Chereads / The Visitor / Chapter 2 - The Girl Next Door

Chapter 2 - The Girl Next Door

It was an unusually quiet night in Harrisburg. Normally, sounds of traffic on Main Street could be heard from Jason's house, but there were no signs of any movement at all. The sidewalks were deserted, and there was no activity coming from any of the houses. Even the dogs were silenced by the strange mood of the night. For a minute, Jason thought there must have been some kind of emergency, and he had been forgotten by all of his friends and family. Then, he was startled by an eerie sound coming from behind the massive privacy fence that separated his house from the Finn property.

No one ever really went over there since there were warning signs posted everywhere. The word in town was that the property was declared hazardous, but nothing official had been announced. Even so, it was a sound that Jason could not ignore. He carried the tallest ladder from the garage and placed it against the brick fence. Just as he reached the top and was about to place his right foot on the top of the ledge, . . .

He places his foot onto the ledge and looks up. There is a girl, staring him in the face. Startled, he leans backward, almost falling off the edge. The girl catches him, and he steadies himself.

"Hi there." She says, her long black hair flowing with the gentle breeze.

"Hi." He manages to say, somewhat breathless from being startled.

"Sorry if I scared you. I tend to do that sometimes." She lightly blushes, hiding her face behind a red scarf. She glances into my eyes and then looks away, her eyes are the color of hazelnuts.

"It's okay, I was just startled." He looks away as well, and looks into the yard. There isn't much there, a big oak tree in the yard, and a walkway leading up to the house. "So, what are you doing up here?" He asks, breaking the awkward silence between them.

She raises her eyebrow, giving him a questioning look. "I could ask you the same question, you're trespassing on our property."

"Well, there was this sound that I heard. I can't explain what it was, but I felt drawn to it, so I thought I should investigate."

She pauses for a second. "A sound huh? I didn't hear anything."

He nods. "Well, I don't hear it anymore, so, I guess I should get going." He starts to go back to the ladder, when the sound starts playing again, only this time, louder.

It kinda sounds like a woman singing something.

"There it is again." He says, looking around for the source. Without thinking, he jumps down from the fence and starts running towards the house.

"Hey! Where are you going?" She yells from behind.

He ignores her, and runs up the steps to the house. When he reaches the door he is stopped by the same girl.

"What are you doing?" She grabs his wrist, pulling him back.

"How did you catch up so fast?"

"I'm a really fast runner. What are you doing?"

"The sound, it's coming from inside the house."

"You can't go in there." She says, her grip getting tighter.

Jason tries to pull away from her but it's no use. When he looks up at the girl, he notices tears falling from her eyes. But instead of normal tears, hers are black. "Your eyes, they're-" Unable to finish the sentence, he watches as her eyes slowly pop out from their sockets, and drop to the ground at their feet.

"They do that sometimes. They always grow back though." Without any effort needed, she throws him through the door, knocking it off its hinges.

Winded, he stands up, and runs into a dark room, hoping he can hide from her. Almost as soon as he enters the room, he slips in some sort of warm liquid. Once his eyes adjust from the light coming in from the door, he can see that it's from the Finn family.

They are all lying on the floor, in their own pools of blood. Their throats completely shredded, like an animal ripped them out.

"I told you not to come in here." She looms in the doorway.

Before he can get a chance to run, she pins him on his back. "Looks like I get to kill you, just like I killed them."

She lifts his chin, revealing his unprotected flesh. She inches closer, baring her sharp, white teeth.

Suddenly there is the sound of sirens outside the door. She turns and looks it the window, the red and blue lights flashing in her eyes.

In a flash, she disappears into the night.

Jason gets up and runs out the door, jumping into his mother's arms.

She looks down at the ground, embarrassed to tell her father what happened. "I missed one." She said quietly.

He pats her on the head. "Don't worry, you'll get better, with time and practice. That's how I got so good at it." He kisses her on the forehead and takes her hand. "Let's go home, mom is waiting." They walk into the woods, and disappear.
