Chapter 7 - New Hire

After breakfast's tense affair, Carina retreated to her room to settle the business of hiring another maid.

She had hoped to gleam more from finally meeting the family, but the only one who spoke to her was Vanessa. Her own father didn't even bother to spare her a second glance after she sat down. She might've felt bitter about it, if she was the Carina of before, but now all she felt was a pity, pity for the Carina had to live her whole life with a father like this.

With those thoughts in mind, Carina's face unintentionally slipped into a displeased expression, which only made the three maids in the room even more nervous.

"Miss," Anne interrupted, albeit very quietly, "the maids are here."

Carina snapped her head up, as if having just realised she wasn't actually alone in her room.

"Right. Anne, you can go for now."

The moment Anne left the room, Carina paced in front of the three maids, scrutinising them with a focused gaze.

The first maid was someone who'd been working in the mansion for years. Anne had told her previously that she was well known for her service, and that she was a maid Vanessa brought from her previous house. She was the only maid Vanessa brought with her, so Carina supposed that meant she really just was that good at her job.

Carina wasn't necessarily just looking for a hard worker though, she was looking for loyalty, and she had a hunch that the first maid's loyalty was already pledged to Vanessa.

The second maid was recently hired, someone quite young and fresh faced. She was brought in when one of the other older maids had retired. She was still learning from some of the more experienced maids, and therefore hasn't been handed any chores of her own yet.

Carina knew this one would likely latch onto her fast, but wouldn't be competent enough for Carina to fully trust in her skills.

The third maid was the most interesting of the bunch. Anne had warned her before hand that she was quiet and rarely talked to anybody, but that she did what she was told and still did her job well enough that nobody bothered her about it. What caught Carina's eye however was the state of her body, or more specifically how toned her legs were. Carina suspected that this maid had probably spent quite a bit of time running.

Carina suspected this maid could be very useful to her.
