Natalia was sick of waking up on the forest floor and walking all day and then repeating the pattern again the next day. She wanted to be doing more than just running, she wanted to find some help and get Isaac back, and she wanted it to happen now, although she knew that nothing would happen just like that. She was going to have to fight to get her best friend back and she knew it. For Isaac she was prepared to do anything.
Carter lay beside her like always, she was lucky to still have him, she knew it, but her own paranoid suspicions were attacking her mind everytime he did something, she hated herself. How could she think her friend was working against them. She was so stupid sometimes.
'Tals' She shot up with a frown, it sounded like Isaac, although it was impossible.
"What?" she asked, assuming it to be Carter.
"I didn't say anything." he replied, shaking his head at her and sitting up also, "We've probably just been here too long."
She nodded, dismissing it as her overactive imagination, her mind wanting her to hear Isaac as though he was still beside them and not locked up in the labs once again.
"We should go." she agreed, nodding her head slightly. she grabbed her tangled red hair and forced it into a bun, away from her eyes and more difficult for anyone to grab hold of. She hated that she had to think about things like that.
Together they packed up their things, readying themselves for another day of walking. They soon came upon a long country road, line with trees and heading towards a little town, that looked so inviting to them.
"come on, let's go there." Carter suggested, neither of them wanted to go back into the woods, there were too many places to hide, too many places to be snuck upon.
'Natalia!' Isaac's voice echoed in her head once again, she shook her head, dismissing it to be a figment of her imagination, a voice of her want to get her best friend back.
"We should have taken some money." She mused, she felt dirty and unwelcome in this town, catching sight of the two in a shop window made her worry about just how scruffy they looked.
"If we go into shops we might get spotted." Carter replied, "We don't know whether they've got the police involved."
Natalia shivered, she had heard of the police, they seemed terrifying, more so than the scientists who were experimenting on them.
"We should keep going, hide in the crowds." Carter continued, he seemed to know what he was doing and she was glad for it, it meant that he had an idea of how to get them to safety, to get them somewhere they can prepare themselves to go and rescue Isaac.
"Yeah, yeah." She nodded, they continued down the street, mingling in the crowds of people going about their daily lives, barely giving them a second glance. They were enjoying the simplicity of being a normal person, a glimpse of normality. it made her upset, it was something she may never have, she still didn't know what effect the experiments would have on her in the future, if she ever got one.
it was a morbid thought, but it haunted her all the same. a big black car pulled up beside them, the two exchanged a glance and began to run. Both their fathers exited the vehicle and chased them, straight into an alley that led nowhere.
"Natalia, Carter, I do believe you will want to see this." Carter's father was holding a screen, he switched it on. Natalia glanced at the wall behind them, it was tall, but definitly led somewhere, it would be a difficult, but doable.
The screen showed Isaac in one of the labs, he was tied up, a bruise over his eyes, his lip bloodied and bust. Natalia felt her fists clench in anger, how dare they? How could they do that to him?
"Let him go!" She yelled before she could stop herself.
"The only way to stop this is to come home." Natalia's father took a step toward them, both stepping back, hitting the wall, they would have to make an escape soon or they would be captured. "If you come back, Isaac won't get hurt."
'Natalia please.' She heard Isaac's voice in her head once more. She must be going crazy, she probably just wanted to hear his voice again, after seeing the video of him that her father had just shown her, she was probably just manifesting his voice in her head.
"We aren't going back." Carter told them, he glanced at Natalia, who nodded. They were going to have to climb up the wall. She counted to three in her head, before reaching up and starting to climb the wall, Carter doing the same.
Her father grabbed her around the middle, pulling her off the wall, she fought against him, managing to get out of his grip, heading towards the street, he chased her, tackling her to the ground. She hit her head, hard.
She lifted her head, everything going blurry. Her father grabbed her again, dragging her towards the car, she kicked out at him, trying to get away.
All of a sudden, he let go of her and someone else was guiding her through the streets and into a building. Through her blurred vision she saw a boy, maybe a year or two older. He was dirty blonde. "Carter?" She mumbled.
"No." He replied softly, she suddenly saw a knife in his hand. "This is going to hurt okay."
"No." She mumbled, trying to push him away. She felt the blade of the knife push into the smooth skin of her neck. "Please." Her vision some, she felt blood pouring down her neck. "Stop."
The mysterious figure was digging around in the cut, she tried to stop him, but she didn't have enough strength. He finished doing whatever he was doing and began clumsily stitching it up, she could feel the needle repeatedly pricking her skin.
"I'm sorry." The mysterious person told her, she closes her eyes. "Hey, hey stay with me. Please stay with me."
But she was too tired to hold on.
