Chapter 88 - Chapter*Eight: A Maybe

Pryer's POV

__________________________________________________________________________________

I've never been more pissed off in my life.

Firstly Devie decides to come to school with this 'Hay Fang' guy and he decides to test me. Then my dad decided to be a racist toad yesterday in front of Devie. It seems like everything's falling apart.

Devie seems to be giving up on our 'love quest'. Usually if this was any other girl they would stick to me like glue no matter what, and that was the easiest thing. I didn't even have to do any sort of commitment, because they would do it for me.

I grabbed Aurora's waist and pulled her towards me, making her sit on my lap. She giggled and I buried my head onto her shoulder.

"That's nasty."

I looked up to glare at River who sat in the seat across from me at our table. Fia looked at me and rolled his eyes. Noah paid no attention to us, because he was on his phone with some girl, while Leo was reading like the good little boy he was.

"Oh shut up, don't be mad at me that your single." I snapped back at him and he just laughed. "Single? Baby boy your single. I for one am not single. Right Noah?" He smiled and winked at Noah who sat next to him. Noah flicked him in the forehead before laughing at whatever was on his phone.

I glanced over at Devie's table, it's been over a week since I've sat at her table or even have more than a 'Hey' as a conversation with her. She's kinda been avoiding me as well ever since that Hay Fang boy came around. Or maybe she's avoiding me because of what happened with my dad and step mom.

She was laughing and talking with him like they've known each other for years. Maybe they have. Why do I care anyway? "Babe are you alright?"

I was pulled back into my reality when Aurora touched my cheek. Her light brown eyes were filled with worry and it made me feel calm. I should leave her soon I'm getting too attached.

Attachment is bad, a lesson I was taught by none other than my dad. Most of the time he's right.

"I'm perfectly fine." I said as I leaned in to kiss her familiar soft lips. When I part my face with Aurora's my eyes are met with Devie's. She has a look on her face that I can't really make out. She looks disgusted almost.

I ignored my weird gut feeling and placed my chin on her shoulder. For a moment I didn't feel comfortable in my own skin. I just felt out of place. "What up with you and that girl?"

I looked up at Leo who was suddenly interested in my business. His bright blond hair was pushed out of his face while his blue eyes stared me down. "She's avoiding me."

"As she should. She might've gotten the hint that you're mine and mine only." Aurora smiled which for some reason made me kind of annoyed. My eyes averted back Devie's table and I watched as Voyanne, Devie, and that Fang guy leave the cafeteria all together. Devie looked back at me and gave me a half smile before leaving the room.

Without thinking I pushed Aurora off of me and started walking up to Devie. I grabbed her arm and lead her out of the cafeteria and behind some vending machines.

"Pryer what are you doing?" She angrily asked me as I let go of her arm. She looked up at me with those big doe eyes of hers. Her long curly hair layed on her shoulders covering some of the patterns on her T-shirt, maybe her Afro was my most favorite things about her.

"Are you avoiding me?"

"Pryer don't you think this is stupid? Aren't you tired of chasing me around? It's been two weeks. The flowers and candies are sweet, but its not working. So do me a favour and focus on what's in front of you. Like Aurora." She looked at me with annoyance in her eyes as her words stabbed mine.

It's not working?

"I've missed you."

She looked back up at me in surprise. Her eyes were bigger and wider than before. A small shy smile crept on her lips and I could feel my ears getting hot. "I like having you around and I like your smile and your laugh. So please don't drop what we have Devanie." The words in my throat were desperately coming out.

I had no idea what I was doing. I just went for it. I didn't want her to say anything at all. I wanted her to just listen to me.

"What are we then Pryer? What do we have?" She said and the eyes of doubt replaced her surprised ones. My mind quickly scattered to find answers. The anticipation to speak was on the tip of my tongue.

What are we?

"We're a maybe." I said more confidently. She looked at me for a moment before she started giggling at me. When I didn't say anything but watch she looked at me with intenseness in her eyes.

"Wait you're serious?"

"Yes very serious." I said before stepping close to her. She closed her eyes shut, but I ended that wild fairytale of hers by kissing her forehead.

She looked up at me with her doe eyes again and had a confused look."And this time I'll try even harder than before. No one can get in my way." I smirked at her before leaving a stunned Devie standing by the vending machine.

My ears still felt hot and everyone immediately noticed. Aurora had left and she was back at her table sitting with all the other girls I've hooked up with. When I sat down at the table I covered my hands in my face and screamed. I screamed as loud as I possibly could and when I finished I acted like I didn't just scream like an ape.

"The heck was that? Why are you so red?" Noah asked as he leaned forward to get a closer look at my face. "I think Devanie finally let him in." River said and smirked at me.

"What no--"

"Yeah I agree." Noah said."Me too. It's about damn time." Fia said and gave a high five to Noah.

"No--"

"I agree." Leo said and everyone including me looked at him in shock. He looked up from his book confused."Well it was boring around here It's about time something interesting haad happened." He grinned and went back to reading.

"None of that happened. I just needed to talk to her." I sighed and slouched in my seat.

"When you talk to her again can you get her to give me Voya's number?" Fia said and I rolled my eyes at him. Out of boredom I stood up from my seat and began wandering the hallways of the school until the bell for the next class rang.

A class that I also ended up skipping.

Later that day

"You idiot!"

I closed my eyes when I heard him scream at me again. He raised his hand again and smacked the side of my face. I tried not to make any noise when he hit me. I should be used to this by now.

I held my burning red face as I let my eyes fill up with tears. I didn't let them fall down my face as I stood there bearing the unbearable pain.

"Get your life together boy! How many times do you come home and your failing another class! What's your excuse this time? The teacher is not the problem it's you!" My dad yelled before turning around and leaving.

My step mom, who was quietly watching the whole time, rushed over to me."Are you okay? I'll get Heffley--" Before she could turn the opposite direction I grabbed her arm to stop her from moving. She looked up at me with worried eyes before putting her hand on my burning cheek.

"I'm so sorry Pryer. You deserve none of this. I wish I could do something, but I don't--"

"Its okay mom. I'll get you away from here. Somewhere he can't hurt you or even find you. If anything you don't deserve to be imprisoned in this hell hole." I said angrily. She smiled warmly as she looked up at me with her bright blue eyes. Her brown hair was neatly styled and her white

blouse was in perfect condition.

"Thank you." She whispered before pulling me into her comforting arms. I tightly hugged her back and cried silently in her hair.
