They maneuvered through the twisting tunnels beneath the Valley of Kings. As Luna scrambled over boulders, her foot struck a hidden rock. Pain shot up her leg, but she forced herself forward, her ears tuned to the ominous slithering of the creature trailing them.
Every time they thought they'd put some distance between themselves and the beast, its haunting sounds echoed around a bend, playing tricks on their minds. Doubt gnawed at Luna: which way should they go? But for the carved symbols on the walls, they might have wandered endlessly in circles.
Luna's muscles ached with fatigue. She dared to hope that the beast was growing tired as well. Meanwhile, Jon, with furrowed brow, deciphered the directions indicated by arrows he'd etched years ago.
Observing their surroundings, Luna realized they'd arrived at a junction where three tunnels merged.
