Chapter 28 - Depths of Tartarus [3]

My heart starts to beat unsteadily from the anticipation of what's to come.

What could be in this room that would make Yren ecstatic enough to show me?

I discreetly let out a small scoff as I follow behind the old guardian. A small part of me does hope he shows me something interesting.

Without a moment's hesitation, he spins excitedly on his heel while standing right next to a massive sealed door. I touch the wood's surface and feel the enormous power used to enhance this entrance's security.

The first thing that draws my eyes is where his hands are currently placed.

Yren's fingers rest against an enormous bronze doorknob that has strange runic inscriptions on it.

With effortless and swift action, he begins to do a series of strange hand movements with the other hand. The aged being in front of me mumbles out a long incantation while he starts projecting his magic onto the lock.

The low tones of his voice start to fill the hallways. It's somewhat akin to what we know as a Gregorian chant.

Amidst the comforting drones of Yren's voice, the complex mechanism from within the lock begins to shift, turn, and click inside. I close my eyes and start smiling to myself.

I am privy to seeing everything firsthand and up close if I wish to do so. All I need to do is to concentrate all my senses, and a distinct image should appear inside my head. It's almost just as clearly defined as seeing the mechanism unlock, right before my very eyes.

Now, I have a full view of the inner workings of the lock.

They're lucky they didn't have to imprison someone like me, or I would have used my abilities—just like I am now to escape captivity.

Even if I can't see it like this, I could still figure out which of these parts I should move and how much, just using my sense of hearing.

I can also tell sounds from one another while using my telekinetic ability to move such delicate parts in the right order. It'll come in pretty handy if I'll ever get locked up in prison similar to this.

Unfortunately, though, not everyone will have such an astounding ability to do this in all the right sequence.

After all, if you make one mistake—the entire thing will reset itself and alert the 'authorities', quite like setting off a magical tripwire.

With a smug impression, not that there's anyone around me that I'm trying to impress, since the only other person with me is STILL sleeping—I stare at the tiny button.

This very button happens to be one of the traps that would set off the alarm if you move the wrong part.

It's hidden underneath layers upon layers within a very intricate system. If the lock picker happens to trigger it accidentally—they're dead meat. I am sure I am one of the only few who can not only see but even decipher the entire mechanical system with this degree of clarity.

A click and a loud clanking metal sound indicate the end of the incantation. He holds onto the doorknob, stops, and then turns to me with a gleeful expression plastered on his face.

"I present to you, this room, which is one of the pride of Tartarus. I welcome you to the previously occupied cell of the Titans!" Yren says with great pride as he launches into some introduction.

Uhh... is... that all?

The sound of me slapping my own forehead echoes throughout the hallway—a sigh leaks from my lips out of exasperation.

All this while, I was wondering what the heck he's so excited about.

Feeling a slight chance of getting a mild headache, I rub my temples slowly.

I've been meeting too many oddballs as of late. Actually, I may even need a long break after I'm done with this last task.

Hmph. Well, this works out anyway. I'm here to slay the parasitic hellworm the Titans have left after all.

He starts twisting the handle to the right without further delay, then pushes the door open with no difficulty whatsoever. I have to admit, though, that the sight of such a massive door being made open by someone that's less than fifty to seventy times its height is quite amusing. Mostly because it's definitely not something I can see every day—it's almost comical!

Anyway, I remember the Fates telling me that this 'creature has come to life, and they're afraid it'd sow chaos if it ever escapes from hell. From the gist of what they said, it doesn't seem like this only just recently happened.

Since it's been some time, it wouldn't hurt to take some precautions.

Earlier, while Yren took me around everywhere, I've made sure to check every single jail cell properly.

For all we know, it could have somehow wandered in or ended up someplace else other than the area where the Titans were held captive.

I know that this cell is especially heavily guarded and tough to escape from.

With one of the most apparent proofs, the lock mechanism, I've witnessed Yren releasing the spell earlier—but I don't know what powers this creature has.

The security system put in place, and Zeus may be mighty, but it's not the first time some being in this world has counter type powers that's effective towards certain groups or individuals.

Plus, the most important thing is that they did not take this creature into account. So nothing has been set up that's specifically meant to keep it within these walls.

Thankfully, however, I've not sensed anything unusual in any of the other rooms.

Anyway, I'm just hoping that it wouldn't be anywhere else, especially with the fact that this is the place where the Titans used to be held captive.

I look around, curious about the type of place they were trapped in for that long.

So what did he say again? This is the 'highlight' of the entire prison, eh? Hmm...

I hope that means that my search for this monster better reaches the end of it soon. I'm genuinely hoping that this is the last place for me to look through, and I'll somehow find it as soon as we go through these doors.

This is mostly due to the fact that I'd really rather not keep looking for it anymore. I'm rather sick of going from one place to another, only to find it's not even in there. Otherwise, this is proving to be more of a massive pain in the ass than I initially thought.

I murmur a short plea in my heart as we begin to walk through the dim doorway that housed the most notoriously violent beings, called the Titans.
