Chapter 25 - The Unknown

Tyler Roberts

Tears overflowed in Tyler's eyes as he watched his best friend since childhood came back to life. Kris held a special place in Tyler's heart as his buddy since childhood. When Tyler's and Leo's parents passed away from a fire that broke out in their apartment, the twins were to live on the street after the funeral. They were humans by then, so no one cared to look after them. On a fated day, after a week of their parents' funeral, they met their saviour. Kris had gone for a night stroll on the road that the twins lived. When he passed by his eyes caught the two small figures that coiled together in a cold corner of the ally. Kris had always been a curious lad, so he got closer to take a better look. His heart melted when he saw two boys with the same appearance lied on the cold, hard floor. They reminded Kris of himself and his twin brother, Mike. So he brought the boys to the house of Mackwood family, giving them shelter and food. Turned vampires mostly consisted of orphans, so they did not have any problem with getting their names on the yearly turned vampire list, once they turned eighteen.

Tyler was grateful for Kris with all his life. If Kris had neglected them on that fatal day at the ally, they could have been six feet underground by now. But because of Kris's kind heart, they had lived a life, that they could never imagine. They were at the Mackwood household ever since they were small, so they were considered as the third and fourth masters of the Mackwood family, while Kris and Mike were the first and second masters. Even though David Mackwood was a cold man, he always had a softer spot for the Roberts twins. He considered those boys as his own blood, despite them being total strangers. Truthfully, before Tyler came to China, David relied mostly on Tyler, instead of his own elder son Kris. Kris never felt jealous of his father's care for Roberts twins. He understood that his father had a hard time getting over their mother's death, and he knew that deep down his father still cared for them. He was grateful for his father for all the love he gave for the twins, they were good boys and they deserved it more than anyone.

Ever since the day that he set his foot on the Mackwood house, he had sworn to himself that he will protect all three of his brothers with his life. After he graduated, he wanted to save more people. When Tyler said this to David, he had arranged a post in Chinese law enforcement, to Tyler. Even though David originally wanted Tyler to work back in Canada, Tyler was attracted to China. Few weeks after his arrival he found the source for his attraction, his one, and only mate, Wei. Kris was the first person that Tyler had told this news. Ever since childhood, if Tyler had a piece of news, secrets, anything, Kris was the first person he shared them with. Finally, when Kris announced that he was going to come to China, Tyler was over the moon. He was going to get together with his brother again. And when Kris finally found his mate, Tyler lawfully handed Kris to Lan, himself. He was proud of himself as a good brother, until that night, seven weeks ago. Tyler was terrified when he saw that nightmare, he was more terrified when it became a reality.

Tyler could not explain the emotions he felt when he saw Kris lying beside the bed, drowning in his own pool of blood. It was a mixture of pain, remorse, and guilt. He had failed as a brother, his brother was at the brink of death and he simply had no idea how to save him. He had spent a dreadfully long day, watching over the pale body of his brother, that laid motionlessly on the bed. When Leo and Mike arrived, he finally got some spirit to move on and try to correct his mistakes. When Tyler heard the news about the babies, he had no idea how he should feel. Obviously, he should be happy as he was going to become an uncle, but his heart clenched in pain as he thought of all the pain and suffering that Kris needs to go through to bring them to this world. Tyler, with all the others, had started to lose hope when Kris did not wake up, even after two weeks of continue sleeping. He knew that the babies were draining Kris's strength, but Tyler could not do anything, he was utterly helpless and he hated it. He was the one that proposed the abortion, but Mike had told him to wait until Kris woke up.

When Kris finally woke up, Tyler could not utter a single word about abortion. The light of hope on Kris's face made him go mute. When Kris smiled with pure hope, it felt like a thousand knives were piercing his heart. Tyler could not take it anymore, so he finally called off his idea. He swore to himself again, that this time, no matter what happened, he was going to protect his brother and nephews, until his brother-in-law returned to them. He spent seven long weeks, watching his brother slowly dying, unable to do anything about it. His heart momentarily stopped when he received the call from Leo this evening, telling that Kris had gone into labour. He rushed home with Theo and waited for really long six hours in the living room until he heard the fatal cry of his newborn nephews. Tyler's heart flooded with relief as he ran into Kris's room and saw that both the mother and the babies were fine. Tears of happiness rolled down his cheeks as he looked at the small bundles of joy, that Kris had in his arms. He could feel the power waves of the babies from the place he stood. They were quite powerful, and Tyler understood how much pain and suffering Kris had to go through to bring them to this world.

But his happiness crumbled to the floor when Kris closed his eyes again, he didn't particularly say anything, but the way that his eyes lost its brightness, shouted to the world that he will not open them again. Tyler was about to go insane when he finally heard a knock on the door. He was frozen when he saw the face of the old man that he had been searching for the past few weeks. He was enraged, but the solemn look on the old man's face told another story to Tyler. It said that he knew a way to save Kris, and just like that Tyler believed him. He went back to the living room with the others and anxiously waited, pacing across the room. A blinding light spread all across the house and in an instant he dashed into Kris's room. Nothing had changed, the two angels were sleeping peacefully on the bed while Kris laid there motionlessly. But something had changed, Kris looked healthier and alive than a few minutes ago.

Tyler was stunned with the sudden improvement in Kris's health, but at the same time, he was grateful for the old man that made this miracle happen. Holding back his tears with a great force, Tyler heartily thanked the old man and excused him. Few minutes had gone by when Kris's eyelids finally fluttered. The pair of big jet-black eyes that Tyler thought he would never be able to see again, opened with the same twinkle in them. He was back, Kris was finally back, and this time there was no way in hell that Tyler would let him die. He was going to make sure that his brother and the little angels are safe until Lan finally returned to Kris. Tyler wordlessly stared at Kris, with glassy eyes. Kris finally noticed the big gorilla with teary eyes and smiled,

"Come here, you big boy."

Kris playfully said stretching his arms into a big hug. Tyler did not spare a second and jumped into the embrace that he had missed so dearly. Tyler was a silent person in nature, but he always craved Kris's hugs in a weird way, since childhood. Kris was a kindhearted individual who obliged to anyone's wish. So he wholeheartedly gave all the hugs that Tyler craved for.

"Now, now, don't cry."

Kris coaxed Tyler in a gentle voice like a mother soothed her child. Kris had been the family that Tyler never had, so he was used to this kind of treatment from Kris. After a few seconds in Kris's arms, Tyler finally calmed down. He broke out from the embrace, blushing, embarrassed of the way he acted sentimentally in front of everyone.

"So, where is he?"

Kris asked everyone that stood in the room.

"Who?"

Mike questioned back with a puzzled look on his face.

"My guardian."

Kris replied. Everyone looked amazed. They had no idea what Kris was talking about. Kris also understood it and changed his question.

"Where is the man that saved me?"

Kris asked this time. Tyler gave out a small smile,

"You will be surprised when you see him."

Tyler replied while Mike huffed in annoyance.

"He's in the living room."

Mike replied with a distaste in his tone. Kris gave out a small smile and said,

"Well then, let's meet him."

Tyler nodded his head and said,

"I'll ask him to come."

Tyler left the room with these words and headed to the living room. The old man was sitting on the couch, his eyes closed. Tyler went to him and kept his hand on the old man's shoulder. The old man slowly opened his eyes and asked,

"Is he awake?"

Tyler nodded his head and replied,

"He's asking for you."

The old man stood up and followed Tyler into Shen Wei's room. A small gasp escaped Kris's lips as he saw the old shaman entering his room.

"You-"

Kris whispered in a low tone. The old man smiled and bowed,

"I am Lee, your quarternix guardian, at your service, master."

As those words left Lao Lee's mouth, everyone in the room gasped in surprise. They had no idea about Kris's nature, so they had no idea what quarternix is, in the first place. Kris slowly signed Tyler to leave the room with everyone else and Tyler nodded understandingly. He got everyone and left the room leaving Kris, Mike, and the old man at the room, closing the door behind him as he exit.
