Chapter 19 - Change

Everyone else was asleep, I could feel the calmness of the house mix with my anxious thoughts. The room was pitch black, my eyes had adjusted as much as they could so I could see outlines of furniture around. My mind trying to convince me that a simple chair was a monster hunched over and waiting for the chance to attack me. My mind began to wonder, I began thinking about the monster that's just down the hall. How could a large creature be so quiet? I shook the uneasy feeling off that began to crawl up my spine. I gripped the bedsheet tightly, sweat pooled on my brow. I sat up and scooted back resting my head on the bed frame, a deep sigh escaping my lips. A headache began to grow, the painful feeling began crawling up my temples. My hands began to burn, I shook them to try and cool them off but to no avail. I stood up from the bed and slowly approached the door. The handle turned with a creak, the door had to but pushed a little harder than normal. I slowly walked towards the bathroom, a chill made me shiver. I entered the bathroom quickly and quietly, slowly shutting the door behind me. I flipped the light on and groaned at the blinding sting it caused. I turned the faucet on and splashed some water on my face. The water burned my cheeks, I grabbed a towel and patted the extra water off my face and neck. I felt uneasy, I looked up at the mirror. The red eye from that monster stared back at me. I jumped back almost tripping on the bathtub. In a second, the eye was gone. I let out a deep sigh and wiped the sweat from my forehead. "I'm just seeing things, it's not real." I assured myself, little comfort came from my words. I opened the bathroom door, a wave of heat hit my face. A putrid smell filled my nose. I gaged at the scent. A low gurgle shook the door. I pictured the monster in my head, how it's chained up. How it hasn't had a taste of food in who knows how long. How it's skin was peeling. How it's so, weak. My hands began to burn, one less creature to deal with sounded fantastic. I approached the door slowly, my feet sliding across the floor. I could feel a weight pull down my arm, my fingers wrapped around the handle. I grabbed the door handle, red light emitted from my hand. I opened the door, the monster looked back. Inky black tentacles shot towards me, in the blink of an eye my sword danced in the air. Pieces fell to the ground, I lunged forward. For the first time I was inside the room. The monster tried to back away, but the rusty chains held it in place. I didn't care about making noise, all I wanted was this thing dead. My sword pierced it's chest, a loud roar erupted from its mouth. I looked down at the sword, smoke went into the mouth of the skull. It's red eye was glowing brightly, I grinned. I pulled my sword out, the monsters body went limp as it fell to the ground with a hard thud. "Jacob!" I looked over my shoulder, granny was standing there with wide eyes. "Hey." I said calmly. Addy ran to the doorway, balls of white light gripped in her hand. "Jacob what the hell?!" I shrugged and rested the blade of my sword on my shoulder. Granny's eyes somehow widened. "That handle." She muttered breathlessly. Mom and dad came running as well, I simply nodded towards them. "Jacob, come with me now." I followed my father out of the room, I felt proud and satisfied. We walked into my room, he shut the door once I entered. "What the hell was that?!" He shouted at me, it's been a long time since he's yelled at me. "What are you talking about?" I asked. "You killed that creature!" He shouted. "Okay, and? I thought that's what we did." He shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. "Yes, we fight them. But we fight fairly, we don't chain them down and kill them for sport." I placed the tip of the blade on the ground and slightly leaned on it. "It was an easy kill, no harm done. Plus no humans will find the body." He sighed and pushed a messy hair strand out of his face. "We're still human, you're still human Jacob. Just because we have power doesn't mean we're not human, and you did cause harm. You killed a creature that was weak and couldn't fight back." I scoffed. "You're seriously scolding me for doing what my life now revolves around, after how many years of keeping it from me?" He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. "That's what I thought." I walked past him, our shoulders collided and I added a little more force than needed. I opened the door and walked to the end of the hall, the monsters body was starting to melt and sink into the floor. Granny looked back at me, a new look in her eyes. "Explain." She demanded, I chuckled. "Why is everyone so angry about me killing some damn monster, it's not that big of a deal." Granny took a step towards me. "It is a big deal because the real Jacob wouldn't do this. He wouldn't kill something without a reason to." I glared at her. "Then you don't know me very well." I spook through gritted teeth, she stepped back. Addy approached me, before I could react a slap rang out through the air. I felt my cheek, a handprint bruise was already starting to form. Addy glared at me. "What is wrong with you? It's that damn handle isn't it?!" I laughed then held the sword up with the blade facing the ground. "This thing?" She glanced at the skull, I could see the shiver go through her. "Jacob, get rid of it." I smiled. "Okay." The sword dispersed in my hand. "No, the handle. Get rid of it, burn it, destroy it." I rolled my eyes. "Why should I? So I can be weaker? So you all can hold power over my head?" Addy shook her head. "It's not that Jacob and you know it." I held my hands up and took a step back. "Whatever, I'm sorry you can't treat me like a little kid anymore." I walked to the end of the hall and down the stairs. I grabbed dad's keys and walked out the front door. The car started with a purr and I backed out of the driveway. I didn't know where I was going or how long I was going to be gone. I just needed air, I needed space. I drove for a few hours, eventually I made it out of town. I stopped at a gas station to grab a snack and refill the tank. I pushed the glass door, a bell rang signaling my entry. "Welcome!" I heard an older man shout from the register. It looked like I was the only customer there which made sense since it was close to one in the morning. I walked along the isles, nothing looked good but I decided to get an energy drink. I felt around my pockets. "Damn." I had forgotten my wallet at the house, there was no way in hell I was going back yet. I placed the drink back, but then I thought of an idea. I looked towards the man, he was looking down at what I guessed to be his phone. I looked up, a rotating camera was pointing in my direction. Then after a few moments it slowly turned away. Behind the man was a wall of different cigarette brands, I stared at one case. My gaze felt dangerous, and powerful. Suddenly the case caught fire, I quickly looked away and glanced up. The camera was facing me. Just a second to wait. "Oh shit!" The camera was off. I quickly stuffed the drink in my pocket and covered the top with my shirt. I grabbed the fire extinguisher on the wall and dashed to the guy. "Here!" He took it and blasted the fire, it was out in a moment. "Damn, Thanks kid." I nodded my head and pretended to be surprised. "What could've caused that?" I asked. "I don't know, first that's ever happened to me." I hit the counter lightly. "Stay safe man." He nodded towards me and looked back to examine the damage. I took the opportunity to exit the store, I got in the car and took out my prize. I opened the can with a sizzling pop, the cool fruity flavor tasted delicious. I drove out of there, a firetruck dashed passed me. It was probably called due to the smoke. I decided I'd had enough fun for the night. I drove back to the house. I pulled into the driveway, granny's car was gone. I shrugged it off and entered the house. I immediately noticed the note on the table. "We left, you need time to cool down. So do we. We'll come back tomorrow. From, Addy." I could hear Addy speaking as I read her note. My jaw clenched. I threw the note down and walked up the stairs, the door at the end of the hall was left open a crack. I pushed the door open, the room was empty, the creatures body had melted completely. I walked over to my room and fell onto the bed. This time, I could sleep.
