- JANET SUHH "LIGHTING UP YOUR WORLD"
PATRICK'S POV:
Last week my official welcome in this school was over in a flash. Staring at the ground as I walked through the school's hallway. Nobody seemed to care that I was unfamiliar. Nobody seemed to care that I was unusual. Nobody seemed to even notice me. I had to take a glance down to make sure that there's no single spirit followed me. Luckily, there is none. I almost had a panic attack yesterday since the 5 yr. old. The boy from the park followed me here. He was playing all day long here in our school with the student's spirit in the vending machine. I should have been careful, I didn't notice he was a spirit. I grab the boy's arms when he tries to cross the road even the vehicle is coming. Too late, to realize.
I had once been told that I had the kind of face you forget even when looking directly at it. Good. I didn't want to be remembered. Attention had brought me only trouble in the past, so I did my best to dissolve into my surroundings. Music in my ears, I had a smile plastered across my face.
"Hey! Newbie!" Yoona suddenly appears in front of me. She's active, charming, brave, curious, talented, glamorous, eager, and sometimes a clever girl. Sounds like I've known her for many years. She has this character that everyone is a friend. So, for a one week experienced in this new school of mine, she told me all of her stories already. By the way, she looks cute with her braided hairstyle today.
"Morning" I mutter. A man of few words. That's who I am. I don't seek out special attention but, Yoona loves to hang out with me. I don't know why. Maybe because I'm new here. She nicknamed me "Newbie".
"Good Morning" She smiles widely. "I have good news actually, you remember Saya? " She giggles.
I just Nod.
Yoona stated that Saya was my seatmate but due to the subway explosion incident, She's been absent for almost a week already. Haven't met her. Not that curious at all.
"She called me this morning and guess what?" She chuckles.
"Hey, guys! The class will about to start" Derrick said while passing by unto us. He is the class president. He is an outgoing person and has a hard time turning away the attention of people around him. I kind of prefer him than Yoona actually. Yoona is getting chatty as time goes by.
These two anyway is my lunch buddy during break time.
"Wait, Is that Saya?" He said while looking someone from far away.
"Oh yeah! That's Saya" Yoona quickly walks towards her.
"Good morning Saya! Long-time no see!!!!" Derrick shouted. She looks at us with a preoccupied face. She might be wondering who I am. As I carefully look at her, I notice one thing. She's really beautiful.
Yoona runs towards her and immediately hugs her. "I miss you so much"
She holds her right hand, "I miss you more" then wink.
She gets closer to Derrick's direction quickly. Yoona, let go of her and quickly introduce me. I realize that she looks familiar as I stare at her. Unfortunately, I can't seem to remember. I am terrible with faces whether the person looks pretty or not.
"By the way, this new handsome guy beside Derrick is John Patrick May," Yoona said. "Hey, Newbie! This is Saya. My best friend and soon to be your seatmate. You will no longer feel loner since Saya is back to school" She's really straightforward as always.
"Hi Patrick, My name is Saya Menesis. Nice meeting you" she said while waving her right hand. I actually want to shake her hands.
"It's good to finally meet you" I respond. I suddenly feel uncomfortable, I don't know what could be the reason. I just feel like I've seen her before.
"Alright, let's go now. The class will start in a minute" Derrick interrupts.
As we get closer to the classroom, Yoona asks me with regarding the homework given by Mrs. Santos yesterday. Its math, everyone hates it except me. This clever girl knew it already so she asks me sometimes about complicated equations and homework. We are getting closer to our classroom when Saya surprisingly grabs my left arm. My brain stutters for a moment. "Is-Is there something wrong?"
Words left her. She stares at me like there's no yesterday.
"Saya, do you have nothing to say?" Yoona barge in.
"I'm sorry," She said and let go of my arm quickly. She then enters the classroom first.
"She mistook you for someone, I guess" Yoona comments before entering.
I don't know why but I think Saya really has something to say. She really looks familiar but I can't seem to remember where I saw her. I shook my head then enters the classroom.
NINE'S POV:
I disremembered everything they told me in school, but I recall the thrash. The terror of being in that fusty room at a single desk while the master strode from desk to desk still comes to me in silent flashes. The classroom was ordered, everywhere else was chaos. Looking back, I guess the bullies were simply the fastest learners, practicing "power and intimidation" on the rest of us. I smirk while realizing this.
Honestly, that was our education. We civilized that the influential inflict pain and hold sway over the rest who cower timidly and obediently do work. I don't wonder why our world is the way it is, how can it be any other? Don't we learn best by watching what others do rather than what they say?
Zero shared to me way back 50 years ago the reason I die.
SUICIDE.
I jump from the School's roof deck.
This is might be the reason why I am so cold with others. I never socialize even when I exist in the Human world.
Anyway, Saya finally finds the courage to face her extraordinary abilities. I didn't expect it actually. Maybe the last night incident helped her realize one thing. She can fight me back, which makes me infuriating more.
I decided to observe from a distance, by Flying.
Shit happens surprisingly, isn't it?
- I mutter as I witness what Saya Did.
Somehow, what happened last night is a good thing. She got the courage to go back to school because she figures it out, those stupid words that can fight me back. However, I know that once Saya meets Patrick, she will immediately realize that it all started with him and he's also special like her. It will also activate her sixth sense, right now she can only see Grim reapers like me. Once she started to have a vision with souls or spirits that will be the best time to eat her soul. I can't wait to witness her running crazy like the last time she did.
"Finally, my plan starts now" I murmur while having a devilish smile on my face.
"Being afraid means being brave, she's getting more frightened about her abilities but it will also help her to become stronger. Who knows? She might win against you."
"What the hell Four?!" He suddenly appears beside me and stutters those irritating words. "Whose side you are on?"
"Now I've seen her beautiful face, I think I will choose Saya over you" His response while having a ridiculous smile.
"Seriously?" With a vicious look.
"Of course, I'm just kidding. Anyway, I smell something weird earlier that's why I arrive late. I look for it, but it got an escape from me"
"You let a bad spirit escape from you? Are you getting weaker somehow?" This is the first time I've heard from Four that a bad spirit able to escape from him. Totally weird.
TOBY'S POV:
It's been a few days since the last time I've contacted Nick. The professors were not looking for him, so maybe they knew the reason for Nick's absence. By the way, Nick was my childhood friend. The only one actually. I don't usually socialize with my classmates which explains why I have only Nick as my friend. As soon my first half class ended, I went here in our college faculty and waited for our Calculus Professor. (FYI. I and Nick took Industrial Engineering)
As soon as our professor arrived, I asked him regarding Nick. He was hesitating at first for sharing it with me but since he knew that I'm the closest friend of Nick he thinks that I still have the right to know what happened with him.
"His Family begged me not to tell anyone in your class about this. So make a promise that you will only keep this to yourself. Do you understand Mr. Lee?
I immediately proceed now at the hospital where Nick got hospitalized.
"Unluckily, Nick got involved in the subway incident that happened last week. He is one of the survivors but, he's still in a critical condition." - The Calculus professor stated.
Nick's parents are now surprised to see me here. Luckily, they still let me inside.
As I walk closer, I can't help myself to show any signs of pain.
Looking at him with teary eyes. I heavily sighed.
"Hey, Nick! What the hell happened to you?" I stumble with a rasping voice.
My friend is now in comatose and suffering from a Fourth-degree burn. His whole body got burned from the explosion. Nick's parents mentioned that he was closed enough to the man who has the bomb.
After a few minutes talking with Nick's parents. I took a rest in the waiting area, somewhere located in the hospital. I look devastated. Nick is one of the most important people in my life. He's a friend that always supports me, no matter what the situation. He's also the reason why I made it to the university. I can't imagine my life without him. How am I going to face the future without him?
EPILOGUE:
WRITER'S POV:
Despite the fact that Toby's friend is now fighting for his life. The Soul of his friend is actually sitting beside him, watching his friend's weariness and anguish.
"Hey, Toby! Looks like I need to bid farewell to you. I'm really sorry." Nick said while sobbing.
