"What? Addison, wait! Where are you going?" Zoey chased after me as I walked back to the café.
"Home. We're going home. And we're not listening to that psychopath Sherry."
"Scarlet."
"I don't care who she is. If anything, she's crazy. Stay away from people like that Zoey." But she didn't seem convinced. Zoey's curiosity always got her in trouble and I was the one who bailed her out every time. I unchained my bike and got on about to peddle off. I heard Zoey's chains rattle and my shoulders relaxed slightly.
We pedaled down the side of the street and turned down our private property road. It was three miles into the woods. Not a single soul other than our Dad, Izzy our maid, Zoey, and I lived out here. I don't even think our house registers on Google Maps. I always found that odd.
I hopped off my bike as soon as I stopped in the driveway and charged through the kitchen door. Izzy was sitting at the counter reading a magazine. The room smelled of lemon Clorox cleaner. She must have just finished cleaning for the day.
"How was school?" She asked, flipping the page before looking up.
Great! We were picked on by Carly again. There's a new kid in my anatomy class that I'm pretty sure wants to kill me. Apparently, I can hear a dog whistle and have the strength to punch a hole in a cement wall. Oh, and someone walked up to us at the café, and told us our mother wasn't dead. Completely ruined our time there. We didn't even get what we ordered before we rushed out chasing the psychopath giving us the info. They disappeared after crossing the street telling us to go straight to our room and not let anyone in.
"Average," I shrugged. Zoey came inside and I gave her a look so she would keep her mouth shut.
"How about you Zoey?" She asked.
"Alright. I guess." She put on a fake smile. I scoffed and went upstairs to our room, shut the door behind me not expecting Zoey to follow. I collapsed on my bed and pulled out my earbuds to listen to music.
"Where's your sister?" I jolted, dropping my phone on the floor, and leaped off my bed completely caught off guard. It was her. The psychopath was in our bedroom casually sitting up on top of my bed panel.
"How the hell did you get in here?"
"I used to live here? There's no way you can keep me out. I know every entrance and exit."
"That's it, I'm calling the police." I picked up my phone from the floor ready to dial 9-1-1. But Scarlet was too quick. She grabbed my phone and crushed it with one hand, letting the pieces fall on the floor.
"What is wrong with you?"
"You're not listening to me, Addison. I have answers to questions you've wanted to know your entire life. You may as well stop fighting. Your anger might cause you to break something else."
"You just crushed my cell phone with your right hand!"
"Super strength, get used to it. Occasionally it works to your advantage."
Before I could respond, Zoey opened the door and saw us. A grin spread across Scarlet's face and her eyes began to glow again. She's not human.
"You're right I'm not human. Good observation Addison."
"But I didn't—"
"Oh, I know, but you have very loud thoughts. You haven't learned to block others from hearing them. You'll learn how to do that with time. Just how I was able to communicate with you and Zoey. Telepathy works in weird ways."
Zoey stood in the doorway unable to move, "What are you?" She stared at Scarlet intimidated.
"Shut the door. It's time you learn about your mother."
