Chereads / Saving Etro / Chapter 8 - Escape

Chapter 8 - Escape

-Time: 11:00 Location-Meihei city prison-

Amarie is pacing back and Firth in a jail cell. Cold, dark, and alone, Amarie is looking around to see if she can use anything to her advantage. Nothing. It's been almost two hours since the party. The streets have grown quiet, but the bright lights keep the city awake.

Suddenly, Amarie hears the door open. An officer walks in with a tray of food and some water

Officer: This is it for the night(puts the tray down) We'll deal with you in the morning

Although Amarie has every reason to hate this man, she remains calm and smiles.

Amarie: Thank you

Officer: Tch- Whatever

Amarie takes a sip of water and then sits down on a bench in the cell. A sad look spreads across her face as she hears faint footsteps come through the wall and into the cell, she looks down.

Amarie: Haven't you already done enough?

Maisha: How'd you know it was me?

Amarie: The party. You disappeared so quickly after what happened in the garden. It only made sense that you would have some sort of invisibility (looks at her) or in this case, phasing, ability.

Maisha(slight smirk) smart. Look, I came to apologize

Amarie: Save it

I started to think I could trust you, but I was wrong. You're just like everyone else.

Maisha: I didn't know what they would do to you.

My dad...he's the chief of the police here in Meihei. He's been on the hunt for you ever reports came back from Taikal.

I knew they were taking no ranks away, but I didn't know they were purging them.

Amarie: but you reported me and that's the problem. You see me as nothing, a powerless being, not as an actual person

It doesn't matter anymore. I'll be dead in the morning. I just wish I had gotten to say goodbye to Sveinn and Demir...so much for bringing change to the world.

Maisha: Then let's get you out of here

Amarie: (confused panic) so I can say goodbye??

Maisha: (laughs) no, so you can bring change to the world.

Even without powers, people deserve an equal chance in life. People are more than their ability

Just let me help you...and then... you'll never have to see me again

Amarie: alright...so,what's the plan

Maisha: (snarky)well it can't be that hard

Amarie: wow ok. So first you get me arrested and now you have an attitude?

Maisha: just saying...I can phase, remember?

Amarie: you're strong enough to phase two people

Maisha(scoffs) I'm a rank 6. Of course I can

Amarie: huh...useful

Maisha: I'll be right back. I'm gonna go make sure the hallways are clear. Once they're clear we have to move quickly before they realize you're gone.

Maisha phases through the wall and leaves Amarie in the cell.

Amarie: god she's bossy

After a few minutes of waiting around her cell. Maisha phases into the cell.

Maisha: It's all clear. We just need to make sure we avoid the cameras and not set off any alarms. (Reaches hand out) C'mon. Let's get you out of here

Amarie takes a deep breath and then grabs Maisha's hand. She closes her eyes as she and Maisha phase through the wall. She opens her eyes slowly and finds themselves in a bright, long hallway.

Maisha: This way and stay quiet.

The two girls swiftly move through the hallway. Each hallway the turn in to, the lights get dimmer and dimmer. After 5 minutes they reach a door at the back of the station.

Maisha: This is it. This will lead you to the back alley. I'm sure with your experience you'll manage just fine.

Amarie: You're not coming with me

Maisha: That wasn't part of the deal and after what I did, I didn't think you would want me to go with you.

Amarie, with a sad look on her face, opens the door. Before she walks through the door, Maisha kisses her on the cheek. Amarie gives her a slight smile and as she takes a step outside, a bullet flys by her head. Drops of blood start falling from her face.

Officer: Stop right there!(takes a few steps forward) Maisha?

Maisha: Dad?

Officer: Maisha sweetie, I don't understand. Are you helping this girl?

Maisa: I...yes. I am helping her. She did nothing wrong and you know that. How can you say you're protecting the people when you're hurting people like her? She deserves better.

Officer: People like her have no place in this world. They're weak and a nuisance to people like us, people who have power. Maisha move out of the way. I don't want to shoot you.

Maisha: If you want to kill her, you'll have to get through me first.

He holds up his gun with the finger on the trigger

Maisha: Amarie, run!

Amarie sprints out the door and into the back alley. She hears the door slam behind her but doesn't hear Maisha's footsteps. Amarie continues to run until her lungs give out. She sits down and remains in the back alley, resting, regaining her strength.

Amarie starts to hear faint footsteps that are getting louder and louder. She quickly gets to her feet, as she sees a shadowy figure coming her way.

Maisha: (quiet) Amarie?

Amarie: Maisha?

Maisha: Thank god you're ok. I managed to get out of there, but let's just say I won't be welcomed home for a while

Amarie: I'm sorry to ruin your relationship with your family. It seems like these days all I do are ruin things.

Maisha: You didn't ruin anything. My relationship with him wasn't the best to begin with. I tried to change his mind, but I should've known that wouldn't work.

so...do you, Sveinn, and Demir have room for one more?

Amarie:(smiles) Of course! We would be glad to have you join us. Now we just need to figure out where the hell they are.
