Chapter 2 - 1. Normality

"Sam! Come help with the groceries!" my dad yelled.

"Just a sec," I shouted back.

"Hurry up," He said. "I'm coming, hold on," I said.

I walked downstairs and out the front door. I stood in awe seeing our front yard. We moved in over a week ago, but I still couldn't believe that we were living in such a nice house.

I walked to the car and started to pick up groceries. My dad was coming back for a second round as we bought a lot of food to restock the fridge.

"Took you long enough," he said.

"I'll handle this, go rest, old man."

He scoffed at my words and laughed, "Ha, I'll show you old!"

He nudged me in the side and picked up the rest of the groceries. I stood back and smiled to myself without him noticing.

I followed him back inside as he struggled with every step. After we passed the front door, I passed by him, running to the kitchen.

"Hi mom, I'll help you put them up," I said as she turned around. "Thanks honey, where's your father," She asked. I pointed behind me as my dad stumbled his way into the kitchen. My mother looked back to me with a sweet smile, then gave me a hard thump on the forehead.

"What was that for!?" I protested. She shrugged and continued to sort through the can food.

I looked over to my dad and said, "you good?"

He looked at me, "perfectly fine no thanks to you," he said while hyperventilating.

After we finished, I wandered around the house thinking about before we moved in.

////

"Sam! Good news!"

"What's up," I said as I took off my headset.

"We're moving," He said enthusiastically.

"Oh, ok," I said as I tuned around and put my headphones back on.

"Come on! At least show some reaction..." he said feinting disappointment. I looked at him with a blank look on my face.

"This is the forth time this year..." I sighed. "Where we going?"

His face lit up at my words, "Atlantis!" I looked at him with a smile, then promptly ignored him.

"I'm kidding, we're moving to a small town near the west coast," He said. "Your mother got a job offer and she took it. Not only is the pay amazing, but they are also letting us stay at a nice house for free."

"I can continue my research and you can finally stay at a school long enough to make friends," He said with a sincere smile.

"It's the middle of the school year, and I'm not exactly the social type. Not only that but I'm sure that everyone there is gonna be an attention wh**e trying to be the next big celebrities," I said with a sneer.

"Oh, don't be like that. You used to be like that too, right?"

"Yeah, thanks for reminding me," I said while feeling regret. "Anyway, I'll start packing," I said as I walked out.

I watched as Sam walked out and sighed. 'If my research turns out to be right, he won't have a choice but to be the thing he hates most, a hero.'

I walked into my bedroom and seen my wife laying in bed.

"Hey honey, did you talk to Sam?"

"Yeah, he didn't give it much thought," I said.

"You still haven't told him why we are really going there, have you?"

"No, he wouldn't believe me anyway."

"That may be so but he deserves to know what's in store for him."

"I'll tell him when we get settled in at the new house."

"Ok.....how's your research coming?"

"We've come to the point where we should assume the worst."

".....I see, I will notify my superiors," she said with a sad look. "Why does it have to be us? Why couldn't we just be a normal family!?" She said while slightly panicking.

I hugged her to calm her down, "we still have time...we must prepare our son and the rest of Abnormals to fight."

"You're right, they are our only hope."

////

I walked around our new home, still in disbelief that it's ours. As I was walking around, my dad texted me, he told me to meet him in his study. I walked out the back to the "shed," which was bigger than out last house. I walked in and my dad motioned for me to sit down.

As I sat down, he started speaking. "Sam, we need to talk."

"About?" I asked.

"This new school you're going to, there's something I've been meaning to tell you. All of the students have been handpicked by Fostergen, the company your mother and I work for."

"And?" I said in confusion.

"They call you and people like you Abnormals."

"Explain," I said with a frown.

"My research has finally born fruit. I never said anything till now as to not scare you, but time is of the essence. We discovered a type of energy in the atmosphere that was unidentifiable. It has no mass, it's similar to a wave but behaves like photons of light. I discovered it by accident while performing an experiment based on an old idea I had about how gravity and light may affect one another."

"I'm not really getting the point of this. What are you trying to say?"

"I wasn't finished. We created devices to observe this energy and found out that it interacts with all living organisms. Especially so with smarter animals, such as humans."

"Ok, so this energy that interacts with stuff, so what? What does this have to do with me?"

"Well, we found out that certain organisms can manipulate this energy to their will. This is where you come in, or rather, the Abnormals. The energy can be manipulated to create natural phenomena and in rare cases, un-natural phenomena."

"So you're saying that I can create lightning or something crazy like that? You and your company must be high on something."

My dad gave me a smile, "humor me, touch this orb and focus on the marble in the middle," He brought out a glass orb from his desk with a blue marble in the middle. It was small enough to fit in my palm.

"What is this," I asked.

"Just do it."

"Ok..." I touched the orb and focused on the marble. It started to glow and I felt an electrical current going up my arm, making the hair on my arm stand up. Blue sparks were crackling in my palm. "What is this," I exclaimed.

"It's called mana,"My dad said with a refreshing smile.

(AN: Wow, I finally finished my first chapter, hope you enjoyed it. I'll try to write another one next week.)
