Jacob's POV
I stare out the window into the woods. The moon is bright tonight but I still can not see my mother. She'd been in the woods for a while now. My breath fogged up the window again so I wiped it off, again. Aiden rolled over, Lay down kid your mom is fine, he said sounding annoyed. I sigh and watched a bit longer but after a while I gave in and lie down. I know she's fine, I say. We aren't scared of you. My mom has dealt with way worse people than you. Oh yeah, Aiden said with a smirk. Who has she dealt with? He asked. She never said I couldn't tell anybody it just felt wrong to tell him and I didn't know what to say so I stayed quiet. Levi isn't going to hurt her, he wants you both to stay.
I smiled into the dark, does he like her like you like Libby? I asked. What! Why would you ask that. I could tell I'd surprised him. Levi didn't care and my mom had other things to worry about but I noticed how Aiden was always watching Libby just like Levi watches my mom when she isn't paying attention. I have eyes I told him it's not hard to see when I'm around you all the time.
What else do you see? Aiden asked. That man Caleb hates you, Lizzy says it is because you could be a monster someday. The lady Johanna watches my mom a lot, more than she should be. Libby knows you watch her.
How do you know that? Aiden asked. I sighed again, I already told you I have eyes. Are you going to tell her when we are on this trip? I ask him. This is not a trip it's a supply run and No, I'm not going to tell her and neither are you. I snickered quietly we don't need to tell her she already knows I just was wondering if you were going to do anything about it. How old are you kid? He asked me. I'm old enough, plus my mom told me all kinds of things that she said are not for children but since the world ended she said I could know early. Well, aren't you lucky. Aiden scoffed.
Suddenly Aiden shot up and looked around. I sat up slowly and peeked out the window. I wanted to ask what it was but I kept quiet. Some things can hear better than you might think.
It's Levi and your mom, Aiden whispered as he lay back down. I looked out and waited I knew they would be coming soon if Aiden said so. Finally I watched them come from the woods. My mother walked a couple feet in front, Levi followed her always watching. When they got to the front of the truck Levi walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her, she turned into him and they leaned against the truck talking. I never saw Levi hurt her not like the men who found us at the liquor store. He was always touching her though and it made me feel scared for her after what happened I couldn't touch her for weeks without her flinching.
They talked a lot I would hear them at night for hours. Mom was interested in the ferals, she wanted to know everything about them and about Levi and Aiden. He told her about everything that had been going on since the News reports ended and what it was like for them after they were bit. Aiden and Levi were strong and fast like super hero's just scarier, people said they could go feral. She never ran out of questions and I think he just likes to hear her talk. I ducked down lower as my mom started walking towards the back of the truck. Levi reached out and took her hand, she stopped and looked that she said something I couldn't make out. Then she was moving towards the back again so I lay down quickly and closed my eyes. I always pretended to be asleep when she came to bed even though I never was. Aiden never said anything even though he was always awake. I don't know if he pretended or if he was just glad I would finally be able to sleep. She climbed in and shut the door quietly, when she lay down beside me and wrapped her arm around her I instantly felt sleep approach me.
Jacob Jacob! I could hear my mom and feel her shaking me but I couldn't open my eyes yet. Jacob! She said again. This time I sat up and opened my eyes giving her a cold dead stare, she smiled at me. It's time to go she said as she crawled backwards and slipped out of the truck. She waited there for me in case I tried to go back to sleep. Since we had started sleeping In the truck with the brothers I slept so much it was like heaven. We barely slept on the road and even when you did you were filled with anxiety then anxiety again when you woke up it was like never really sleeping. I sighed and climbed out after her, she waited as I did my morning routine although it was still dark so really I was just fumbling around. Our camp had been completely packed up. Levi probably did it since I never heard him get in last night. Aiden followed us out and around to the back. Where Levi was waiting for us. Libby, Jamie, Danny and Trevor were already there.
I stood in front of my mom, she blocked the wind from me. Everyone was bundled up in coats hats scarfs and gloves and still shivering in the cold morning air. Levi was staring around the circle at us all with an emotionless look on his face. When Aiden reached the rest of us Levi started talking. Danny, Trevor and Libby your riding with Aiden. Jaimie, Rylee and Jacob are coming with me. It's going to take about five days to reach our scavenging ground. Aiden and I will go as far as we can each day. Depending on when we get there we'll scavenge that day or start the next morning. We have planned stops so use them wisely. Trevor is in charge of rations so you can see him every day for your cut. We've got a lot of land to travel so let's get going.
Levi and Aiden just walked off and the rest of us followed them to the trucks and climbed in. Mom sat by Levi and I climbed over the seat into the small backseat. It was more like a bench with a cushion, I was happy with that though. I was able to stretch out more. Jaimie climbed In last and we headed out. I fell back to sleep within the first mile.
