Chapter 20 - A Chance (Part Two)

I don't know exactly what I want in a family. Since I don't much remember my own, I don't know what will make me feel comfortable.

I'm sure i will figure it out. I just don't want to be alone. I want to learn how to be social. I want to have friends who aren't only partly human. I want to be around people and not feel out of place. I want to be in control of myself and my memories. I don't want to kill or injure other people like Vincent wants me to. I can't become what he wants me to be. I'm not that way. I'm not evil. I'm not like him.

By the time I reach town, it's dark. The cold hit quick. It was warm one moment and then the next thing I know, I'm shivering and watching my exhaled breaths.

I don't know how it got so cold. And I don't know where I'm going to stay.

"Oh my, you poor thing!" I hear an unfamiliar voice cut through the icy atmosphere. My head snaps in her direction.

I can see the small woman's silhouette in the doorway of a brightly lit home. It looks warm to me.

My arms are wrapped tightly around my chest, trying to keep my body warm. My spine hurts from shivering so harshly. "H-Hi," I manage to stammer out to her.

"Dear girl, come here." The small woman comes up to me, grabbing my arm and pulling me into the cozy home. I don't want to fight her. This granny wouldn't hurt me.

She draws me to a brick fireplace in the living room. There's a nice dark green carpet I'm able to pad across all the way from the entry door to the fireplace. I sit on the ground, sighing at the heat of the flames.

The elderly lady leaves the room momentarily. She returns with a mug and a plate in her hands. She puts the plate next to me and gives me the mug as she sits next to me on the carpet. "Some cookies and hot chocolate should warm you up, Love."

I smile at her, inhaling the warming scent through my nose. "It smells amazing," I say.

"What's your name dear? Why were you outside this late?" She asks, I can see the genuine concern on her face.

"M-My name is..." I hesitate. I shouldn't use my real name if I'm hiding from Vincent. It will make it much to easy for him to find me. But I need to choose a name quickly. "My name is Faith," I tell the older woman. Her face wrinkles as she smiles widely. "I just got a little lost is all. You see, I'm new here."

"You poor thing. I did a similar thing when I was a child. Will your parents be worried?" She asks.

I shake my head. "They don't know I'm here yet. I wasn't supposed to be home until tomorrow, anyways."

"Well you're welcome to stay here with granny Marsha until morning. I'm sure you'll be able to find your home in the daylight."

I nod, "I will gladly stay at granny Marsha's until morning."

"I'll go get you a blanket and a pillow. You can sleep by the fire." She says cheerfully as she gets up.

She disappears upstairs for a while before running back down with a blanket and a pillow. She helps me get comfortable and softly hums until I fall asleep. Maybe this will be my home. I'll reprogram granny Marsha. She could take care of me.
