Chapter 1 - UNFOLD 1: A CASE GONE WRONG

Booker woke up by the noise of his phone. He looked at the clock at his bedside table and saw that it is still two in the morning. He groaned as he picked up his phone. He saw that his superior, Claud Bennet, is calling him.

"What do you want this early?" He tried not to raise his voice at Claud so he wouldn't wake up the very hot lady on his side.

"Woah, calm down there, boy. I have good news." He heard Claud chuckle on the other side of the line.

"If you are only going to laugh, I'll be hanging up." He was about to end the call but Claud stopped him.

"I know you just finished your current task last week and I know you're tired from having fun with your hottie."

"Get to the point Claud." He said as he gritted his teeth.

"Listen, Book, there is something more about your last task that uncovers many secrets about someone from the higher up." Booker thought for a while as Claud paused. "I won't tell it through phone, Book. They might be listening too. So if you want to know more of it, get your ass down here."

Without a second thought, Booker changed and went to their office. He didn't even bother to wake his girlfriend up. He'll just send her a text in the morning.

While in his car, he dialed Claud's number again. Claud picked up on the second ring.

"Booker, Booker!" Claud said in a hushed tone.

"Hey old man, what's happening? Why are you whispering? What's --" Booker could not continue because he heard a gunshot and panting sounds from the other line.

"Booker, listen. I am going to give you a new task." Claud grunted.

"You will continue your last task and know who's behind the entering of drugs. I've made a memorandum about it for you. I've sent all of the files and footage to your flash drive. Find it in your office."

"Wait, what do you mean? And who else is in the office?" He heard more running and three more gunshots followed by a loud thud and then there was silence. The call was suddenly cut off. Booker picked up speed and came five minutes later. It was the fastest he could go even though only a few cars roam the road.

When he got to the building he saw that it was quiet. He knew that other detectives are currently on the field for their respective cases and the others are in their homes sleeping peacefully. Their superior, Claud, lets everyone home when they have nothing to do but stays inside his office for the whole night so he can study accomplished cases to dig more secrets. But this time, the case Claud dug up took him to the wrong side of life.

Booker thought that maybe the case he had just accomplished is only a little chess piece of whoever from the higher up is playing. He needs to unfold the truth.

He entered the building and saw Claud at the beginning of the staircase. The pool of blood circling around him. One bullet on his leg, another one on the stomach, and two more on the head.

His anger immediately rose at the scene. No one ever saw what happened. He thought about where the security for that night was. He thought about the people behind the surveillance cameras.

Or maybe they're dead too. He thought.

Booker heard some scrambling on his right side going to the janitor's room. He ran after it and saw a guy wearing all black with a mask and a cap. The man is taller than him by some inches and bigger. Booker hesitated for a while but also entered the room.

There were shelves of paint, a cabinet of brooms and mops, some used cloth on one area, and a shadow by the dustpans. He readied his gun and pointed it to the guy whose gun is also ready.

"Who are you?" He shouted.

"You know me pretty well, boy. You threw me to prison before. Ah never mind, we are done with that and I am done with my work so I better go."

The guy jumped on the glass window which may be the way why he got inside. Booker managed to land one shot on the man's leg but it may have not caused much damage. The guy was well-built. He has a big muscular body so maybe it didn't really hurt him. And the landing is quite easy because it's not that high.

Booker groaned and kicked some empty cans. He tucked his gun again and brushed his hands through his hair before going out again. He paced back and forth in front of Claud's body. And then a memory struck him.

The flash drive. He ran towards his office and went directly to his drawer to find one red flash drive.

"Where is it?" He checked all the drawers of his cabinet but found nothing. He groaned and kicked his chair. It bumped on his table which opened a very little drawer meant for hiding very small things. He checked it out and found it there.

"Of course." He smiled. "Old man chose this table for me for this purpose."

He hid the drive in his pocket and called 911 for help.

"Why didn't I do this when I arrived here?" He asked himself.

After ten minutes, an ambulance came to pick up Claud's body for autopsy along with some police who immediately questioned him when they arrived. The police asked what was the motive of the killer for killing Mr. Bennet. He said he did not know and left out the part about the flash drive. Some of his colleagues came and offered their condolence to him

Claud Bennet raised Booker and everyone in the building knew that. He was a street child who tried to rob Claud. Claud adopted him a week later. The old man doesn't have children because his wife can't bear a child. His wife also died because of cancer so he was left alone.

Booker was like a son to him. He fed him, dressed him properly, entered him into a police academy, and gave him a position in their detective agency.

Booker was the man he is now because of Claud and he will do anything to get the justice he deserves and uncover the secrets inside the flash drive.

He will unfold the unknown.
