Chereads / The Devil is a Handsome Man / Chapter 20 - Coincidence

Chapter 20 - Coincidence

" Hah "

I looked at my hand and sighed.

" Sweetheart, don't you think that we are both connected by fate? That we are made for each other? " Lucifer teased.

" No, I don't. " I replied with a very obvious fake smile on my face and he chuckled.

' This is such a weird coincidence. But how in the world did I not notice this earlier? ' I thought.

Flashback

I was with my mother in the kitchen, helping with the food while Lucifer was in the living room, talking with my father. While I was cutting the salad, I noticed that my mother had been continuously staring at my hand.

" What's wrong mum? " I asked.

" Alexandra, show me your hand for a bit, would you? "

" Why mom? What happened? " I asked but still went near her and placed my hand in her palm.

She looked at my hand for a few seconds before releasing it.

" What happened mum? " I asked again and looked closely at my hand to try and figure out what she was looking at.

" I'll tell you once I confirm my suspicions. For now, let's go and set up the table, shall we? " She said and I nodded.

Lucifer and my dad helped us set up the table and soon we were all seated on the dining table. Me and Lucifer on one side while my parents were sitting in front of us from across the table.

" Lucifer, dear, do you mind showing me your hand for a second? " My mom asked him. He seemed a bit confused but obliged.

My mother looked at his hand for a few seconds before saying, " Wonderful! What an amazing coincidence! "

" Dear, what are you talking about? " My dad asked her.

" Their rings, they are couple rings. Don't you remember, the day we went to choose the ring, we saw a pair of couple rings but because Lucifer was going to buy the ring for Alexandra, we didn't buy the ring for the female and only bought the ring that was meant for the male..... We bought one ring while Lucifer bought the other one. "

The moment she said this, my eyes darted to the ring and I felt astonished.

" Yeah, you're right mom. " I said and looked up. At this exact same time Lucifer also looked up and our eyes met for a second before we both looked away.

" And this is what you call destiny. " My mother commented with a silly smile on her face.

" Okay , okay , enough of that. Now let's start, shall we? " I quickly stated before my mother started saying something else.

I was still finding it hard to believe that such a coincidence could happen. This actually feels like a scene straight out of a movie.

Other than this ring incident, everything else went completely fine. Lucifer was very polite to my parents and though it did feel kind of weird hearing someone else call my parents as mom and dad, I came to accept it towards the end. What was kind of surprising was the fact that my parents seemed to treat Lucifer just like a normal person, just like how a son-in-law is treated. They seemed to have thrown the fact that he is the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation out of their minds and this was something which I had not expected.

While I was thinking about all these things, suddenly a question came to me out of nowhere and I decided to ask it before I would die of curiosity.

" Lucifer... " I called out to him.

" Hmm? "

" You had no idea that you were going to marry me, right? "

" If I knew, do you think that you would be the person who would be sitting in the car with me? "

" How I wish that I would have known that the person behind the proposal were you, if that were the case then I would not have to be here today. " I said with a sad face as if I was grieving the fact that I had married him and then continued, " Anyway, I was wondering, why in the world did your father choose me as your bride? "

" That's because you fulfilled all the conditions. "

" Conditions? I was told only about one condition, were there any other too? "

" Well....."

(2 minutes later)

" So, you are telling me that you wanted a wife that would be pretty, be able to handle pressure and someone who loved to work, and you did not want a spoiled rich heiress or unemployed woman as your wife. On top of that you did not want the bride and yourself to know about each other's identity. "

" Exactly. "

" Why in the world would you keep the last condition? Now that I think about it, a person would have to be really stupid to agree to marry an anonymous man. For all I know, he could be a serial killer or a rapist!! "

" That was why I kept the last condition, so that my father would not be able to find a bride easily. But who would have thought that there would be a person stupid enough to actually agree. " he said and glared at me as if blaming me for this entire marriage.

" Hey! these things did not occur to me at that time, okay?.... In my defence, I trust my parents and they were praising you to the heavens so I decided to agree without giving much thought. " I quickly changed the topic and asked the question that was on my mind. " Oh and by the way, I was kind of curious as to why you did not want to marry a rich and unemployed woman. I mean I can understand why you wanted a pretty wife, afterall who doesn't and on top of that you also have an image to uphold, but what his your beef with rich or unemployed people? "

" Most heiresses are spoiled to the core and I can assure you that they probably haven't even taken a glass of water by themselves in the few years that they have been alive. Though they'll act as the most sophisticated people that you have ever met, who knows how they actually are deep down. As for umemployed women, I don't detest them, it's just that I would probably never be able to give my wife the attention and affection that she craves and I don't want to be pestered day and night regarding that. If a woman has a job, especially one that she loves, she would have less time to think about how to gain her husband's affection and how to force him to fulfill her wishes. " he explained.

" Hmm..... that makes sense. "

I went silent for a minute before saying, " I still don't understand why your father chose me. I mean, I know that I fulfilled all the conditions but I am sure that he would have been able to find numerous girls who would have fulfilled the conditions too. This is just too weird to be a coincidence. "

" I know, I have thought about it before too but I could not think of any reason so I guess the only person who would know the answer to this would be... my father. "

" Guess we'll just have to ask him. " I said.

A few minutes had passed since our last conversation, when suddenly something struck me.

' WAIT! hold up for a second! Didn't Lucifer just say that I fulfilled all the conditions? Doesn't that mean..... ' I thought and smiled mischievously.

" Lucifer.... " I called out sweetly with a bright smile on my face.

" Yeah... " he answered and looked at me warily as if trying to figure out what my plan is.

" You said that I fulfilled all the conditions, right? "

" Yeah... "

" Do you mind repeating the conditions once more? Please.. " I asked and tried my best to make a cute face which made him even more cautioned than he already was.

" The conditions were that my bride should be an employed woman who loves her work.. "

" Hmm.. " I kept hmming in between as if awaiting him to say those few words.

" She should be able to handle pressure.... "

" Hmm... "

" She should be pretty and she should not b-- "

" Wait! Please repeat the words you just said, will you? "

" Should not? "

" No, before that. "

" She should be? "

" No, just after that. " I said with emphasis on the word ' just ' .

" Pretty? "

" Yes " I said and continued speaking after a moment. " You said that I fulfilled all the conditions, and one of the conditions was to be pretty, so... Does that mean that you find me pretty, my dear husband? "

Once he finally realised what had just happened, he smirked devilishly before saying, " Of course I find you pretty sweetheart. You are the prettiest creature that I have ever laid my eyes upon. "

While saying these words, he slowly...
