If Mares were to use a word to describe the settlement was miserable. While it was big enough to be called a city, it wasn't anywhere near organized enough to be considered so.  Half of the population was half-dead and the other half was roughed up by their environment.

They were in the coastal area, so besides all that awful there was also the strong scent of salty ocean water. This was a detail Mares wouldn't be able to remember, but the scent of the ocean here was much stronger than it usually is on Earth, showing that there were other components in the water.

The only reason no one came up to look for trouble with the trio was that Mares and Grunidori were intimidating enough on their own. The natural pressure the two exhaled kept every possible troublemaker away.
