Chapter 6 - Chapter Six

Scarlett's P.O.V

"Who are these shapeshifters?" Scarlett asked Grace.

"Shapeshifters are people that possess powerful, ancient magic. With their magic, they can shapeshift into any form they choose. Be it animal or human form." Grace answered.

"You said that you were once direwolves?"

"Yes. Direwolves can change into wolves anytime, and they don't attack people. As werewolves, we were cursed to change into vicious wolves at every full moon. We attacked and killed people. This town is infamous for wolves attacking people." Grace finished.

Scarlett expelled breath through her lips. She rubbed her hand against her forehead. "So how did you know that I am sixteen today?"

"I knew because I kept count, ever since your mother left pregnant. But it's generally an estimate." She said with a shrug.

"So if my father was a shapeshifter, and my mother a direwolf, that means I am both. A hybrid. That means I must possess both sides abilities." Scarlett said with wonder in her voice. She looked down at both her hands.

"Yes, I suppose." Grace replied. "But perhaps, I should introduce you to the pack first. They are anxious to meet you."

"Ok." Scarlett followed Grace out of the bedroom into the living room. The people she saw earlier sat down, chattering. When they entered, they all turned to look.

"Everybody," Grace began. "This is Scarlett Moon. She is John's and Rose's daughter."

A murmur of surprise rippled through them. The man who spoke earlier in the bedroom, came forth and extended his hand to Scarlett.

"I'm Evans." He said. Scarlett shook his hand.

"And I'm Lizzy." Said a woman. She also shook Scarlett's hand. "I'm Evan's wife." Scarlett smiled politely as she acknowledged their greetings.

"These are our sons." The woman continued. Two boys emerged from behind them. One looked twelve years while the other looked eight years.

"This is Nick," Lizzy gestured to the older one, "And this is Dave." She motioned to the other. The two boys blankly looked up at Scarlett and said nothing. Scarlett felt overwhelmed by all the introductions.

"Hello, there Miss Moon." A man who looked like he would be in his forties, walked briskly, towards Scarlett.

"This is Grandpa Ben." Grace said with a laugh. "He's your grandpa." Scarlett's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"Hello." Scarlett greeted, a little shy.

"Come here, little pie. Is that how you greet your old man when you see 'im?" Grandpa Ben said as he quickly gathered Scarlett into a furious embrace. Scarlett felt surely like, she would die of suffocation.

"This is Ava." Grace gestured to a girl who looked like she'd be seventeen. She looked standoffish and aloof.

"Hello." Ava said somehow reluctantly, and tossed her brownish hair to the side.

"She's Evan's and Lizzy's daughter." Grace explained. "Forgive her poor manners. She's more agreeable if you get to know her."

"Hi." Scarlett returned Ava's greeting with uncertainty.

"Finally, there goes Logan." Grace said. Logan was standing in the kitchen, cooking. He heard Grace over and nodded in greeting at me. I nodded back.

"He just recently joined us here." Whispered Grace. I looked over once again, at Logan. I was mystified by what Grace just told me.

Was he like me too? Was he suddenly thrust into this unknown, strange world like me? Did he also feel out of place here too? Scarlett couldn't help but wonder.

Few minutes later, they all sat down at the dining table, having breakfast. Pancakes with syrup, fried eggs, bacon, steaming cups of coffee and tea, toast, sausages and deep-fried potatoes filled the table. Each person took some of each in their plates, with a steaming cup of coffee or tea. Scarlett took coffee. She sat in between Grandpa Ben and Grandma Grace.

I suppose I can call her grandma, now that I know she is.

Scarlett sat across from Logan. Logan ate quietly, hardly looking up from his plate. All around, others chatted and laughed. Nick and Dave goofed around with their food, Evans and Lizzy chatted with Grandpa and Grandma. Grandpa kept talking really loudly beside me, that my ears began to ache. Ava picked at her food and seemed to be throwing daggers in my direction.

Geez. What's with her?

Scarlett's gaze wondered once again to Logan. He had long, shoulder-length golden hair that he let loosely around his face. It covered a portion of his face. When he looked up, green emerald orbs stared back at Scarlett. Suddenly she felt unnerved and self-consious.

What's wrong with me?

Scarlett once again began to wonder what had brought him here in the first place. What's his story behind his being here? He looks so brooding and mysterious. Scarlett suddenly felt drawn to him, and curious too.

Finishing his food, Logan stood up and left the table. Scarlett quicky gobbled up the remaining bits of food from her plate, drank all of her coffee (She prefers coffee to tea), and stood up from the table. She went into the kitchen and dropped her plate and cup in the sink. Logan wasn't here in the kitchen. Ava came in and also dropped her plate.

"Hi." Scarlett tried to be friendly with her. But she suddenly turned to look at Scarlett, her face simmering with unsuppressed hostility.

"Don't even think about going near Logan, because he's off limits." She spat out acidly. "He's my mate and I don't want you looking at him like you just did, at the dining table." She huffed and walked out with her nose in the air.

What a sass.

Scarlett rolled her eyes and put her hands in her pocket. She suddenly looked down at the clothes she was wearing and nearly shrieked out. She had been wearing her pyjamas the whole time! She had greeted all these people, dined with them in her PJs. Logan had even seen her in them.....

Oh, boy! I better go change!

She raced to her room and closed the door, gently. Maybe, just maybe, this new life wouldn't be so bad afterall.
