"Hey!"
I stopped walking and waited for Jiya to get to me.
"You haven't been telling me your duties in Alax for the past few weeks! What the heck is that about?!"
What happens in Alax… stays in Alax.
I chuckled, scratching my head in guilt. "I'm sorry, Jiya. They're pretty strict with privacy and I can't really say that much about the happenings inside the lab otherwise they'll have me electrocuted in a chair."
Her eyes widened. "No way! Really?!"
Somewhat but no.
I bobbed my head anyway. "For some reason, they have eyes on all of their interns and staffs if ever one speaks of something regarding the matters inside the lab. I won't risk having get shot by a sniper from one of the assassins."
A little far-fetched but Julia's a lot more gullible than she looks.
She'll easily buy this.
She covered her mouth with her hands in shock. "That's terrifying! Oh my Lord!"
Really gullible.
I laughed at this. "Anyway, what I can tell you is that there's more to Alax that what meets our eyes. I wouldn't have expected a lot of things if I haven't experienced it myself. It's crazy in there, Jiya. Everyone there is crazy!"
She started smacking her head, shrieking like she was being mobbed by a hobo. "I want to experience it so bad! All these information you're giving me is making me want to go to jail for trespassing!"
I laughed even harder.
Julia just has the simplest mind.
"And I'm currently working under Dr. Wells."
She froze.
She literally froze.
"He's quite the role model, if I do say so myself."
Remembering everything that had happened in the lab for the past few days I've been working with his team makes me laugh. You'd think everyone in Alax would be serious and dead terror to the staffs but they were so humble and the most down to Earth person I've ever met. I'm not sure if I'll keep up with their high energy but at least they're influencing me to be in my best condition whenever we work.
"THE DR. WELLS?!"
I flinched at the loud sound of her voice, ringing over my ear.
"HOW IN THE WORLD ARE YOU WORKING WITH THE DR. GENESIS WELLS?!"
I ask that myself as well, to be honest.
"I don't know. Some kind of recommendation from Professor Faux."
"YOU WERE RECOMMENDED BY PROFESSOR FAUX?!"
I can't count the amount of times she startled me with her unnecessary yells. "Keep your voice down. I don't want to get shot by an assassin remember. If I die, you won't get these intels from me."
She slouched down, covering her face as if she was the one who will get shot – which was never happening. "What the heck?! Why didn't you tell me that you started working for Dr. Wells?!" She leaned closer to me, whispering in exclaim.
I shrugged.
"Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god!"
That is.
The next day at my intern, the lab was a lot busier than normal. As I was preparing some coffee for the senior executives, Magna suddenly walked up to me with her usual boss bitch face. Her heels were even higher than most days. I wonder if she's doing this – all the blings and whatnot – to make people notice her.
"Just because you were invited to be a part of Dr. Wells' team, doesn't mean you're better than me."
It kind of does.
Only the best people gets to work under Dr. Wells and to be a part of that now means that he acknowledges my knowledge and skills in the field.
In the end, what matters is I know that myself. I got no time defending myself over someone who is over self-centered. I didn't need to let Magna know that because I'm sure she knows this fact as well.
"I never said I was." I replied, with a sigh.
"Don't talk to me."
You're the one talking to me though.
I squinted my eyes at her who spun around to walk away from me, walking like the office was her runway. Regardless, she must be good at something too if she got here as an intern from Princeton.
"Code red."
I was surprised when Hiro suddenly leaned closer to my ears to whisper me that.
"Katherine said we're needed there as soon as possible."
Code red?
As soon as possible?
Hiro and I made our way to the elevator to head to Dr. Well's lab. I haven't experience a code red before. I've read the Intern's manual regarding code reds and it only speaks of underlying dangers that is currently happening in a certain lab that we must attend to instantly. Code reds are usually defects or trespasses from the media, or intruders from other tech companies. Other than that, I can't imagine what code red could mean at this point.
As soon as we reached the lab, there were shattered glass everywhere. Papers and different files were all over the floor. There was a weird buzz echoing inside the lab and I can't really tell what it was.
I frowned, scanning the lab and I couldn't see any signs of Dr. Wells or Katherine or Francis.
"Something must have happened!" Hiro yelled trying to make himself audible from the loud buzzing that can be heard. "Let's split up! You go to the right wing, I'm going to the left! We'll meet back here in the center!"
I nodded in agreement.
We both ran to different directions and I started opening the rooms.
The place was a mess. It's like a tornado or a tsunami hit this area. I was panting so hard from all the running and the anxiety that I was feeling. My chest felt so heavy that it's almost telling me that this is how my life will end.
"Alexis!"
I turned and saw Francis under a table in a room I just opened. "Francis! What happened?!"
He suddenly pulled me down to dock over the table as he was doing.
I stared at him in confusion.
His head was covered with a brown paper bag. It looked crazy but maybe he had his own reasons. "The Mole Bullet!" He said in between the heavy breaths he was taking. "When we did a dry run for the new equations and the modified chip—"
The mole bullet?
"—the electrodes branched out in the air and it went crazy! There must have been a virus or a mistake in the equation that made it like this!"
The mole bullet this all this damage?
What would have happened if it actually touched the neurons?
I can't imagine.
"Hiro said to meet in the center! We should head back there and get out of here!"
"We got to be careful!" He exclaimed. "The bullet reacts to brain waves!"
Reacts to brain waves?
"Here!" He threw a brown paper bag at me, the same as what he was wearing over his head. "The properties of this paper blocks the bullet from sensing the brain waves!"
I unsurely wrapped the bag over my head and we both ran back to the center. Katherine and Hiro were already there and they both had newspapers wrapped around their heads. I'm guessing Katherine figured as much as Francis did.
"I told you to make sure the equations were right, you dumbass!" Katherine exclaimed as soon as we reached them.
"I did! I don't know what happened, okay?! It never reacted like this before!" Francis yelled back.
"Let's not blame each other and head out for now!" Hiro shouted, stopping the both of them from arguing.
"He's right! It's not safe to stay here any longer!" I added.
If the mole bullet is this strong…
The moment I looked back to take in everything that I just witnessed here – the shattered glass partitions, the papers, the hard efforts of everyone who worked here – a bullet with thin spider-like legs was already flying towards my face and before I knew it, everything was black.
Alexis…
I won't let anyone hurt you…
Remember that.
The electricity in my body ran through my veins. It's tingling all of my veins, my organs…
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING LADY?! ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL YOURSELF OR SOMETHING?!"
