Chapter 116 - 115 Reprieve

Sweat drips from my head and keeps the humidity in the air. Making me feel hotter and sticky. I look down and sigh.

Of course I feel sticky, I'm still covered in blood.

After helping out, strengthening and defending the spot where the wall had been breached, I had snapped back to where the rest of my soldiers were, only to get another message and instruct more soldiers to be snapped to the next weakened section. This time I drank a bottle before I pushed the forces back to replace the broken section. Bavarthos showed up again and helped reinforcing the section before helping take down the Erl's forces who had made it through.

Now that I was back at our camp, relieved for a few hours to rest and eat, I walked to the showers to rinse off. Lukewarm water falls from a gravity fed bucket that I open up over me, not bothering to get undressed, lathering up my suit with the bar of soap that was available.

Only once I feel that my suit is clean enough do I take it off and hang it over the sapling woven privacy wall. I'm in a tank and work out shorts that I wear under my suit. Because I didn't think about it, I grimace at the thought of putting these dirty things back on. I snap me some clean things but wash myself again with the workout clothes on, efficiently cleaning them better than I thought they would come out.

I carry my wet suit and underclothes with me and wring them out to hang in my tent, grab some food and retire to my tent. I hang the clothes and suit and sit down, feeling empty and hollow, the food, bland and tasteless.

I feel wet moisture under my chin and wipe it away. I take another bite and realized my hand was shaking so bad that my spoonful of beans had slopped onto my lap. I set the spoon down and broke down.

Every single face that I took the life of runs through my mind and who will be mourning their loss. I push the plate away, no longer able to eat and cradle my face in my hands as I weep for all the unnecessary loss of life, all because the Erlking wanted to enslave and rule everyone.

I know that so many are willing to fight for the Erlking, but there are so many that are forced too.

I let it out and wipe my face with a napkin once I'm done. I pull the bowl back to me and force the rest of my food down.

'My head and eyes feel heavy, I think I'll close them for a second.'

"Sin. Sin. Hey, you should get into your cot to sleep, you'll end up stiff as a old oak sleeping like that."

I'm being slightly shaken awake, but I'm not complying. I wave my hand and mutter, "Leaves me be."

*Sigh* The audible annoyance just makes me hide my head in my arms and start to fade back into oblivion.

Suddenly I'm sliding backwards and starting to fall, but as I put my arms out to catch myself, a pair of arms wrap around me safely. They're warm and feel safe so I don't fight it as they put me more comfortably in their arms.

As I breathe in I notice a calming scent of chamomile and wood smoke. I nuzzle into the warm shoulder and drift back to oblivion.

...Bavarthos POV....

'This woman fell back asleep!

'Now what is she doing?'

She begins to nuzzle my shoulder and makes a whimper sound in her sleep. Looking up to the heavens I ask my self , Why? I look back down at her as I walk her to her cot, Only to do a double take.

What is that?!'

It's shiny.... She drooled! She drooled on me in her sleep!

IS THIS what I get for trying to help her sleep better?!

I set her down on the bed and grab the towel I see hanging up.

"Uck." I mutter wiping the drool off and hanging the towel back up.

I put the large blue bottle next to the bed and put the reports she'll be needing to read when she wakes up on the desk and place a paper weight on top. I hear footsteps approaching and snap away.

I'm over by the food area and can see to Sin and John's tent perfectly from here. I sit back with a bowl of food and eat while I watch John walk into their tent. I'm sure he'll find the files and give them a quick glance over.

Soon they will find out how much they actually will have benefited from making an alliance with me. I can't help but feel the smile spreading out across my face and take a bite of the beans that were in the bowl.

"Bleh." I put the bowl and spoon down,, wiping the contents of my mouth on a napkin that tasted better than that bowl of cold over salted beans.

I snap away to the wall, still spitting the taste of the beans out of my mouth when one of the soldiers under Sin's command looks at me and starts laughing.

"You had the beans too I'm guessing." She says with a smile that lights up her face.

"How could you tell?" Sarcasm drips from me and I snap me some berries.

Popping them into my mouth, the sweet, tart, burst of flavors help. I look out over the area that not long ago was filled with hundreds of thousands of the Erlkings men. Most have retreated held back by my prowling pets that now patrol the area in front of the wall.

"So what do you think of these beasts that showed up? I've never seen anything like them before." She asks me looking out over at my pets.

I internally roll my eyes, 'she's trying to make small talk with me now, great...'

'First thing that rolls out of my mouth is what I'll be sticking with.'

"Yeah, they sure are different. I'm glad they showed up. Who knows what would have happened if they had not."

I don't want to seem obviously like an outsider, the less who know my identity the better. My brothers and sisters would drug and toss me out on the battle field if they knew I was here. They couldn't beat me otherwise.

"Don't you think?" She says.

'Crap..'

"I apologize. I was lost in thought, can you repeat that please?"

"I said, that no one seems to know about these beasts other than they are on our side. Seems a little too good to be true, don't you think?"

I look at her name tag and see her name is Akiyama and that she is a captain under Sin. I hum in thought before replying.

"Maybe, but what if they are part of a new alliance that wanted to remain anonymous? Or they've had them the whole time, just they were a last resort option?"

"Those seem like reasonable theories, well soldier, I'm going to start working on getting more ballistics stocked up here. Keep an eye out till I return."

"Yes, Ma'am." I give her a quick salute, since my ranking on my uniform is under hers.

She nods and takes off.

'Great.... now I'm stuck here for a while.'

.....John's POV...

Walking into our tent, I'm greeted by the sight of Mary sleeping hard on the cot. I can tell she's showered and by the sight of the empty bowl on the desk, she was able to eat the beans.

I grimace at the thought. She probably forced them down not tasting anything anyways.

'Wish I hadn't been able to taste those things. eck'

I pull a blanket over her and let her sleep before heading to the desk to grab her empty bowl. I look down and see that their are some files and the newest report. I pick them up to read after I take the bowl back to be cleaned. I'm just opening up the folder to start reading it as I'm heading back to the tent when I hear Akiyama behind me.

"Colonial Lacroix, Sir. I need to ask you about a soldier we have here, discreetly."

I turn and frown at her, "You sound concerned. Who are we talking about?"

"Next to my post at the wall, there is a specialist there, but his uniform doesn't say if he's under you or Sin. He's a magic user, he snapped to the post and produced berries the same way. I was coming to ask you about him anyways, but when I told him to remain at the post he told me 'Yes, ma'am.' and used the wrong hand to salute."

I glance over to where her post is and see a soldier standing there watching out over the wall.

"Are you sure he's not one of the soldiers from our reinforcements?" I ask her.

"Not a hundred percent positive, but even they have tags that mark them as being under your or Sin's direct command. "

"Alright, I'll wake Sin up so we can make sure first. He looks like the same guy who came back with her after the wall was breached. It might be just coincidence but it's always better to make sure first. Go ahead and continue what you need to do, I'll handle this from here." I send her on her way and head back to the tent, wishing I didn't have to wake up Mary.
