The strong morning sun reflected in the puddles of water around the city, the sound of birds mixing with that of vehicles traveling through the wide and spacious streets. Some people who preferred to exercise rode their bikes on the bike path, there at least they could enjoy the cool morning breeze while hiding from the sun thanks to the shade of the large green trees.
Most people hurriedly walked along the road, after all, everyone had their responsibilities to deal with daily, and most did not have the benefit of walking calmly to enjoy the beautiful scenery around them.
From time to time it was possible to see an adult looking irritated at the younger ones who were playing in the middle of the sidewalk hindering their passage, or looking at the lazy students who were walking at the same speed as a slug.
However, there were always some things that were capable of attracting everyone's attention. In that case, it was the sound of the winds when a girl with shiny energy wings sprouting from her back flew over their heads.
One of the children pointed at the girl and exclaimed with a smile on his face. "Did you see!? It was a veteran of the military academy! "
"WOW!" A girl looked at the trail of energy that was left behind with stars in her eyes.
The elders just looked proudly at the girl who flew by. Even though they didn't dare to fight on the front lines, they had a lot of respect for those who dedicated their lives to working on such a risky and honorable task.
The girl who flew quickly soon landed at the entrance to a large subway station. Her green eyes, blond hair, and bright white skin were enough to attract the attention of most other male students who passed through the area, but what really drew attention was her olive green and white uniform, that was the symbol from the military academy, more specifically from the wizard course.
The station had 5 different platforms, each of which led to one of the school districts of the city, for security reasons, the entire area around the schools was strictly forbidden, anyone who wanted to access a school physically would have to use one of the trains and would need an access card, as well as an identity allowed to use those trains.
She walked for a while and then entered platform 1. As it was half an hour before the train arrived the place was still relatively empty, however, after looking around for a while her eyes lit up and she started walking.
Sitting on a bench were two people, one of whom was a girl with short blue hair and brown eyes. Beside her was a bald, dark-skinned boy wearing headphones.
"Good morning guys!" She screamed with a smile on her face as she waved her hands.
The two who were seated turned to her and smiled when they saw her.
"Good morning, Keira." The blue-haired girl replied.
"You arrived very late today, Keira, you'll have to pay for our lunch!" The bald boy laughed mischievously while his face had the villainous expression of someone who seemed to have just successfully executed a diabolical plan.
Keira sighed, she shook her head and pouted. "Mnn, you cheated, you usually always arrive later than me!"
The girl and the boy looked at each other and started laughing.
Keira sat next to the girl and said.
"Gwen, Aidan, did you hear that today we are going to have special training?" Seeing the expression of confusion on their faces, she sighed a little annoyed and continued. "They are saying on our class group on the ultralink that the teachers are going to put us on a field activity with the students of the warriors' course..."
"What!?" Aidan stood up and looked at her with a frown. "They want us to work with those barbarians!? Impossible!"
Gwen nodded at his words and responded with determination.
"I refuse to work with those bastards! You must have heard the rumors right? It won't work! "
Keira reluctantly agreed with them, normally the situation would be different, that kind of thing has not happened in the other years, but since that guy appeared in their class, the students of the warriors' course have surpassed their average in theoretical and practical tests. For the first time in more than 150 years, the wizard's course performs worse than the warriors' and all because of a single person.
Since that happened, the students of the warriors' course became arrogant and started to argue with the students of the wizarding course, even some fights happened occasionally. This made both courses create an unhealthy type of rivalry.
"Do you know anything about that guy?" Keira asked as she looked at them.
Aidan just shook his head and shrugged.
Gwen however nodded and said.
"I've heard some things, as far as I know, he's not the most handsome guy in the warriors' course, some would even say that he's very ... normal. He has brown hair and brown eyes, and his most obvious feature is that he is practically a block of antisocial ice. They say the reason for being transferred to our school unit is that at his other school, some bullies tried to mess with him, it is said that they all ended up in the hospital with serious injuries, they stayed in a hospital bed for almost 1 month, and when they heard his name they even looked like scared little girls! "
Keira looked at Gwen strangely after hearing the end of the sentence. Noticing her friend's look, she coughed and said. "I mean, they looked like scared little boys!"
"Hey!?" Aidan looked at her a little offended.
Keira just laughed seeing the two's interaction.
"If I'm not mistaken, his name is Ethan Forgrave, right?"
Gwen nodded.
At that moment they stopped and started to think about what kind of person this guy would be, in their mind, he was like a kind of mafia leader who walked around with a psychopath look and a cold smile that would make anyone tremble with fear...
Half an hour later the once empty platform was now full of students. Among them it was possible to see 3 different groups, the first was the students of the warriors' course with their olive green and red uniforms, the second was the students of the wizards' course, the last was the students of the technological course with olive green and gray uniform.
At that moment looking south, you could see the train approaching. Seeing this, Keira and her friends got up and went to the departure area.
The train was divided into several compartments, each of which had enough space for 4 people, as for the journey, it would take almost 9 hours, the seats could be transformed into beds, also, there was a buffet where students could eat for free.
Keira and the others ended up sitting in an empty compartment near the driver's cab.
Because of the distance between the school and the city, students usually only left school during the holidays, fortunately for them, the school had dormitories. Each free room was shared between two people, but for those who could afford it, it was possible to purchase a room for themselves.
Soon a voice sounded warning that the train was about to leave, and after a few minutes, it left the platform and started to cross the green landscape filled with trees and pastures.
They were about to chat when someone opened the compartment door. He was a 175 cm tall boy with brown hair and eyes and a face that you would never notice in a crowd. He looked around and realizing that there were only 3 people he said.
"Can I stay here? The other compartments are full." His voice and the expression on his face seemed somewhat empty. It was almost like listening to an artificial intelligence talking.
"Uh?" Gwen swallowed when she saw the boy.
Aidan and Keira, however, just nodded without caring much about his presence.
Having received permission he nodded and went in, but before they had a chance to say anything, he went up the ladder and lay down on the bed above the seat. Seeing this, they decided that it would be better to leave the boy alone.
"Hey, do you know where you're going in 6 months?" Aidan asked them both.
"What do you mean?" Keira asked a little confused.
"Did you forgot?" Gwen shook her head and gave her a disapproving look. "This is our last year at the academy, after that we will be transferred to one of the military squads. I've been thinking about auditioning for Madame Zuri's squad, she only accepts women and only works with wizards like us, I think it's my best opportunity to show my skills in the army!"
Aidan nodded, listening to Gwen's words.
"I was thinking about auditioning for the Pathfinders." Seeing how shocked Gwen and Keira looked at him, he continued. "Don't look at me like that, you know that their mission is important, they are not the biggest military squad for no reason, who knows when we will have to leave the sanctuary? The bestial army advances more and more each decade, it has only been 5 years since the Beakward tragedy. We are strong, but the beasts are even stronger."
"Are you crazy, this is practically a suicide, do you think it is easier to explore those intergalactic portals instead of protecting what is left of our civilization?" Keira looked at him confused, she couldn't understand why he would throw his life away like that.
But before he could answer the indifferent voice of the boy lying on the bed sounded.
"He's right, the Pathfinders are humanity's only hope, as a species, we have a limit on how strong we can get, the exploration of the portals is our opportunity to find new methods of strengthening ourselves and creating possible settlements to guarantee the continuation of our race. It doesn't matter if you want to do something good for the world or if you are only there for selfish reasons, the Pathfinders squad is the place for those who want power and even fame."
Gwen snorted hearing his words and said.
"Humph! What could you understand about power, you are just another barbarian of the warriors' course. But maybe this is a common thread among men, isn't it? The lack of intelligence that drives them to make suicidal decisions." She looked at the boy lying viciously, it was almost as if lightning was threatening to jump out of her eyes and grill him alive.
The boy turned and looked at her, his face once blank, now had a violent air about it, almost like a tiger that was preparing to strike.
Seeing the atmosphere between the two, Keira smiled awkwardly and said.
"Please guys, we are not going to fight over something so trivial right? We don't need to fight over something like this."
The boy turned to the wall and said. "Whatever, I may not even know you or know your reasons for being here, but at a time like ours, anyone who doesn't choose to join the Pathfinders is just wasting their time."
Hearing this, Gwen stood up and pointed at him, her face red and contorted, Aidan could have sworn he saw smoke coming out of her head. "Are you kidding me? Do you want to fight?"
Unfortunately for her, the boy just ignored her.
Aidan and Keira had to hold her back so she wouldn't cast any dangerous spells on the train.
They went back to their seats and looked at each other a little tired, but after thinking for a while it was expected that the situation would develop like this, after all, he was a student of the warriors' course.
The rest of the trip was relatively smooth, the boy didn't speak any other word the entire trip and the others just talked casually about various mundane everyday matters.
When the train arrived at the station, they got off and started walking towards the entrance to the school's territory. You couldn't see the school from there because of the big trees on the way, they would still have to walk for another 10 minutes to get there.
However, when they were about to start walking they noticed something strange. All the students from the warriors' course seemed to look at the boy who shared the compartment with them as if they had stars in their eyes.
At that moment a realization struck Keira. 'Don't tell me that he is...!? Brown hair and eyes, a common face and antisocial personality...'
"Hey, do you think he's that guy?" Aidan whispered to them.
Gwen and Keira just looked at each other, both could see the shock in the other's eyes. Sighing Keira replied.
"Probably he is ... Let's put that aside for now." She shrugged and started walking towards the school.
Seeing this, Gwen and Aidan nodded and followed.
