Chereads / Emaline Goode: The Raven of Ilvermorny / Chapter 14 - Chapter 13 - Starwatcher

Chapter 14 - Chapter 13 - Starwatcher

Chicago, Illinois. 4 days later...

Emaline had a fantastic weekend with her family. She got the chance to see her brother play Quidditch with his team in Astoria. They went on a hike to Mount Rainier National Park, she attempted to find a book on Nicolas Flamel by Hermione's request at her favorite bookstore. Nothing came up. She showed Tulip the famed Shanghai Tunnels and she got all of her homework done in no time at all. But hers and Tulip's vacation went as fast as it began. Emaline let Professor McGonagall know that she and Tulip will be coming back to Hogwarts on Monday morning. After 4 days of being with family, Emaline and Tulip returned the portal in Chicago with Allison, who was heading back to Ilvermorny. It was 1 in the morning. Emaline and Tulip had to be at school in 3 hours, so they put on their Ravenclaw robes and uniforms. "Ms. Goode? Ms. Karasu?" said Pat, the house-elf, "The portal is ready. We're waiting for you."

"Are you coming back home for Christmas, Lil' sis?" said Allison.

"I probably won't. I'll miss you, Allie." She gave her big sister a big hug. "I love you."

"Tulip, it was nice to meet you."

"Same here." she shook Allie's hand.

They began walking towards the portal, ending up back in the cellar at Honeyduke's Sweets Shop. It was pitch black in the tunnel.

"Lumos.," said Emaline, as she brought out her wand. The light was enough to illuminate the tunnel. They began walking.

"Mr. Flume?" said Tulip. "We're back from vacation. Are you here?" Suddenly, a pair of footsteps walked down the flight of stairs.

"Welcome back, girls! My wife and I just woke up and we're getting ready for the workday.," said Mr. Flume. "I trust you had a splendid vacation?"

"We did, sir. Thank you." said Emaline, "It felt great to spend some time at home."

"Wonderful!" he said, "Anyway, Hagrid is on his way to come and pick you up. I have some more American goodies in stock, just for you, Ms. Goode. You actually came at a good time. The store isn't even open yet."

He escorted Tulip and Emaline up the stairs into the shop, which was closed. While they were waiting for Hagrid to come and get them, the girls took a look around and Emaline restocked on all of her favorite American candies, most of which she ate on the trip back to Oregon with her sister and Tulip and she wanted to share a few with her friends tonight. Mrs. Flume was nice enough to bring them both some coffee while they were browsing. After paying for all their sweets, they started walking back towards the castle, up until Hagrid showed up. "Hi, Hagrid.", they both said.

"Good morning ladies! I was just on me way to get you." he said cheerfully, "Had a great vacation?"

"Yes. Tulip enjoyed herself most of all. I got all of my homework done."

"That's good. School will be starting in an hour an' a half. I'll bring yer luggage up ta the Ravenclaw Common Room and you head down to the Great Hall and get some breakfast in."

As they approached the Great Hall, Hagrid went ahead to drop off their luggage at the Ravenclaw Common Room. It was empty, but there were some students already pouring into the Great Hall for breakfast. Emaline and Tulip returned to the Ravenclaw table and took a seat. "Whoo!" Emaline exclaimed, "I'm so tired!"

"Me too." Tulip replied, "It's good to be back at Hogwarts. Thanks for taking me with you. It's the most fun I've had in a while. And thanks for the Boom Boom Balls. These will come in handy for my pranks."

"You like pranks?" Emaline asked

"Oh, yeah. I think the best prank of my career was at that time when I Dungbombed the Owlery." Emaline snickered, "I think these Boom Boom Balls are gonna work great for me." She opened one of them up from their wrappers and threw it into the air to see what would happen and it hit the ground. On impact, it exploded, releasing a thick cloud of smoke. Tulip sniffed the smoke. "Mmm! What is that?"

"It's cocoa powder." Emaline explained, "Those things are great to make a quick getaway or play a playful prank."

"Cool!" Tulip said excitedly. As they continued eating, more students began streaming into the Great Hall. Tulip was so tired from the trip, that she immediately fell asleep on Emaline's shoulder. Everyone looked like they were very happy to see her again. But everyone in Ravenclaw was the happiest. They were giving her hugs, handshakes, and kisses as they came to the table. "Welcome back, Emaline! We missed you!" a girl said, who was walking with Cho. "Good to see you, Lisa."

Then, Hermione walked over from where Harry and Ron were sitting at the Ravenclaw table and sat down in front of her. "Hi, Emaline." she greeted, "Welcome back."

"Hi, Hermione."

"Welcome back! So, did you find anything on Nicolas Flamel for us?"

"No, I checked the Wizarding section at Powell's Bookstore over in Portland and I didn't find anything. I'm sorry."

"It's okay. I think might I have a lead but the only problem is it's in the Restricted Section in the library. Have a good day." She got up and returned to the Gryffindor table. Emaline continued eating her breakfast, making a plate of steak and eggs, and a cup of coffee. Nearby, she saw Draco Malfloy with his friends harassing Harry and Ron. "Watch this:" she said to her friends. She opened up and threw a Boom Boom Ball with great accuracy across the room and it exploded in Malfloy's face. Everyone at the Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw table was roaring with laughter. Some Slytherins were laughing as well. Harry looked back at Emaline and smiled at her. She gave him a thumbs up. "Nice shot!" Mandy Brocklehurst said. Malfloy was completely covered in chocolate powder. "Thank you, Mandy," she replied.

After breakfast, Emaline had Transfiguration class first to bring back her homework from her trip and Tulip returned to the Ravenclaw Common Room to get some rest (it was her free period so she had the morning off). She then had Potions class, where they were to begin brewing a potion called the Elixir To Induce Euphoria. She brought out her homework for Snape to collect sat next to her new partner, a Gryffindor named Julia, who was supposed to be one of the top Potions O.W.L.S in her house. As everyone was talking, Snape got up from his desk and began the lesson. "Silence..." he said coldly, "Welcome back, Ms. Goode. I hope you enjoyed your holiday." He then walked over to her, "And I believe you have the homework I gave you?" She picked it up and gave it to Snape. "Thank you, Ms. Goode. I will grade your work by the end of the class and give it to you tomorrow morning. Begin brewing." Everyone went right to work. Emaline put on her reading glasses and began working on her potion. After Potions, she then had Charms class, where they were learning to turn vinegar into wine. On her way to class she ran into her friend Penny Haywood, who gave her a big hug, "Welcome back, Emaline!" she said cheerfully, "We've missed you. Everyone at Hogwarts was longing for your safe return!

"Thanks, Penny.," Emaline said politely, "I missed you, too. I have something for you and your sister. It's from America." She reached into her messenger bag and gave Penny a pair of Snickering Snickerdoodles. "Thank you." Penny said politely, "I'll try one of these later. You have to tell all about your trip back to America." At Care Of Magical Creatures, Professor Kettleburn brought in a Thunderbird for his lesson today. She knew more about it than anyone else in the class today.

After a long and exhausting day, and a huge dinner, Emaline returned to the Ravenclaw Common Room and collapsed onto the bed and decided to take a little nap. Until Professor Flitwick woke her up. "Good evening, Ms. Goode.," he said.

"Good evening, Professor."

"Would you come with me, please?"

"Why?"

"Professor Sinistra would like to see you."Professor Flitwick escorted her into his office and showed her to Professor Sinistra. She was a tall witch, about the same height as Emaline, with dark hair, eyes, and skin. She had a slightly circular face with cheekbones and a prominent, sharp nose. She was probably Emaline's favorite teacher at Hogwarts. "Good evening, Ms. Goode." she greeted, "I would like for you to accompany me to the Astronomy Tower. I have some first years that could use your guidance and wisdom."

"Of course, ma'am." said Emaline, "If you don't mind, I need to grab my notebook." She ran back to her room and grabbed it from her messenger bag. They began walking. "So what's in that notebook, if you don't mind?" she said inquisitively.

"Ever since I got accepted into Ilvermorny, I have been keeping track of everything I see up in the sky every single night in this book. That includes celestial objects such as stars, planets, constellations, galaxies, comets, asteroids, nebulae, and so on. I hope to turn some of the notes I've compiled into a book I'm working on."

"How meticulous!" the professor said surprisingly.

"I know! I'm not sure yet, but think I might want to teach Astronomy at Ilvermorny when I grow up."

"An excellent career choice, Emaline." said Professor Sinistra, "I think if you follow your dreams, you can do anything you set your mind on."

The Astronomy Tower was probably Emaline's favorite part of Hogwarts. She was given special permission to visit it anytime she wanted, but only at night. It was a hard climb up to the top because it was the highest tower in Hogwarts Castle. "Wait here, please." said Professor Sinistra, as they finally reached the top of the Tower, "Ladies and gentlemen, we have a special guest with us tonight. She is our transfer student from Ilvermorny and she knows a lot about Astronomy. Please welcome Ms. Emaline Goode." She walked into the classroom, which was full of first-year students including Harry, Ron, and Hermione, as well as Padma Patil, Lisa Turpin, Sue Li, Anthony Goldstein, Terry Boot, and Mandy Brocklehurst from Ravenclaw. "So what are we learning tonight, Professor?" she asked.

"We are looking at some constellations. I was wondering if you could help some of the students with their star charts. And for your help tonight, I will award you 25 points to Ravenclaw."

"Thank you, Professor." She put on her glasses and began walking around the classroom, sitting down with the first years and helping them point out the different constellations, and then she sat down with Harry. "Thank you for that, by the way.," said Harry.

"For what?" Emaline asked.

"For shutting Malfloy up."

"Oh, you're welcome. He's a bully. I won't tolerate bullies picking on my friends. Or anyone, for that matter. You should see Ilvermorny. They have a zero-tolerance bullying policy."

"But that was awesome, Emaline!" said Hannah Abbott, a Hufflepuff "The way you put Malfloy in his place made us feel really good."

"Yeah! What is that thing you hit Malfloy with, by the way?" Ron asked. She took one out. "They're called 'Boom Boom' Balls. You can eat them as normal but they can be used as a quick escape or as a playful prank. It releases chocolate powder on impact."

"Blimey! I'll take one of them if you don't mind."

"Of course!" she said kindly. She gave everyone one Boom Boom Ball. "Thank you."

After she was finished in the Astronomy Tower, Emaline returned to the Ravenclaw Common Room and went right to sleep. The next day was a very rare day off. A special day when she got to sleep in, went to the Great Hall for breakfast, came back, and not have to worry about studying, and getting up for school, spending most of it in the Common Room, where there was so much to do, and consumed almost every book that was in the library, listened to some Mozart, worked on some of her homework, made and drank some tea, read some of another book she brought from home, took a nap, went down to the Great Hall for lunch, contributed to a puzzle that the kids have been working on for the last couple days, since she left Hogwarts for home for Thanksgiving, and everything else in between, in hopes of not dying from boredom. All in all, Emaline had a fun day off. After it was over, she went down to the Great Hall for dinner and joined her friends.

"So, Emaline." Cho asked, "Did you enjoy your day off?"

"Absolutely.," she replied. "I slept in, read my book, listened to some Mozart, drank some tea, and I think I've consumed almost every book in your library."

"Wow!" said Tulip, "Looks like you had a fun time."

"And I finally plucked up the courage to talk to one of my roommates. She also had the day off."

"Which one?" Penny asked.

"This girl named Margot, who shares D.A.D.A with me. She seems like the perfect stereotypical Ravenclaw. She's really, really smart and elegant-looking and...ethereal."

"That's because she is. I think you should be friends with her." said another one of her roommates named Hazel, "She may seem a little snobby but she's actually really nice. And she's really beautiful. A lot of the first-years in our House look up to her as a role model. Here she is, right now." Margot sat right next to Emaline. She had long silver hair that reached down to her waist, had shimmering gray eyes, wore black nail polish on her fingernails and she was in school attire and carrying a book. She was everything that Penny had described. "Good evening, Emaline.," she said politely. "I'm Margot." She shook her hand. "Hi, Margot."

"I'm glad I got to spend the day with you. I hope we can be friends." she reached her out to Emaline. She smiled at her. "Absolutely." They shook hands.
