Chapter 3 - It's Not You, It's Me

Miya stomped her feet on the corridor floor while muttering in annoyance. Her green academy robe moved slightly right and left as she walked quickly to her locker. Next to her was her best friend, Aden, who followed her in a hurry while continuing to ask Miya the problem. Miya suddenly stopped and turned to her best friend, "I don't understand why I have to be here." She said as she turned back and continued her walk.

Aden was left far behind with a million thoughts and questions about Miya's sudden behavior. He thought the girl was angry at him or some other reasons, but apparently his guess missed and Miya was just thinking about something as trivial as that. "You are here so you can become the High Warrior. You said that to me since we were little." Aden said after finally chasing Miya.

"You know that that wish was my mother's, who in fact is the owner of this damned school." Said Miya while forcibly opening her locker, almost breaking the key.

"You always tell me that you want to make it happen, right?" Aden asked. Miya turned to Aden, glared at him. She did tell him that she wanted to be the Light Warrior, exspecially when she sees the previous graduates picture hung on the Hall of Glass. It seemed that being a Great Warrior serving the Light Vow was a very honored task a scholar could ever achieved.

"That is indeed my dream. Until this morning." She said as she slammed the door of her locker and turned back hurrying somewhere. Aden gawked back into silence, left behind.

Miya stomped her shoes on the marble floor once more, making an echo in the empty hallways. She walked towards the door to the roof before hearing Aden's call behind her. She rolled her eyes knowing that Aden probably would share more pieces of his wise mind. He's about to be crown as a ruler of his kingdom anyways, what else would he do other than making everyone around him feel like a jackass?

"Please, Aden. Aren't you tired of chasing me like this?" Miya said when Aden arrived next to her. Aden just smiled as he opened the door for Miya. "Ladies first."

Miya sat on the floor and opened the lunch box she had prepared from the public kitchen in her dorm this morning. Madam Evangeline has her own quarter in the academy's gate where Miya also lived in. But Last night after hearing her mother's explanation she felt needed sometime alone.

Miya was stunned by Aden's classy lunch, then gawked when Aden turned to her lunch. "Are you sure you can live only on ham sandwiches?" Aden asked while putting food into his mouth. Miya nodded despite secretly trying to accept the reality that she might not survive even just for a day with ham sandwiches. "You don't usually eat this little lunch. Any problems at home?" Aden asked. Miya shook her head this time.

Actually she had a problem at home. But she was unwilling to tell this one problem to her dearest best friend. She was afraid that Aden would judge her. Moreover, Aden's very bright family background made Miya kind of feel low.

He came from the Beau royal family. Everyone in the land knew about the brilliant past of the royal families of the land. Beau was one of the aristocratic families who had fought against the tyranny of Dark Souls who ruled decades ago. Miya initially did not know Aden's family name. The guy never bothered telling her, he thought it was not that important. Then over time Miya finally realized that Aden is not just Aden. He is a prince--crown prince of Beau who is very dominant. Knowing this, she unconsciously began to keep hier distance from the man.

"You know I will listen if you talk, right?" Aden asked.

"I know," Miya said, tearing the sandwich and stuffing it in her mouth, "I just don't think I need to talk about this problem." Aden looked a little disappointed at first glance, but he changed his face again and then ate silently.

"Sorry, Ad," said Miya, who felt that she had just hurt Aden 's feelings. The man just smiled without looking back at Miya then they continued to eat in silence.

Miya came home with mixed feelings. She has not talked to her best friend since lunch. She felt like she is the bad guy even though she just wanted to have a little privacy for herself. And now she doesn't know where to go. She had no room in the dormitory and she is also never allowed to get out of the academy gate. That's what made her study hard to quickly became Light Soldiers. That's the only way she can get out of the academy wall that separates him from whatever is out there.

Unconsciously, Miya's legs took her back to her mother's house. And of course her mother was sitting on the porch, reading a book. When she noticed the presence of Miya, she immediately stood up and walked closer towards the girl. "I was looking for you this morning. Why did you leave without saying goodbye, dear?" Asked the woman. Miya just shook her head and walked inside. "I feel a little unwell. Sorry." She said.

Miya quickly rush her feet to go to the second floor and lay her heavy head down on her soft mattress and felt the bad, uneasy feeling again. But this time accompanied by extreme pain in her stomach. She guessed that pain is because those ham sandwiches. "What a perfect day," she muttered. She plans to protest to the cook in public kitchen about the quality of the food they provide.

Miya felt that her energy had been drained by the thinking since this afternoon. And now she must be in pain like this. She tried to close her eyes and fell asleep so that she could reduce the pain for a moment. But she failed everytime she tried.

She then remembered the spell she had learned from the recent Magical History and Magic Practice class. A spell to make someone fast asleep. Miya thinks about the risks that she can experience but for now the pain in her stomach is her priority.

Miya concentrated with the spell and then with a snap of the girl's fingers, she managed to fall asleep.

"Miya." Miya opened her eyes to a woman she had known as her mother. She felt her hand stroking Miya's pounding head. "The spell you are using is very dangerous, you know that?" Said her mother with a worried face. Miya shook her head to try to ease the pain and then tried to get up but was groaned in pain when she felt her stomach started to felt twisted.

She grimaced in pain while hugging her stomach with her hand as if what she was doing could tame down the pain she was experiencing. At first her mother panickly asking her what's wrong but she quickly realized what was happening after seeing Miya's bed cover. The girl finally experienced a menstrual cycle.

"You don't have to go to class for today, okay dear? You're probably tired."

"Huh?" Miya wrinkles her forehead. "How long did I sleep?"

"All day long."

"What?"

"You use a sleep spell that needs to be unspell again so that your careless self could wake up." Said her mother, pinching Miya's cheek in aggravation.

"I do not know that." She said as she sat back with a little difficulty. "There's no need to force yourself." Her mother said. Miya nodded her head and finally managed to sit up then smiled at her mother.

"You..-" The woman's words stopped when she heard the bell of her house. She immediately headed to the ground floor and opened the door. The woman was a little surprised by the presence of an honored guest on her porch. Aden smiled widely when he sees Madam Evangeline.

"Good morning, Madame Evangeline. Is Miya there? Last night I had a little fight with her, I just wanted to apologize." Aden said, bowing respectfully to the woman before him.

"Gosh, Ad. You don't need to be that formal to me. Miya is upstairs. Miya isn't feeling that well today." Said Madame Evangelinen invited Aden to enter with him.

"Really? Can she attend class?"

"I'm afraid she can't." Said Madame Evangeline, who was pouring tea for Aden. "Too bad." Aden said, slightly disappointed, "can I see her?"

"Oh sure, dear," Madame Evangeline said, handing Aden the tea she had brewed. They then climbed to the second floor and knocked on Miya's bedroom door again. "Miya, Aden wants to see you, dear." He said.

"Can you wait a minute? I'm changing my clothes." Miya said from inside.

"Oh, no need, dear. It's your day off, just wear what comfortable for you."

"I will wear as comfortable as possible, ma. Stop worrying." Miya said again from inside. Madame Evangeline smiled then turned to Aden, who was still stunned but realized he was being glanced at and then smiled.

"Come in." Miya said from the inside. Madame Evangeline opened the door and looked at Miya who was sitting on her bed. She looked a little neater, her hair was tied and her face seemed to have been washed.

"Honey, Ad came to see you. I will make a soup for you. Have you eaten, Aden?"

"Yes, I have, madame." Aden said while sitting on the bench next to Miya's bed. "Alright, I'll be back, okay?" Madame Evangeline closed the bedroom door.

Aden looked at Miya, then held her hand tightly. "Sorry." He said.

"Sorry for what?" Miya asked. "What I did to you yesterday was very childish. I didn't mean to cause trouble until you hurt like this."

Miya was still processing Aden's words while guessing the man's intentions. "Do you think I am sick because I'm thinking about your demeanor?" Miya asked. Aden nodded innocently.

"I have a period." Miya explained while releasing the grip of Aden's hand which was a little too warm for her.

Aden was silent. So he worries about things that aren't really there? "What?" Aden asked.

Miya laughed, "I just had PMS, silly." she said interrupted by her laughter. But she immediately grimaced because his stomach hurt again.

Aden immediately approached in panic, "Wha... Where does it hurt?" He asked while looking for the hurting part.

Miya laughed again as she reached for Aden and held him, "You are very sweet if you worry this much." She said as she stroked the top of Aden's head, "Thank you for caring." Miya said again.

Aden looked back at Miya. There's an urge in him growing steadily everytime he sees Miya. Maybe this is the right time to take a step forward, he thought to himself. Aden stroked Miya's face with his hand and closed his eyes while bringing his face closer to Miya's face.

The girl held her breath, aware of what Aden was about to do. Her heart fluttered and her brain was failed to work at the time.

"Miya, do you need leeks with your soup?" Madame Evangeline entered without knocking, startling the two teenagers who had almost landed their lips into one another. They qucikly fix their position before Madame Evangeline saw them.

"Oh am I disturbing your conversation?" Madame Evangeline asked.

"Oh no, no, madame. We're just talking about the weather." Aden said looking for an excuse. "Let me." Aden continued to grab the tray of soup for Miya.

"Oh no, honey." Madame Evangeline said. But the tray was already in Aden's hands. "I will get permission from class to take care of Miya today, madame." He said while smiling at Miya. Madame Evangeline frowned.

"Luca, I know Miya is your precious friend, but you shouldn't get permission. I can take care of Miya for you." Madame Evangeline said, patting Aden on the shoulder.

"It's all right, madame. I think you have more work to take care of. So let me take care of Miya for you."

"You're so sweet, Ad. Then I'll leave Miya with you." Madame Evangeline said half worried. Aden nodded and Madame Evangeline left Miya's room. Aden quickly glanced back to Miya and put the bowl of soup on a nightstand beside Miya's bed. "All right. Now. Tell me your problem." Aden said, completely forgetting what he was about to do to Miya.
