Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: The Reveal

Damien's POV ♣️

Agent Ming excused himself leaving the Minister and I to talk.

" I'm sure you're aware of Kimia's father." He said and I nodded. Kimia was in prison because she murdered her father.

" Well, he used to work for us. He was a brilliant scientist and a computer genius. Most of the gadgets we used today were designed by him. He was the most skilled hacker we had and he taught Kimia a few things before he-, passed. He was not only an agent, he was my best friend." The Minister said sadly.

" Do you think Kim actually-" I started but he cut me off.

" Of course not. Kimia adored her father. They were as thick as thieves. She was a sweet but timid little girl." He said. I looked over at where Kimia was talking with Agent Ming smirking and back at the Minister and raised an eyebrow. He chuckled but continued.

" Prison changes people. Kimia was never like this. She was a quiet girl who loved her father dearly." He said then paused.

"There was always something fishy about her case."

" Then why didn't you do anything about it?"

" Because I feared for her life. Some obviously wanted her out of the picture."

" So they framed her for the murder of her father."

" Exactly. And since we don't know who wants her gone, I have to investigate myself but I've been so busy. But at least she's safe there."

" But she can't spend her life there, she's innocent."

" Why do you think I let you make the deal with Kimia?, Agent Myers I let you make that deal because I knew you'd also be able to get Kimia out. I'm counting on you to get my god-daughter out of jail." He said putting his hand on my shoulder. I looked over at Kim as she rolled eyes at what Agent Ming was saying. She caught my eyes and threw me an impish smile and I smiled back.

Today was the last day of training and we leave for Cuba tomorrow. It was almost midnight and I was still awake. So I decided to go for a run. I ran into the woods at the back of the apartment and was surprised to see Mia sitting on a boulder with running clothes on.

" Hey."

"Hey."

" Couldn't sleep?" I asked and she nodded.

" Me either. Cool pendant." I said pointing at the rectangular pendant she always wore either on a necklace or attached to a bracelet as a charm.

" Thanks, it's actually a locket." She said and she unlocked it. Inside the locket was a picture of her Dad on the left, her Mum on the right and a picture of the entire family in the middle.

" I don't remember much about her." She said.

" But I remember that she always wore the pendant. When she died, my-"

" Your Dad gave it to you."

" Yeah."

" Tell me abo-"

" Look Damien, I know you've read my file so you don't have to pretend that you actually care."

" Sometimes the files are wrong. And I know there's more to you than what is written in your file." I said and she chuckled.

" Let me guess you wanna know if I really killed my father, is that it?"

" Mia, I-"

" Well I didn't kill him. I loved my father more than anything in the world. He was always there for me no matter how busy he was. I adored him. But I knew there was something missing. When he met Melissa, he was happy. He had finally let himself fall in love again and I was happy. Yeah, I was a pretty stupid kid." She said with a sad smile on her face.

" I met Nathan in my first year of college in NYU. He made me laugh and he was really smart and he seemed to adore me. So it was only reasonable for me to say yes when he asked me out. He always told me how much he loved me and I believed him. I was so stupid."

She took a deep breath and then continued.

" Nathan and I were supposed to go out on date that day but he cancelled. So I went home. I was so shocked to see my Dad on the floor in the living room lying in the pool of his blood. I ran to him and ripped the knife out. It was really stupid, I know. Like I said I was a stupid kid. Everything else was a blur. And I found myself in jail.

You know, I always wondered why they thought I killed my Dad cause it was obvious that I loved him so much. Well, I found out that Melissa and Nathan had testified against me saying I was mentally and emotionally unstable." She said and I squeezed her hand.

" I never knew that Henry was a minister." She said and I raised an eyebrow.

" Hey don't look at me like that!, like I said earlier I was-"

" A pretty stupid kid. Yeah I get it." I said chuckling and she rolled her eyes.

" I found out when I got to prison. He had come to to visit me and the warden accidentally let it slip and he didn't deny it when I asked. He's the reason why I was placed in a normal prison and not the mental institution that I was originally sentenced to."

" It wasn't until then that I began questioning my Dad's profession. I began to wonder how he was such good friends with someone so high up there. Even though their friendship was possible, why would he go on business trips with a minister?, Why would the CEO of a tech company go on a business trip with the minister of defence?. Then it hit me, maybe my Dad was also working for the government. So I confronted Henry and he confirmed my suspicions. So there it is Damien, the story of my life."

" Kimia, I promise you that I am going to find who did this to you-"

" You know maybe I deserve to be in prison."

" No you don't. You are innocent."

" I mean it's not such a bad place." She rambled.

" Kimia!, your going there was a mistake, you should've never been there in the first place."

" But I did Damien, and I'm no longer the idiot I used to be." She said and I winced.

" Prison has changed me."

" I promise you that I'll get you out." I said and she laughed bitterly with glossy eyes.

" I'd rather you channel that energy towards helping Rosa. She still has a life, a family and a son to raise while I have, nothing." She said the tears threatening to spill.

It was in that moment I finally saw how broken she truly was. She had been keeping it in for a long time and her walls were beginning to crack. As she looked at me with her chin raised defiantly and her glossy eyes holding an unspoken challenge I realised that she had not healed. Her father's death was an emotional rollercoaster and she'd been trying to move on. I pulled her into my arms and hugged her tightly.

She struggled against me, pushing and punching but I didn't let go. She finally gave up and crumbled in my arms. She let out the first nerve wrecking sob and I squeezed her tighter until she was crying and pouring it all out. She eventually fell asleep and I carried back to the apartment.

As I laid her on the bed I couldn't resist the urge to touch her face.

" I know I should stop lying to you but I can't. I don't know how, but I'm gonna get you out of there. I promise." I said planting a kiss on her forehead.

" I just have to figure out how first. I don't know what you're doing to me Mia. And honestly, I don't want it to end."
