Chereads / Diary of the Dead / Chapter 8 - That Lingering Connection.

Chapter 8 - That Lingering Connection.

Trying the art possession on sober people, who were even more charged by caffeine in their system didn't go great. It took me even more weeks before I finally managed to possess some sober people as well. Fortunately or unfortunately the guy hasn't showed up yet, so as much as I will hate not seeing him again, I'll hate it even more if I miss the chance to talk to him. I had to master this before he finally showed up. They said it took them years so I'm not gonna feel bad about not getting this right earlier. Now I just hope this guy we were waiting for shows up for real pretty soon.

After two more week one day just like that when we were waiting by the cafeteria, that guy finally showed up.

With all the feelings that evoked in me last time, I couldn't focus on his appearance much. But now that I look closely, with a clearer mind, I can tell that he's indeed quiet handsome. With his sharp jawline and a little messy hair, and the way he was dressed in his long grey coat. It made him look quiet casual yet elegant. Funny how I was worried how to approach this guy as if I was worried how to talk about my feelings with my crush.

Before he left once again, I possessed the first target that caught my eye. It was a girl probably around my age. After getting in her body, I snooped around a bit and found out her name was Sydney Clark. Well, I think I'll use her name as well so not to raise suspicion in case someone showed up who already knew her.

As I was approaching him I racked my brains trying to figure out what I will say to him. I didn't know how to start a conversation with him, so I did the first thing that I could think of.

I bumped into him, on purpose, while making it look like an accident. And probably spilled some coffee on him.

"I'm so sorry. I ruined your shirt. I should have been more careful."I said as if I was innocent.

"It's alright, it happens, it's no big deal." He assured me in his deep voice while he snatched some tissues while wiping of the coffee from his coat.

"Still, I'm really sorry." of course I needed to come up with with something else.

"Do you have some time to spare? I'm Sydney Clark. Why don't we chat for a while? I mean, if that's okay?. You know what, since I ruined your shirt why don't I pay for your order?" I offer.

"You really don't have to" he laughed slightly.

"No, No I insist."

"Listen, you sound like a really nice person, but I'm sorry I'm taken. I'm happily married with a kid." He smiled apologetically.

"What?" I ask with a blank face. Did it really look like as if I was hitting on him?.

"I'm not hitting on you." I clarify but probably this human was blushing so he would definitely misundestrand me.

"Okay... " He trails of clearly not convinced.

"Look I know you don't know me, but I promise I'm not hitting on you." I was literally using hand guestures now.

" The reason I wanted to talk to you for a while is because you appear really familiar. I feel like I've seen you somewhere but I can't recall where." I sigh. "Normally that's not a problem. But I've recently suffered a... Head injury due to which I've lost most of my memories. I'm just trying to... figure out... what I don't remember." I smile awkwardly hoping he would get it.

"Oh, I see." he nods. "I'm really sorry, it must not have been easy on you. I shouldn't have assumed something like that, I apologize."

"Yeah, well I didn't want to come of all weird so I didn't mention that part. I was sort of wondering from where might I know you."

"Well, if I had to make a wild guess I would say... Maybe from there." he points at the picture at the wall behind the counter. At that instant my surprise became clearly evident by my widening of eyes. "As it so happens, I own this place so, I visit here time to time. If you are a come here quite often, you might have seen my photo up there or even me if you're that regular. I live outside this town, so my visit here is quite rare. I've never met you personally though. At least thats what I remember."

"Oh! I never...noticed that." I say out loud. "I mean, I must have seen that before but...I guess I never looked carefully. I'm sorry for bothering you out of the blue like this". I say smiling awkwardly.

"It's alright, I get it, you don't have to apologize for this". He smiles. " Wait! did you spill coffee on me on purpose? He asks raising one eyebrow.

"What!? NOOO! Honestly, I only noticed who you were after I bumped into you." I lie through my teeth. I shouldn't get caught like this now should I?

"Sure! I'll believe you." He laughs. "Anyways, it was nice meeting you, I'm Timothy Stanford by the way." He raises his hand.

"I'm... Sydney Clark." I shake his hand.

"Here you go, Sir." one of the Barista brings him a bottle of Sprite.

"You're getting a soft drink in a cafeteria?" I ask.

"Yeah what's wrong with it?I happen to love sprite. Plus I'm not very fond caffeine."

"It's funny." I laugh to which I receive a weird look from him. "Only because I don't like Soft drinks, but actually I love coffee a lot. In fact cappuccino is my favorite. Wait actually anything except Americano."

"Really?" He looks at me weirdly. " That choice... Seems quiet familiar." he whispers.

"what?"

"huh?" he looks at me suddenly "Oh never mind. It's nothing." he smiles politely.

No! Don't say that. Here I am trying to figure out my past you can't just tease and leave it like that!! Of course I can't keep pestering about it, so I had no other choice than to smile back politely.

"I should get going, it's getting late." He says and gets ready to leave." It was nice meeting you."

"Likewise." We shake hands and then he leaves.

As soon as he's out of the door. I leave her body. I check wether she realized anything or not. I made sure I made the exact same posture as she was making just before I posessed her to avoid any suspicion. Luckily she didn't notice anything and continued to drink her coffee as in never happened. She did make a weird face after sipping the coffee though. Guess it went cold. Damn it!.

I went to the table where Ken was waiting.

"So how did it go?" Ken asked trying to sound oblivious.

"Please. I can tell you've been eavesdropping."

"Hey, I worked hard! I wanted to make sure you don't screw up the possession."

"Yeah yeah, I get it, you were jus-" before I finish Ken interjected

"Hey! look!" He pointed towards the window.

I saw that, Timothy was there standing staring at something. As I followed his gaze I realized he was looking at Sydney. He looked a little confused. I guess he too felt that lingering connection that I felt. It was a little weird because the connection I felt was something deep as if we were lovers. But he told me he was happily married with a kid. Doesn't seem like I fit in that equation or anything. So what were we? Was he my ex? I didn't know. But he was the key to my past I was certain. And I'm going to do everything in my power to find out.
