moment Massimo was speechless, hearing her words and watching her eyes portraying pure contempt and then he regained himself. He could hold himself back no more.

'Stop crying dammit! Do you even know how much it hurts to see you cry and how much more it hurts to know that I'm the reason behind it?? Stop crying or I swear I'll do something I regret', he roared.

Melina was shocked at his immediate outburst and just stared at him bleakly. 'Please Melina, I know I messed up real bad but please let me correct this', he looked into Melina's eyes and replied sincerely. Melina just turned away and closed her eyes. She was not willing to face him.

Suddenly she felt something warm which fell on her arm. She suddenly turned and immediately Massimo turned the other way.

'Are you crying Massimo?', Melina asked gently.

There was no reply.

Melina gently placed her tiny hand over his chin and turned his face towards her only to find his deep, dark eyes glistening with tears for the first time. Being the kind and innocent soul that she is, she couldn't help but comfort him.

'Massimo. Look at me', Melina whispered gently holding his face. He looked up at her and just stared for a moment. He wondered how could a woman be this kind. 'It's okay. I know you'll make things right. Don't cry', she said and ran her fingers through his hair.

She knew he did not deserve her kindness but watching him cry, she just couldn't help it.

That was who she was.

Kindness defined her.

She knew her kindness would be the death of her. Massimo was shocked at what was happening. This was the first time she had looked at him as a person and not as a monster. He yearned for her touch for years and when she did so finally, he could only cherish the moment at the present.

He stared at her, for what felt like ages. 'I don't deserve you Melina', he thought to himself. A ruthless monster like him did not deserve a pure soul like her but still, he couldn't help but yearn for her every moment. He wanted her so bad.

She wiped his tears, then withdrew her hand and turned to the other side. Massimo understood that she needed time to herself and so walked away from her though all he wanted was, to never leave her side.

If only he knew what awaited in the future.
