After lunch, the rest of the school day pretty much was fine, until gym class. Now as a rule, I've never been a fan of sports, not because I can't handle doing things like that but because it's no fun when you're better than everyone.
We went to the locker rooms to get changed into our gym wear which basically consists of black shorts and a white tank top. I'm by my locker and next thing I hear is, "wow she really is the daughter of a celeb…. I mean look at her skin she actually glows and don't even get me started on the quality of her hair… seriously some people just get to live the life". I turn around and there's no one there with me in the room.
I guess I must have zoned out again, but wait a minute if there's no one here, then who did I hear and please don't tell me this shit is starting again, cos my mom would literally freak if she found out I was having this issue again.
"Asha please be hallucinating", I start chanting to myself. "Please be hallucinating, please be….." I'm suddenly interrupted by a slim brunette, "Wow so you love hallucinations so much", she said while trying to hold back a smile. "You do know there are drugs for that right and if you ask nicely enough I could totally get it for you". That attitude….. She seems so familiar…. of course. "You're the same girl Justin was arguing with during lunch aren't you?" I ask almost sure what the reply would be.
"Oh yes I am", she said with a curtsy while trying and failing to keep the smile from her face, before finally giving in and letting the smile and the laughter bubble to the surface.
I must say she looked amazing, with shoulder length brown hair, black eyes that shines like stars and her smile, well perfect that's the only description I got. She was average height for a girl, just a few inches shorter than I am and she looked like someone I would totally get along with in seconds. I mean she's got the crazy's.
"So Asha um... if you're done with the scan, may I at least get my results", she said while smirking at me. I love this girl already.
"Well if it pleases you, my lady", I said with a small bow before continuing "it is my pleasure to inform you that you have passed all my criterias". With that we both started laughing. "Alright let's go we're already late and you don't want to know what Mr Gates does to latecomers", she said while pulling me with her towards the exit of the locker room.
"Wait a minute", I said as we were getting closer to the gym. She stopped to look at me before asking "what's wrong?", I shook my head in reply and said, "I'm sorry. It's just that I don't know your name and I guess it's kinda wrong or should I say weird that you know mine and I don't know yours".
"Oh gal you don't need to stress about that. We like soul mates already…. ha ha ha, but to ease your mind weirdo, my name is Natalie". She then grabbed my hand and said, "Now can we go", not as a request but as information, cos next thing I knew I was being dragged to the gym by a death grip on my wrist.
Gal might look soft but she is strong.
***
Few minutes into gym period and I'm really hating my gym teacher right now, I've run, played volleyball and he still wouldn't let me rest, talking about how my energy could influence the other girls to try harder at what I'm pretty sure could cause someone's death. I mean who orders girls to do 20 laps around the gym, when it ain't a small gym for goodness sake.
"Asha, over here", Natalie called. I turned and was hit squarely in the face with a ball. Officially I'm pissed, like why would you call me at that specific moment, why didn't you just let it hit the back of my head, that I wouldn't have a problem with.
"I am so sorry", she said hurriedly. "I was tryna call you for something else…., but yikes your eyes are bloodshot". "Tell me something I can't feel", I whimper in pain.
"That must have been a really nasty hit, for it to have just dampened all the energy you had a few seconds ago". "Well I wouldn't say energy…. It's just reflex or should I say natures blessing but enough of that, I need to go to the bathroom… like now!!!!!".
"Okay boo slow down I got you", she said while trying to stop me from walking out the gym through a wall, I'm pretty sure my eyes looked dilated so bad right now, ah Asha why did you have to get hit on the very first day in school, at least you could've waited a few days before getting into such situations.
"Oh it's not so bad", wait what!!! "Please don't tell me I said that out loud", "Oh yes you did girl, but it's not such a bad first day. You made a friend and the group that comes with the friend, though I wouldn't trust that friend too much…."
I turned and made a face like 'what do you mean by that' and she literally started laughing like crazy and here I am tryna comprehend what the hell she was laughing at before she composed herself and then looking apologetic she said,
"I think we need to get to that bathroom quick and please don't make that face ever again especially with bloodshot eyes like you have now".
"Gal I'm gonna get you back for this", "hmm hmm you can try". With that we turned and waked out of the gym leaving our spectators behind.
We were walking down the hall to the bathroom when a guy came up to Natalie, grabbed her hand that was holding mine and started walking away with her without a simple courtesy of excuse. But boy did the guy look like he was up to something shady or my guts were on steroids.
Natalie just looked back at me and mouthed the words 'I'll be back in a sec okay'. And I'm like how could this day get worse, it's not possible.
I managed to get myself to the bathroom, only to wash my face and discover that my face didn't look like it took a hit some minutes ago. I stood there looking at my face for so long I zoned out again. Then I heard the voices again only this time one of them sounded so familiar but I couldn't place it.
"The search is still on and like I've said times without number, not every transfer student can be the niveum lupa", the female voice that sounded familiar said angrily. "She isn't even one of us and you're pushing…".
"I've said my piece", the other voice said cutting the female off, with urgency clear in his voice. "We're running outta time, soon enough it's gonna be too freaking late, so just do it already"...
I was patiently waiting to hear more but with the silence I got I could assume their conversation was over. But what did she mean by the niveum lupa and what has that got to do with a transfer student.
Wait!!! I am a transfer student, Aw hell nah. This ain't happening, sincerely this is too much all in a day…. Please when will it end?
I take a few more seconds to steady myself and then with one simple plan set on my mind, I head out the door to go to my locker only to come face to face with Xander looking like he's been tortured forever. Though I gotta say he looked really cute like that…mentally drooling, Asha now is not the time, I mentally scold myself.
"Hi", I say for lack of any other thing to say.
"Took you long enough… I was beginning to think you disappeared or something", wait how long has he been waiting and why? It's not like we've gotten along so great since we met.
"I'm sorry I took so long, but that aside why have you been waiting for me", I said nervously. "Well Natty came and threatened to murder me if I didn't apologize to you", he stated as a matter of fact like he was truly afraid of Natalie.
"Wait a minute, if she's threatening you…. I don't get it", I'm so confused I start brushing my hand through my hair. "Why would she even be threatening you in the first place and what are you supposed to apologize for?".
"Thing is", he starts running his hand through his hair in a nervous gesture. "The ball that hit you in the gym was my fault, we were just messing around and I sorta missed my aim... That's how come…", he just left the message hanging.
"Oh wow…. . . I gotta say, nicely done. Your aim was squared".
Without missing a beat, I just turn and walk away.
Don't ask me or even try to guilt me into saying anything nice… yeah I know he's not at fault, yes I know I should just let it go and before you say it, I also know that my reply wasn't shit. But am I gonna go back and do the right thing...… Hmm hmm, Hell to the No.
I got to my locker, packed up my things and walked straight outta the school without giving a second thought to my outfit, gym clothes in case you forgot.
I got to the school car park before I realized two vital things; 1- School wasn't over yet, so the probability of me hitching a ride home is zilch. 2- Even if I were to take a bus, I don't know the closest stop to my house, so I could just be left wandering the town while my mom goes mad looking for me.
I only had one option that was not looking so great right now cos the end result…. Well I'd say we all know how it ends.
I pulled my phone outta my bag and gave my mom a call. Now few things you need to know about my mom, 1- She scares easy. 2- Do not ever fall outta plan cos she could yell out your head for that. 3- Asha's safety is as important as the ozone layer is to humanity's survival on earth. I was clearly disobeying number two and the repercussions are almost always harder than the benefit.
She picked on the second ring, already frantic and coming up with crazy reasons to explain my calling her before schools over.
"Asha, baby what is it? Hope there's nothing wrong…. Wait I hope you weren't attacked or something. Talk to me baby, is it the teachers or were you….."
"Mom!!!!" I quickly cut her off before she can start hyperventilating. "Mom I'm fine. I just really need to go home and since I didn't come to school with my car, I was wondering if you could tell Adam to come pick me u…p", I finished nervously. I just didn't want her yelling at me especially over the phone.
"Young lady, you are gonna tell me exactly what the hell happened in that school today, cos you cannot tell me that you just suddenly want to go home and I'm supposed to accept that without any reason whatsoever. I already told you, I'm not gonna be easy this time, so you better spill or be prepared to get your ass back in that school and wait till closing time".
See what I mean.
"Mom, nothing happened I just… I'm just overwhelmed and I really wanna go home so pretty plea…."
"Asha, don't make this difficult for the both of us cos I know all that is a lie. You better spill it young lady or you go back and wait".
Wow mama bear ain't letting this one go. I hate me sometimes but I guess number three on mama's list is what I'm gonna use, I can't stay here any longer.
"Okay mom, thing is I was hit with a ball during gym and my face kinda healed before I got to the bathroom and I'm j…."
"Adam will be there in five minutes". Well, Asha you deserve a high five for miraculously walking out of this one with your ears still intact.
Since Adam was gonna be here in five I decided to just sit outside under one of the trees and listen to music before I end up hearing much worse than I did when I was in the bathroom.
I'm not sure I had been sitting under the tree for up to five minutes when Adam pulled up to the school's parking lot in my mom's black G-wagon. From the look on his face I could tell he hadn't seen me yet, so I just stood up, with my bag in hand and started walking to the car. As soon as he saw me walking towards the car, he smiled and came down to take my bag and open the door for me.
Seeing Adam always made me happy. He had been my mom's driver slash bodyguard for years now and he was especially helpful when my issues began, so I guess he was sorta like a daddy figure for me.
Adam was a young man, though he always says otherwise but to me he was pretty young maybe like early thirties young with dark curls almost as dark as mine, a very sharp face with eyes as blue as the sea, very muscular chest with rock hard abs…. (Before you judge me, remember daddy figure). He was a pretty tall man standing at six foot five, dark skinned and what else…. the smile of the gods and yet could manage to look as menacing as hell in a second. Today he was dressed in the usual outfit, a black suit with a crisp white shirt under and a black tie to match, except the shoes.
Adam always manages to come up with the strangest shoes to wear, with the strangest colors. At first my mom had tried to change that about him, she tried pleading with him even to the point of threatening him but you know what? She failed and that's how come I'm staring at red and blue boots today.
"Hey lady", he said as he opened the door for me. I was so tired I didn't even realize I had replied him with a weak "hey mister", until he held my left arm and turned me till we were face to face and asked "what's the problem?"
Two things you need to know about Adam, 1- he is as paranoid as my mum when it comes to my safety. 2- Adam will never let anything go especially when it comes to pretty Asha.
"Hey what is it?" He pushed further. "I'm fine really", I said while tryna paste a healthy and believable smile on my face for him but the look on his face had me saying quickly, "before you say something else", I said raising a finger to halt whatever he was about to say, "I'm just tired that's all. I guess the whole first day thing might have been too much for me".
The skeptic look he gave me was one that silently said, "I don't buy that crap but we're revisiting this later". But he just shook his head, smiled and said "alright dear, get in, your mom's calling and we don't wanna make her mad now do we?" he didn't have to tell me twice. I was seated and strapped in, in seconds. When he was sure that I was comfortable, he got in the driver's seat and took off without using his seat belt, another thing he still hasn't changed since I've known him.
