Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Fall of Daemon

The night deepened, casting the palace grounds into deeper shadows. Akin and his soldiers still kept their positions from where they were hidden, their breaths translucent in the cool of night. The distant hum of the city, coupled with the sporadic clanging of metal and the low murmurs of patrols, created a backdrop of tense anticipation.

Garrick, always the keen observer even under pressure—then indicated to a more scarcely protected angle of the palace where some ivy and foliage partially covered a narrow service entrance. He whispered, "That entrance leads into the palace's lower levels, it might be less guarded than the main gates."

Akin scrutinized the area, squinting to identify the fewer guards surrounding the service entrance. It could be a possible entrance, and the ivy could also work in their favour as a cover. "That one," Akin pointed at the entrance. "Move fast, but stay quiet."

The soldiers moved carefully, their footsteps deliberate and precise. Akin's heart pounded as they approached the service door, which Captain Jarek expertly broke the lock with a few targeted strikes. The door slowly creaked open, and it revealed a dark corridor with stones aligned on the walls.

The air inside was musty, unlike the refreshed night's air outside. Akin nodded to signal his men to enter and filed in one after the other, their steps muffled by the stone floor. They followed the corridor as it led them further into the palace.

It was their duty to locate Thorian and save him, no matter the cost. The path eventually split into different ways, and Akin paused to think. He read the map once more as it showed hidden entrances and service passages that could lead them to the palace's interior.

"Stay sharp," he said to his men. "There will be patrols here, and we may face some obstacles. Be ready."

The group moved cautiously through the maze of passages, their senses heightened. Every corner held the potential for danger and Akin was acutely aware of the stakes. His father's life was on the line, and they had to act with precision.

Walking carefully through a tight corridor, they heard the faint sound of footsteps. Akin signaled for his men to stop behind the walls. They hunkered themselves down into the shadows, barely breathing as the sound grew closer.

Two guards rounded the corner, their lanterns throwing a warm streak against the stone. Their voices were low, and their conversation revealed nothing of immediate concern. Akin and his men stood still as they walked past, adrenaline pumping from the possibility of having been seen.

As soon as the guards left their sights, Akin split the group into two teams of twenty-five soldiers. "The second team is to find my father, and I will lead the first team to find Daemon and put an end to his treachery" he ordered.

He then signaled for the group to advance and the second team departed as well, taking other passageways. They marched fast, yet carefully. The passageways grew more complex, and the air chillier, indicating they must be close to somewhere deeper in the heart of the palace.

Finally, they came to a large heavy wooden door adorning the crest of the Elaris royal family. This was it — the entrance to the main palace areas. Akin walked up to the door, but it was locked.

Captain Jarek took a step forward and began to work on the lock, using the skill he had for picking locks but Akin noticed how practiced Jarek was with it; his hands flew around even faster on this one than before while little tiny clicks gave way to their determination.

The heavy wooden door creaked open as a grand hall came into view, tapestries hanging on all walls and statues standing like frozen spectators in rows alongside towering columns. It was easy to see that the palace was majestic. Akin walked through the hallways, and his men followed him as they softly stepped on the marble floors.

As they moved through the palace, Akin's thoughts were a whirlwind. The palace, one a place of order and tradition, was now a potential battleground. Every room and corridor held the possibility of confrontation or discovery.

They passed a few house servants and were subjected to the curious fearful scrutiny of their eyes. The same nervousness that had descended upon the entire metropolis could be seen in their eyes, Akin noticed. He made a brief reassuring gesture, indicating that they were allies, not foes.

They made it to a spiraling flight of stairs, leading up. As they climbed, Akin's heart raced as they ascended, the anticipation of finding his father growing with each step. The upper levels of the palace were more opulent, with lavish decorations and luxurious furnishings.

At the top of the stairs, they encountered a set of ornate double doors. Akin could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him. These doors likely led to the inner chambers where Daemon or his men might be.

Akin signaled for his men to prepare. He knew that they would have to act quickly and definitively. Jarek and some of the others waited by each door for it to open, under Akin's order.

Akin nodded to Jarek and took a deep breath. The doors creaked open to reveal a massive chamber filled with all sorts of opulent furnishings. The light was low, and only a few candles in the room flickered softly and it was eerily quiet.

Akin's eyes scanned the room, searching for any sign of his father or Daemon. The chamber appeared to be empty, but the tension in the air was palpable. They moved cautiously, their footsteps muffled by the thick carpets.

Suddenly, a noise from an adjacent room caught their attention. Akin signaled for his men to follow him as they approached the source of the sound. The noise was faint but unmistakable---the sound of voices.

As they got closer to the door, Akin could hear some conversation. It was obvious that Daemon and his men were in the other room, discussing plans and strategies. Akin could hear his heart pounding in a mix of fear and determination.

He motioned for his men to stay quiet as he slowly opened the door by an inch. Through the narrow opening, he could see Daemon and several high-ranking officers gathered around a table, deliberating over maps and documents.

Daemon's voice was unmistakable, his tone cold and authoritative. "The capital is ours now, but we must ensure that Thorian is eliminated. His supporters are still a threat, and we cannot afford any mistakes."

Akin's fists clenched. Daemon's words were a chilling confirmation of the severity of the situation. They needed to act quickly to prevent any further plans from coming to fruition.

He motioned to Jarek and some of the others that they should move into position They would need to make a coordinated attack to take down Daemon and his men. It was a gamble, but it is their only chance to save the city and rescue his father.

As they prepared for the confrontation, Akin stopped to gather his thoughts. The fate of his father's life, the kingdom, and Elaris' future all depended on how this moment played out. He may have trained for battles, earning the right to be challenged by many, but this was a different story altogether. This was personal.

Akin gave an acknowledging nod to his men before he pushed the door open and stepped into the room. Daemon and his officers looked back toward him, their expression a mixture of surprise and anger.

"Daemon!" In a strong and clear voice, Akin spoke, "Your treachery ends here."

Chaos ensued in the room as Daemon and his men were caught off guard. What ensued was a heated and fiery confrontation. Akin and his men blended precision with determination, practicing moves that felt as familiar to them as breathing.

Despite the chaos, Akin remained focused, his eyes locked onto Daemon, who fought with brutal efficiency. The two men clashed, their swords meeting in a flurry of strikes and parries.

Akin's resolve was unwavering, he fought with the knowledge that the future of Elaris depended on this battle. Every blow, every cut was a measure in keeping his father alive and the future of their kingdom safe.

The battle raged on, the sounds of clashing steel and shouts could be heard echoing down the chamber as soon bodies collided in combat. Akin's men fought valiantly, they showed good swordplay and teamwork as they fought. Their resolve equaled Akin's during the battle against Daemon's soldiers.

Amid the fight, Akin managed to fight his way through the chaos to reach Daemon. Their swords clashed with a resounding clang, and Akin could feel the weight of his father's legacy in each strike. With bloodshot eyes, wild with hate and need, Daemon fought with fierce intensity, his eyes filled with a mixture of hatred and desperation.

The struggle seemed to last forever but Akin determination did not waver. Finally, with a final thrust of his sword, Akin drove his sword into Daemon's chest and pierced through his back, blood spurting out.

A shocked expression etched onto Daemon's face and with a forceful yank, Akin pulled his sword out of Daemon's lifeless body.

Akin gasped for breath, looking at the bloody aftermath of the battle. The room was littered with the remnants of the fight, bodies strewn about, and the silence that followed was a stark contrast to the chaos that had preceded it. Akin's men gathered around him, their expressions a mix of relief and exhaustion.

Akin approached Daemon's lifeless body, his heart heavy with a mixture of emotions. The treachery and betrayal that had put his father and the kingdom in danger were now over, but the cost of the battle weighed heavily on him.

Akin moved to the balcony, the gentle breeze caressing his face, looking down at the city of Eldoria he knew that it was a battle far from finished. There was much work to be done if Elaris wanted to re-establish peace. He had, for now at least, done a critically important thing to safeguard his father and the kingdom.

Akin took a final look at the city and turned to his men. "We won this battle, but the war is far from over. We must work to do the same for Elaris, and ensure that this victory leads to a lasting peace."

The men nodded and felt they could not fail after a victory. Akin focused on the hard times to come as they were about to depart from the palace and regroup and find his father. He knew the road to restoring order and reclaiming his kingdom was filled with many challenges, but he would meet them like a man.

Akin had survived the night in victory but still faced uncertainty and he knows that a very strong way to go. Yet with every step, he grew nearer to fulfilling his destiny and safeguarding the future of Elaris.
