Fighting in a ship in the open vacuum of space was not an easy task, especially for the crew. They had been trained and were doing well but this said more about their survivability capacities and talent than anything.
As warriors who still did not develop the capacity to fight, they were used to fights with limited directions.
There was just so much movement their enemies could do during a fight and most times they could not just change directions suddenly, go up or down, and so on. Living beings, even warriors, had limitations on their movement until up to a certain level of strength.
Ships did not have that issue, they could change directions and pretty much move however the pilot wanted to, as long as he had enough skills to pull it off.
It makes predicting the enemy movement much harder, especially if the ship is under a good pilot. Thankfully that was Free Star case.
