English class was as boring as ever and I couldn't wait for it to be over. "All right class, get out your Hamlet books and turn to act 2." The teacher said. We all obeyed but I however did not bother to listen as she began to read the boring story.
I thought to myself, "This book is so stupid and boring. Can we read something more interesting like, Murder in Manhattan by Mary Higgins. I mean seriously, this book is as fascinating as a slug, which aren't fascinating at all." I sighed quietly and looked out the nearby windows.
------
After English class was lunch. I was about to go sit alone at my table when the boy in my class, the one with pitch black hair and purple eyes, grabbed my hand and brought me to his table where his sister was. "My name is Duskwing and this is my sister Dawnstar." He said.
Upon hearing their names, I immediately became suspicious. "You two aren't human if those are your names." I narrowed my eyes and the area around me became ten degrees colder.
Dawnstar stood up and said, "Your right, we aren't human. We're like you, we're dragons." Duskwing backed away from me slightly because of how much colder it got near me.
"Like me? Your hair is black, mine is white, last I checked Nightwings are the only black dragons. Plus I'm an Icewing. Have you seen my spike-covered tail?" I snapped, the floor below me is slowly being covered with ice.
Duskwing looked at me and said, "Icefang, please calm down. Yes we may be Nightwings but that doesn't mean that we're different than you. Our parents died a year after I was born and we were put up for adoption. We now live with this kind human lady who takes good care of us. Plus she's absolutely in love with dragons, myths, and magic."
I looked away and said, "Humans don't have the capacity to be kind, they are only ever mean and cruel." The whole cafeteria was beginning to freeze over. The angrier I got the colder it became.
Dawnstar pulled me close to her and my powers vanished for only a split second before returning. I pushed away from her, my features were becoming more and more dragon by the second. So I ran off into the halls, and locked myself in the girls bathroom.
------
I was breathing heavily and in a lot of pain as I transformed. My scales were as white as snow. I shook my head and the spikes on my head and along my back clinked together like icicles. I curled up, terrified that someone might see me and freak out, when I heard someone knock on the door. I lifted my head and listened as the person on the other side said, "Icefang, come on, I know you're in there. Please talk to me." It's Duskwing. I didn't bother to answer but somehow, knowing that he was near calmed me down. It was as if he had me trapped in some sort of spell.
My heart was racing and I cried out as I suddenly transformed back to my somewhat human form. I fell to the floor, curled up in a ball as pain engulfed my limbs. I waited for it to stop before standing and opening the door, as soon I did I fell into Duskwing's arms, completely exhausted. "Wh-what d-did y-your s-sister do to m-me?" I stuttered, crying tears of ice.
Duskwing brushed my hair out of my hazel eyes and said, "She cast a spell on herself to remove any dragons powers when in close proximity to her. Seems that your powers are too strong for even her animus magic to take away, even if it's temporary."
I blinked up at him and whispered, "She's an animus?" I had stopped crying but I was still exhausted.
Duskwing nodded and said, "Although it seems that when you come into contact with an animus you transform into your dragon form."
I nestled against him without a second thought and fell asleep, right there, in his warm arms.
------
I woke up in the nurse's office, Duskwing was nowhere to be found. I blinked and sat up. The nurse came running over. "Oh good! You're awake! Are you feeling better?" She said, clearly worried out of her mind about me.
I nodded slowly and pulled an icicle out of my hair, a side effect of my transformation from a dragon back to that of a semi-human. I sighed and threw it into the sink that was about only a foot away. "I'm fine." I said, a deep rumble in my throat as I tried to keep my anger from being expressed in my words.
The nurse excitedly clapped and said, "Good! Good! I'm Carrie Ann! As you can see I'm a nurse here at Vyrania, I'm also the woman who adopted Duskwing and Dawnstar!" I immediately wanted out, I needed to escape. I swung my feet over the side of the bed and stood up, ignoring the spots in my eyes as I was a bit dizzy. "Woah woah woah! Calm down! You're still dizzy! Please lay back down." She exclaimed, worried about my well-being.
I looked at Carrie and snapped, "Leave me alone and stop worrying about me! I'm not one of your stupid pets!" The windows froze over with ice and shattered. I jumped out the window and ran. I kept running and running until I reached my home. I unlocked the door and ran inside, locking it behind me. I collapsed on the hardwood floor of the entrance hall and cried. "I'm not going back to school tomorrow... I can't stand being bullied by those cruel humans." I muttered. I slowly stood up and went to my room where I laid down on my bed and fell asleep, entering an ice cold sleep of darkness. I did not dream at all.
------
I woke up in the middle of the night to someone knocking on my window lightly. I sat up and saw Duskwing and Dawnstar. I got up and closed my curtains, ignoring them, but the knocking got louder so I opened the curtains and then I opened the window. "What do you want?!" I snapped.
Duskwing looked at me and said, "We want to help you learn how to trust humans and we want to help you control your powers." That's when I knew that they wouldn't ever leave me alone, no matter how much I asked.
