It was a foggy night where the air was full with the smell of fear, streets were gloomy surrounded by dark where no one dared to go outside and take a walk.
Only cats and hungry street dogs were there, but even they can feel that something big is about to happen. Since you can see in those lifeless eyes "their fear" for an unknown power, sneaking through the night curtains without being seen. It is a common knowledge that animals have a six-sense, where they are able to feel things that we can't, and indeed they were.
The sky was darker than the dark itself. The stars were absent as if they sensed something and decided to hide behind the clouds. Even the only source of light, the source of hope couldn't stand in front of that spreading emptiness.
Walls stood one by one in a single line colorless and full of dirt. The wind is howling through the streets causing a weird sound echoing long the way. A strange sound as if a giant is walking through the shadows of the night. It is hard to see anything. Even if it is still early, the town has already turned into a ghost town.
She didn't believe it's nearly 9 now "damn, my mum is going to kill me for being so late" that's what Anna scolded herself while pushing the papers inside her bag and hurrying up down the stairs.
As usual, Anna lost herself in her study and forgot to check the time. Losing herself in the maze of her books, and through the theories of philosophers and writers. She pushed herself through the labyrinth of shelves in her college library and hurried to the doors as if her life depended on it.
For sure it was, her mom will have a piece of her soul as soon as she got home. She ran when the streets were empty and jogged when she noticed people.
Her mind was at a loss, she kept thinking about her dreams, and the weird nightmares she keeps having. Her thoughts debated whether to ask for help or just keep it a secret like in the past years. She was in deep thinking to the point that she wasn't able to notice the changes in the aura around her.
At first, she thought it must be the weird weather, which took over the place. Hesitantly, she cut her way through the rising fog that was spreading through the streets and casting the place into emptiness and shallowness.
She followed the street lamp lights. Spot after spot shielding herself from the blackness with the little power of light she had on hand. Giving her the right booze of courage in order to carry on, for she only enjoyed the early coming of winter with open hands. Forgetting her troubles and fears for a second. And the nagging sound inside of her mind. Warning her that something really wrong and bad is about to happen.
She kept walking holding her bag closely, to her: just a bit longer am almost there, she kept repeating to herself.
She was alone, vulnerable, in a deserted street. She pushed herself as her instinct told her that she wasn't alone. Someone was definitely there, watching her from afar. She ran and walked while all sorts of alarms rang inside of her head. Her eyes roamed the area, just making sure that she is still safe. She was not far from home, just a turn and her house will be in her sight. Still, these piercing eyes burning her back never faded.
She was being watched from earlier this morning,, but she kept ignoring it. Saying she was just too paranoid. However, her racing heart and breathless lungs now proved her wrong.
Suddenly thunder illuminated the sky. The clouds are long since they covered the moon and pulled the place into a coffin of nothingness. She clutched her purse into her chest, and stopped in her trek.
She wasn't alone, she definitely was aware of that by now, for it's no longer just a hunch.
The sky cracked again and she felt herself uncontrollably jumping a few steps backward. "What the hell is going," she cursed her dam luck, but before she could do anything about it, thunder bolted another time just a few feet behind her. Leaving a wide circle of dark, burned ashes. Few flames danced in the air by the force: playing with the wind a bit as the smelly scent of burning asphalt entered her nostril.
Her body shook. Her eyes were wide open trying to focus on the things around her. Her brain for sure was blank as an empty record and only her instincts were the ones operating her body. She was a shell of fear, and God only knows how she was able to stand.
The air around her changed and fog raised from the ground covering the whole place. A black silhouette moved between her vision: left, right then left then right again. It danced around her in a circle, moving faster and faster while she turned in her spot trying to simulate its movement.
Whoever was following her, finally decided to show himself and she understood that whatever was her next move would decide her life. To live or to be another dead body in the morgue by morning. She pooled her bag tighter to her body and readied her legs for the run of the year, and as the creature emerged from the mist beneath her, she ran.
She ran like she never did in her entire life, while the echoed sound of the man laughing behind her, sent a paralyzing wave into her already numb body.
"Run little lamp, run away, I love it when my dinner is giving me the chase." His laughter sung beautifully through the air, pushing her more on the verge of collapsing.
She screamed with all the power she had, begging inside her for someone to come to her aid. But no one was there. She was alone running around, and holding her life between her hands. Like a lost sheep in the large forest running from the bad wolf as the sky kept crumbling and the rain started hammering above her.
But not for long, he caught her from behind yanking her back towards his chest, hold her fragile body to his. She couldn't see him, only feeling his roaming hand on her skin. Breathing her scent like she was a beautiful rose in a decaying field. She kicked and screamed, and scratched his arms. She pushed, and bit into his palm that stretched, covering her mouth. However, he didn't even flinch. He enjoyed her despaired attempts to save herself.
