Chloe POV
Today I decided to go to the office with Oliver. I asked him what was wrong with Ken but even he said he had no idea. I decided it let it be and continue with our mission.
On our way a little girl who was probably around ten years old stopped us. We were amused that she could see us but we were both bad at apparitions so it was not really much of a surprise.
"You guys are a cute couple, you should gift her flower mister." She said as she dug out a beautiful lily from her basket.
Our eyed widened at that and I looked at him hoping he will explain it to her, but somehow he seems even more flustered than I was. He stood there stunned.
"We are not a couple, but this lily is really beautiful." I smiled at her.
"Want it?"She asked. "You are pretty, you should keep it."
I smiled at her bold innocence before replying to her. "I don't have any money with me, I am sorry." I told her.
"You don't have to pay me. They are from my garden. They will bring you good luck, keep it." She gave it to me. She took another one out of her basket and gave it to Oliver. "You too Mister." After that she ran away.
It was a little weird interaction, but I still kept the lily. This was probably the first time I got any flowers since I died. It was the same for Oliver I guess, because I saw him stare at that lily for really long before giving a faint smile and looking up.
We arrived at the office as usual. We were hoping another similar routine, but I was surprised when she asked for a half day leave. Maybe she had to go somewhere. I hope it's with the person who called us the other day. I haven't seen any kind of interaction from her side after that call the other day. I was this close to believing that all of it was just a misunderstanding from our side.
I was getting anxious throughout the time we were here. All I could focus on was what was she planning. What if she was asking for another murder? Even thinking about it made me tremble in fear.
"Let's see if we can find out something significant today, who knows maybe we can prove to alive people that you are dead?" He tried to distract me from my own thoughts. I guess he could predict what was going on in my mind. I smiled at him faintly.
After the day was over we followed her as planned. She took her car so we hid in back, careful not to make it too obvious. I wish I could teleport, I hated feeling this powerless.
She drove for almost an hour to a very busy road. However she carefully slid into a very common abandoned alley. There was a guy wearing a black face mask and a cap that covered his face almost entirely. I guess he was waiting for her, because as soon as he saw her he adapted an alert stance.
Oliver and I peeked from outside the alley. We weren't visible yet, but we did not want to spook them in case our apparition manifested. We were very careful to not make even a single sound. We wanted to see everything that was supposed to be taking place. We focussed all our hearing ability on their exchange.
"You got it?" That man said in a very deep voice.
She nodded lightly before taking out something from her purse. She handed it to him but snatched it away the moment he was about to take it. "Be careful, it is very dangerous." She handed it to him.
"I have been doing this since I was a teenager, I got this." He put that thing in its pocket.
"That voice…" Oliver whispered next to me. I looked at him.
"What about it?" I asked him.
"It seems I have heard it before…" He shrugged.
"He has a very common voice, maybe that's why it feels so familiar?" I shrugged.
"He is leaving!" Oliver called out, and I looked back at their direction.
Before I could respond he ran at his direction. He went right through that imposter, who was coming back, and ran after him. I flinched back and pressed myself to the wall. It was such a thrilling moment that I forgot I was dead.
I waited there for Oliver, while that woman drove away with her car. After few minutes Oliver showed up next to me looking quiet frustrated.
"I lost him!!" He said me. "Dammit!!" He tried to punch the wall out of frustration, but his hand went right through it.
" Wait, how?" I asked him.
"His attire was pretty common, I guess he took off his mask and hat to blend into the crowd. I can't believe I missed such a golden opportunity!" He clenched his fist with anger.
"It's alright. We have our entire lifetime, we can figure things out." I consoled him, even though I felt bad at how the situation turned out. It looked like Oliver hated making mistakes, he was frustrated for a very long time.
