[ Melania Evergreen's POV ]
My eyelids quivered open, and a sight of an unfamiliar room came into view. Ah, that's right, this is the inn I am staying at. The light that flowed into the room from the window was bright, the sun is already up. I woke up a little late, but I'll forgive myself because my body was probably tired.
I staggeringly got up and walked over to a bucket of water provided from last night and I washed my face with it. The water has become cold overnight, but it woke me up thanks to that. Afterwards, I dressed myself and tidied up my room. When my stomach growled in protest of hunger, so I decided to come out of my room and eat breakfast. The auntie of the inn said that breakfast was free, which is nice.
So I went over to the front counter and addressed the auntie.
" Excuse me, can I have breakfast? ". I asked.
" Why of course, dear~ Don't worry, breakfast is free of charge~ Go ahead and grab a seat. ".
" Thank you. ". I answered.
I walked over to the seating area and grabbed a seat, the seating area wasn't as crowded today as last time. People probably has eaten breakfast earlier, there were only 6 other people beside me here, and all of them seem like they're sick, probably hungover. Poor them..
Not long after I sat down, the food was brought up to me by the auntie.
" Here you go, honey~ enjoy~ ". She said, as she set the food in front of me.
" Thank you very much. ".
The meal was a simple toasted piece of bread with scrambled eggs on top of it, along with a light soup, and a glass of juice. I'm not sure what fruit this juice is from, but it's good and I won't complain. The toast was perfect, the eggs were fluffy and soft, and the soup was energizing. It was a pretty fulfilling meal, I'm amazed it's free of charge. I'm starting to get suspicious...
After finishing my meal, I headed towards the Adventurer's Guild, but, on the way I decided to stop by a clothing store which caught my attention. I planned to only buy a couple sets of under garments, but I got carried away and accidentally spent too much money.. The persuasion skills of the store clerk was scary..
I hurriedly put away the things I bought, and immediately went straight to the Guild, this time I didn't get distracted by anymore stores. I am very proud of myself.
The Guild building was a 5 story tall, stone brick building. The vicinity was crowded by all kinds of Adventurers, of many different races and of both genders. People were looking for quests from the quest billboard, they all look very professional. Someday, will I too become professionals like them?
I went inside the building, even inside, it was packed almost full of people. It was hard to navigate my way through the crowd, so it took a while before I reached the reception. The countertops for the receptionists were crowded, but two particular good looking receptionists has an absurdly long line, so I avoided them, and lined up with the more rational people. There was one counter that was completely empty, but the receptionist that was behind that counter was really, extremely, absolutely scary. Yea, no thanks.
The wait wasn't too long, and I quickly managed to register myself. The fee was really expensive.. I'm now dangerously broke. I need to find a job, stat. The receptionist told me to wait for my card to be made, so I sat down on a nearby bench and waited.
While waiting, I saw a gorgeous young boy with long black hair and purplish eyes, who walked up to the counter with the scary looking uncle behind it. Now I wonder who this brave soul is. Also noticing his behavior, the people around me started whispering among themselves.
" Holy shit, who's that kid? How does he have the balls to actually go up to Micah's counter??? ". One of them whispered.
" I dunno man, but one thing's for certain. If he can go up to a guy like Micah, then he sure is able to kick your ass. ". The other one answered. Both of them seem like chatty housewives.
The boy was also registering it seems, the uncle behind the counter and him were talking back and forth. I wonder what are they talking about? Unfortunately, even with my superior hearing because I'm an elf, I still can't hear them because I am sitting too far away.
The uncle finally caved in and let the boy register, the boy swiftly filled out the form and handed it back to the uncle. It must be nice to be able to write, huh? I can still read, but I can't for the life of me, write for whatever reason.
I was still observing the boy, before my name was called, saying my card is ready. So I went up to the counter and received my card. The receptionist asked me if I wanted to take a "test" to determine what rank I'll be starting at, so I said yes, and then the receptionist gave me instructions on paper about the location of the testing grounds. I was able to understand where and when the test will be held, but not much else.
I thanked the receptionist and headed out of the Guild. The place was located all the way over the other side of the city. So far away! Why! I sighed internally and headed over there.
It took me 30 whole minutes to get here. I managed to find the correct building by matching the words on the paper and the words on the building itself. I went up to an official and handed over my card to him. He gave me a ticket with a number on it, the number 13 was on mine, he said it's my turn number.
There was still a bit of time before the test starts and I was a little thirsty, so I searched for a vendor who sold drinks. After a while of searching, I found a stall that sold juice. It was 2 Small Copper coins per cup, so I bought one. The taste was a little bad... It was room temperature, very sour, a little bitter, and very coarse. Disgusted, I threw the cup away into a garbage bin.
I checked the clock tower for the time, and much to my surprise, the test should have started by now, I spent too much time on searching for a drink. The drink wasn't even good. I quickly rushed towards the testing center.
Fortunately, I made it to the testing center in time, so I went on inside. I looked for where the test will be held at, and then I found two people in the middle of a mini fighting arena, sparring against one another. And surrounding it, people were sitting around on benches. Confident I had located the spot, I went over to the seating area. There, I once again saw the boy from the Guild earlier, the one with long black hair and purple eyes. Curious, I tried to strike a conversation with him.
" Umm.. Excuse me, but, what turn is this? ". I asked. I didn't get my hopes up, but surprisingly, he answered.
" The guy currently fighting there is turn number 6, what turn are you? ". He said.
" Oh thank god, my turn number is 13. ". Thank god I wasn't late.
" I see. ".
Not wanting to let this "conversation" die out, I introduced myself.
" Ah, yes, my name is Melania Evergreen, call me Mel. Nice to meet you. ".
" I'm Evan, nice to meet you too. ". Evan, eh? A disappointingly ordinary name.
Still trying to keep the flow going, I continued asking.
" Are you someone from the eastern hemisphere? Your black hair is quite rare. ".
" Something like that, that guy's red hair is way more rare though. ". He said, pointing at a Dragon Kin guy on the fighting ring.
" Yeah, dragon kin like him are really rare to come by. ". I said, trying to impress him.
" Also, why are you registering as an Adventurer, Evan? ". I asked yet again.
" No particular reason, just want a job to help kill time and make money from. ". He answered.
Damnit, he's the stoic and silent type, isn't he??
" So you have another job? ".
" Yeah, I do. ".
" I see. Well, let's do our best together! ". I said, now desperately trying to keep up the conversation.
I unconsciously started to ramble on about random stuff with him. He just kind of nodded and said "yeah" lifelessly to me. He's mean! In the middle of that, my turn number was called. I was reluctant to part with him, because he's really cute and all. But I must get on with my primary objective first.
" Oh, that's my turn. Well then, let's meet again sometime! Bye! Wish me luck! ". I said.
I then went over to the examiner to take on the test.
The rest of how it turned out... You readers already know, yeah? So no need to bore y'all with that.
