Chapter 9 - High society

"What do you two think?" Weng Tonghe asked him and Wei Xiaodan. "Should we leave this boring classroom for once?"

"Sure." Wei Sha scribbled a few more words before closing his notebook. Over the years, he wrote three books full of information, two of which he knew by heart. 'At least I haven't spent my time in here for nothing.'

"Yay!" Wei Xiaodan had a more carefree demeanour.

'She doesn't watch her step.' Weng Tonghe hadn't warned him for no reason because Wei Sha faced assassination attempts every other year now. Meanwhile, Wei Xiaodan acted as if such things didn't affect her childhood.

As Wei Sha thought and began to leave, he bumped with her.

"Watch out!" She snapped.

"Calm down," he said while struggling to pass her. "We've talked about this." Yet he didn't get far.

Wei Xiaodan blocked his exit.

"Say sorry."

"I will not." Wei Sha turned away from her. 'This is the fifth time she's done this.'

"Say sorry!" She insisted, hopping over his desk to once again block his leave.

Wei Sha rolled his eyes. 'She's such a pain in the ass!' The Wei Xiaodan he had interacted first was different in every aspect. 'Wait!' he came up with a crucial piece to solve the puzzle. 'The me she interacted with back then was different. . . Everything is different. For all!'

"Hey!" Of course, the current Wei Xiaodan, who waved her hand in front of his face, was still a problem.

"I'm not going to say sorry." Then again, his realisation meant that it would be hard for him to have a positive relationship with her.

Wei Sha turned towards the door.

Wei Xiaodan attempted to block him.

Before she could do so, however, he sprinted out of the classroom.

"Just forget it," he said while walking after Weng Tonghe, who like always acted indifferent to their constant squabbles.

"Teacher." Weng Tonghe hadn't gotten far. "Are you going to show us something special?"

"Yes," he said while continuing to walk.

"What is—"

"Hey!" Wei Xiaodan shouted from behind. "Don't you think this is over before I say so!"

Wei Sha glanced behind him, seeing her stride towards him with steps that didn't linger on the ground one bit.

Not wanting to give her any satisfaction or fuel to continue the squabble, Wei Sha began turning his head back. But, as he had turned ninety degrees, he noted four unfamiliar demons on a side corridor. Their skin blue in colour, clothing yellow. 'What is the Suar Family doing here?' He got a thought out before seeing them draw swords.

"Assassins," he yelled, jumping backwards.

Hell was let loose in a second as Weng Tonghe called his Terrenean Giant Tortoise to their defence. The green tortoise manifested in such a tight space created room for itself by smashing down walls and entire corridors till it fit.

At the same time as Weng Tonghe himself rushed at the Suar Family assassins summoning their bonded creatures, Wei Sha rushed to protect Wei Xiaodan, who he believed to be the assassination target.

Arriving there in a flash, he told her, "Stay behind me." His left hand signalled her to stay back while the other drew his sword.

Not looking nor waiting for a response, Wei Sha braced to meet one of the assassins. Weng Tonghe's tortoise had managed to crush one of the opposition's bonded creatures already, yet they were still at a four versus seven disadvantage — counting bonded creatures. And Weng Tonghe couldn't block them all with such short notice.

"The Suar Family wants your head!" a female assassin charging at them delivered threats, which didn't hide their motive.

Wei Sha didn't respond, choosing to stay calm and block the charge.

Their swords hit with a clang as the Suar Family assassin attempted to brute force his way through Wei Sha's block. Not stupid when looked at the surface level; however, Wei Sha wasn't an everyday day ten-year-old.

For Wei Sha, the force brought down on him was manageable.

"This Wei will keep yours," Wei Xiaodan retorted as she from behind Wei Sha threw a gorgeous knife.

It hit the assassin's abdomen, piercing through her battle scales.

With Wei Xiaodan's hit came a flinch that Wei Sha exploited by retreating from the contest of strength and then swinging at the place not covered by scales, the head.

His sword didn't stop much when it sliced through the assassin's eyes and nose. The assassin's eyes popped, destroyed for eternity while most of her nose sliced off.

Not to stop there, Wei Xiaodan threw her special knives, which appeared to have no problem in penetrating through the thickest of scales.

The assassin fell to the floor.

A victory, but in the meantime, another assassin had disengaged from Weng Tonghe. Moreover, this one still had his bonded creature alive. A Red Wolf followed right behind the second assassin rushing at them.

"Wei Xiaodan, do your knives work—" A standard weapon wouldn't inflict any real harm against bonded creatures, it would inflict a negligible amount of blunt damage, nothing more.

"Here!" She handed one of her knives.

"Thanks." Without further consideration, he grabbed the knife's handle.

By then, the next assassin was close. And to make matters worse, the assassin's bonded creature overtook its master with a powerful leap.

The Red Wolf's mouth opened. It wanted to bite off Wei Sha's head in a single bite by the looks of it.

Wei Sha raised his hand, covered in scales to be between his head and the Red Wolf.

A hand presented to it as a free meal made the Red Wolf take a bite at it.

When its teeth clamped on the bait, Wei Sha let out a humph. Yet, it was not pain he humphed for, but for discontent with the creature's foolishness and short-sightedness.

Sure, the Hell Wolf had bitten his arm, but it brought no major pains. And now he could counteract.

The counteroffensive began by Wei Sha, driving his bitten hand towards the floor.

As his bitten hand proceeded downward with the Red Wolf, Wei Sha's free hand followed with the knife aiming for his opponent's throat.

From the corner of his eye, Wei Sha saw how the assassin reached an arm's distance. But before the assassin's sword sliced his neck, Wei Xiaodan came from behind him to block the blow.

With his rear secured, Wei Sha focussed on the finishing blow.

Wei Sha smacked the Red Wolf against the floor. Then, as the beast's eyes still blinked from the collision, the loan knife pierced its throat.

Also, to make sure it died before its next lungful of air, Wei Sha didn't stab it just once. As he, in the span of a second, stabbed the creature ten times.

"End him!" Wei Sha shouted as his hand came out from the tenth stab.

Of course, he didn't stay on the ground while shouting. Though he believed in Wei Xiaodan's prowess to finish the assassin, who should experience a mind-shattering trauma right about now.

Indeed, Wei Sha saw how the assassin's mind shattered as his connection to the beast severed.

Wei Sha had launched his attack, but before his strike reached anywhere near the target, Wei Xiaodan's petite hand drove a knife against the assassin's intestines.

Wei Xiaodan had acted a blink or two faster.

Wei Sha didn't speak as he redirected his now unnecessary attack to be a rush past Wei Xiaodan, savouring her kill by spinning the knife in the assassin's gut.

His focus went to examining the fight, still continuing as he rushed to take part in it.

Weng Tonghe's Terrenean Giant Tortoise brought pain on its opponents at a pace of its own. It had no real hurry, for its opponents weren't of a match.

"Hey!" At last, Wei Sha opened his mouth. On the other hand, his words weren't intended to trash talk, but to garner attention away from Weng Tonghe. "Leave the old man alone!" he spoke as if a kid who loved righteous foolishness.

His plan didn't pan out perfectly because Weng Tonghe responded first. "Boy, get out of here!"

"No need to save words Weng Tonghe, we know who Wei Sha is," an assassin replied.

"So you are— Oh." Wei Sha was going to continue. But Weng Tonghe seized the moment of confusion by sending out a swarm of attacks, killing the two assassins who had slackened their focus.

By the time Weng Tonghe sheathed his Katana, only a bundle of cut meat remained of the two assassins.

"Not bad," Weng Tonghe said.

"Shouldn't we have taken one alive?" What he had learned from Weng Tonghe was that capturing one's enemies alive would always be more profitable than executing them on the spot.

"Why?" Weng Tonghe asked before waving for the guards now swarming the scene to search the area.

Wei Sha raised a finger. "Because. . ." However, his brains didn't produce a sentence to support his suggestion.

"Every situation is its own. A theory learned beforehand can't be applied blindly on a developing situation."

"I see." Wei Sha nodded.

As he spoke so, both of their robes began swaying due to surges of wind coming from the sky.

Wei Sha glanced above, seeing what he had expected, Wei Dai.

"Suar Family," Weng Tonghe began to explain the situation to the descending Wei Dai. "They sent assassins after Wei Sha, Wei Xiaodan might have been on the list too."

Wei Sha, hearing this, cocked his head. Something about how Weng Tonghe worded his sentence confused him.

"The other families." Wei Xiaodan walked to be beside him. "They don't have the gut to try an assassination on me."

Wei Shat took a minute to internalise her words.

"You sure?" he asked. "That assassin you killed appeared serious, no?"

"Half-hearted, at best," she voiced a different opinion. "I'm not strong in the way you are."

The conversation ended there.

This Wei Sha didn't mind. He became engrossed with revealing the intent of her words, anyway. 'Not strong in the way you are?'
