Chapter 39 - The Cause

It was time for the second shift.

Kongwen stood in concentration as his eyes watched over all directions.

He crouched low on top of a tree branch

Rustle.. rustle…

The trees made sounds as the strong breeze blew through them.

Kongwen looked in a certain direction.

He was looking up north from where stood. He took an arrow from his quiver and set it in his bow.

He stood silently on the tree branch, and a few minutes later, he saw a staggering human figure.

The figure was staggering as he walked, and Kongwen could see the blood trail that followed the individual.

To be cautious, he released the arrow and it landed in front of the human figure, prompting him to stop.

There was a strange silence as the leaves in the silent forest fluttered.

Kongwen and the figure stood silently before

Bam!

The figure fell down.

Kongwen couldn't help but escape a gasp. He was surprised by the sudden collapse of the figure.

He took out a bone flute from his chest pocket and blew it. After that, he nimbly jumped down from the tree and approached the collapsed figure.

He stood a few meters from him, and within a minute, four figures appeared behind him.

They were the other bodyguards with their leader Rexi among them.

Rexi said after noticing the collapsed figure, "Kongwen what is it?"

Kongwen replied stiffly. "Saw him, shot at the front, and fell down."

The others were not surprised by how Kongwen spoke. They are used to his short and precise manner of speech as if his words are worth money.

Rexi walked towards the collapsed man and crouched down.

He put his two fingers against the person's nose.

He stood up and said to the others.

"He still has a shallow breath. Fun li apply healing condiments on his wounds. Kongwen, continue surveying the surroundings. Zaike carry him along."

After giving instructions, he turned his back towards them and said, "We should try our best to keep him alive. His meridians are destroyed, and his body has all types of injuries caused by weapons."

"This shows a tricky situation because, based on his clothing, he is a mortal reliance sect disciple, which is part of the righteous sect, and for a disciple of the righteous sect to be attacked, it can only be the works of the evil Sect and that makes things dangerous."

They all nodded with serious expressions.

After applying a healing condiment, Zaike threw the unconscious mortal reliance sect disciple over his head and into his back carefully and carried him to where their tent was.

After arriving at the location of their tent. Zeron jumped down from the tree branch he was on.

He looked at them, and the new addition Zaike placed on a soft grass and said, "What happened?"

Rexi replied, "Things have gotten serious; there is a suspected threat of an evil Sect member."

"Evil sect?!" Zeron exclaimed.

He was shocked by what Rexi said because the Evil sect is a venomous bunch that comprises all evil sects in the Sundai region.

They are in direct opposition with the righteous sect, which comprises all good sects in the Sundai region.

The evil Sect members and disciples were not supposed to be in the Wyrm mountain range outer boundary because of the close proximity to the Sword River association.

Rexi looked at the moon with his hands folded behind his back and said, "The righteous sect has suppressed the evil Sect for fifty years now, and I hope it remains the same."

I was—"

Cough.. cough.

He was interrupted by a loud coughing. He looked towards the source and saw that it was the unconscious mortal reliance sect disciple who had awoken and was coughing out blood heavily.

After coughing for a minute and heaving a deep breath. The disciple wearingly looked at the people surrounding him, recognizing their sect uniform, he heaved a sigh of relief.

Rexi wanted to say something but was interrupted again.

The mortal reliance sect disciple said, "I don't have much time to live, so I will be brief."

He smiled wearingly and sadly then continued.

"I took the sect mission on investigating the disappearance of mortal in the outermost boundary of the Wyrm mountain range. I was asked to eliminate the threat if it was as a result of the hunting of an awakened beast which might have gone too close to the exit of the Wyrm mountain range."

"The theory that it was caused by an awakened beast was rejected by me when I did not discover any leftover of the bodies such as blood, bones, or any remains."

"I also thought it might be a large awakened beast which swallowed them but there was no sign of any demonic presence where they disappeared."

"After fruitlessly searching for days, I decided to disguise myself as a mortal."

Cough.. cough..

He started coughing and heaving in deep breaths. Rexi appeared at his back and tapped his back three times with his fingers.

The mortal reliance sect disciple spit out congealed blood and said weakly, "Thank you."

He continued with his story

"It worked out. I found out the reason for their disappearance. It was caused by the evil Sect."

"They kidnap mortals who came to search for herbs and hunt wild beasts in the outermost boundaries and take them deeper into the outer boundary, into an enclosed cave which contained complicated inscription where they are killed and their blood sucked into the inscription."

"I attacked the evil Sect members there and killed them, but I was severely injured by a disciple of Red Villa, a powerful clan-based evil sect."

"The disciple was in the qi condensation stage. I narrowly and luckily escaped. Chased down, I fought for my life and became as you see me now. Critically injured and left to death."

The mortal reliance sect disciple said mockingly as he finished talking.

Everyone had a solemn expression as they listened to him finish talking.
