Chapter 1 - Prologue

A thousand years have passed since the entire world was divided because of the "Great Battle", a vicious fight that occurred between the sisters Serenity and Solar. The sisters were separated because of their mutual love for an Oceanus- someone who lives in the sea. The Oceanus were like fish—they possessed a tail.

Lexus had visited the King of the Oceanus in the kingdom of Austa to ask for Serenity's hand in marriage. The King and Queen immediately accepted his request.

Solar became jealous of her sister, and this caused her to plot the murder of her own sister. Upon hearing of this, Lexus immediately left with Serenity. They both headed for the ocean.

When Solar found out about Lexus and Serenity's escape, she told her parents a made-up story about Lexus kidnapping Serenity and all of Austa desperately searching for her.

It wasn't long before Serenity's own father murdered Lexus. Serenity was outraged, the heavens dimmed and she pulled Solar up into the sky.

And that was the start of the "Great Battle" that gave destruction to the lands of the Earth, strong lighting, thunder that caused the deaths of many Austans and Oceanus.

Because of what happened, Queen Amalia decided to separate the two and in turn, the people of Austa were also torn apart.

Every time the skies dim, Serenity brings darkness among the people who, upon stepping into the light, will die in her hands. In turn, every time the sun shines, Solar brings light to the people, who, upon stepping into the darkness, will die in her hands.

That is why the Serenians have a mark shaped like a moon on their forehead, and the Solarians have a mark that's shaped like the sun in the same place. Serenians and Solarians are prohibited from being together, lest a war breaks out again.

"Alright, children, go to sleep. It's late." Mother said. She closed the book containing the story of Serenity and Solar.

"It's sad to think that they were sisters and they behaved that way, right, mother?" I asked and immediately hugged my sister, Reina.

"Which is why you two sisters should love each other. You shouldn't replace one another for anyone," Mother said. She kissed us both on the forehead.

She left and went to her room. My sister immediately lay down while hugging her pillow.

I stood up, opened the window, and observed the stars that were shining above.

"The stars are beautiful every night." I sighed. I went back to our bed and closed my eyes.

I woke up to the sun hitting my eyes—it was morning. I saw Mother busy cooking our food.

"Mother, what are we? Solarians or Serenians?" I asked, which caused my mother to turn her head towards me.

"Neither, my child. We are but mortals who are living in this world." She told me. I took a peek at what she was cooing and replied,

"Mother, I want to be a Serenian. I want to be just like the moon and give light to a dark world."

Mother smiled and engulfed me in a warm embrace.

"I hope that you and your sister are always safe." Mother said. I felt my shirt dampen—my mother was crying.

"Mother, please don't cry. I promise that I'll always look after my little sister." I assured her. I gave her a smile and she smiled back. At least I made her slightly happier by saying that.

"Call your sister and have breakfast." Mother said. I politely obeyed.

"Reina, it's time to eat, come on" I told my sister. She immediately got up and put down her doll.

Just as we took our seats around the table, Reina asked,

"Mother, where's father? You said he's just somewhere far away."

Mother was speechless. Reina fell quiet and didn't speak another word.

"He'll come home. Now, eat well so that when he comes, you'll be stouter." I smiled at my sister, who, though unconvinced, started eating her food.

After a few hours, nighttime fell once again. After Mother told us another story, she went back to her room.

For reasons I didn't know, I felt like the stars in the sky were calling me, so I went out to observe them once again. Suddenly, a woman grabbed my arm. Her eyes were a deep shade of blue and she had an upside-down moon-shaped mark on her forhead..

She pointed a knife at me. I screamed for help, but she held me closer to her.

Mother went out of her room, restless. Upon catching sight of the woman holding me, she immediately attacked her.

Mother said something that I couldn't quite understand.

"Let her go, she isn't the chosen one!" Mother said, but the woman didn't listen. She whistled and a myriad of people bearing the same mark as hers appeared.

A man spoke, and I was surprised because he knew my mother.

"Why, Celest? Why did you turn your back on us for your love child with a Solarian!" He yelled. He was about to stab Mother when the mark suddenly appeared on Mother's forehead.

Her eyes transformed into a deep blue color.

"Traitors should be executed." A woman said. They charged for Mother, but thankfully, she was able to dodge their attacks.

Mother threw a knife at the woman who was holding me, who then loosened her grip and let me go.

"Luna, take Reina and hide in the corner." Mother instructed. I ran to our bedroom, then I saw that I was already holding Reina. We were both held by a man with a moon-shaped mark on his forehead.

"Mother, help us!" I screamed. I saw that my mother was slowly getting more and more wounded.

"Luna, please forgive me. This is the only way…" Tears fell from her eyes as she spoke in a language that I didn't understand.

"Et utrumque eorum defluet et prae oculis quis et qualis es, et vivat in altera vita mortalium qua parte mundi. Non apparebit ante oculos tuos et quod signum erit, nisi recta sunt ex tempore, ex hoc. Vestri 'abiit, nunc! (The both of you will disappear and lose the memories who and what you are, you will live where the mortals live. The marks on your foreheads will not show until you are of age, you won't remember anything starting now. Now!"

Reina and I began to disappear and then suddenly, I lost all consciousness.
