Since Red got his hands full on his end, he couldn't cover everyone even though he had the speed to do so. That's why, when he heard Lily shout Short's name, he knew it was too late.
But they didn't have time to mourn. the third phase of their trial was just starting.
"Everyone ready!" Red announced.
Five seconds remaining until stairs retraction...

A single loud clang was heard as the stairs finally came into view below them. At that point, it was a free-for-all for everyone as they began their descent. But even after all that, there was no chaos amongst the workers since they constantly helped each other as per Red's orders. They were working like one unit, covering each other's weaknesses. As mentioned before, there was nothing quite like it in the history of Runners Survivors.
