Chapter 1 - Chapter 2: Trust

Hena declared war on Vare 3 weeks ago. Hena has always been keeping an eye on Vare since the beginning. Vare was a great country, despite being so small. It had good location, and it had a lot of gold. The people we're prospering. Everyone was living a peaceful and happy life in Vare.

[Girl: Are you awake?]

I woke up the next day with the girl sitting next to me. I never got a good look at her, but wow, she's really pretty. Looks like she's here to check on me.

[Edith: I'm Edith Wiltone, and I'm going to take care of you for the time being. May I ask for your name?]

[Edwin: I'm Edwin Wilson, and thank you for everything that you've done to me. I'm forever in your debt]

[Edith: Don't worry about it. Just doing my job. Anyways, it's a pleasure to meet you, Edwin.]

[Edwin: The pleasure's all mine. By the way, what happened to my leg?]

[Edith: Your leg has suffered from a grade three MCL tear, and it will take one or two months to recover. Do you know what caused this?]

Two days ago…

[Edwin: CAPTAIN! WE NEED TO RETREAT NOW!]

We were attacking Esterfort. It was on a hill, and it was a bloodbath. They really had our number on this one. Too many soldiers have died already…

[Captain: SHUT YOUR MOUTH SOLDIER! THIS CRAP'S NOT OVER YET. JUST KEEP THEM IN BAY, AND WAIT FOR REINFORCEMENTS TO COME.]

I really didn't like where it was going. We already lost at that point. The only way to survive this is to retreat, but I had learned to trust the captain to an extent, where I could depend why life on him. He was a father figure to me, and everyone agreed that he's the most reliable soldier on the squad. I followed his orders willingly. I knew it was going to be alright. It's the captain after all. That's when I heard something bounce from a distance—

[Varean Soldier: GRENADE!!]

—An explosion. I rolled down the hill, and I felt my knee crash a rock on the hill, and the pain was unbearable. My squad was killed, including the captain, and I was all alone. I couldn't get up, so I crawled in one direction hopelessly looking for someone to help me. I tasted the dirt as I crawled, and I couldn't find any water until it miraculously rained. That's when I learned to survive this, I shouldn't trust anyone again. To live on, I shouldn't trust anyone again. To survive, I shouldn't trust anyone again.

As I told her that, she felt sorry for me, and she told me that she'll help me get back out at the battlefield as soon as possible.

[Edith: It's a miracle you survived with only an MCL tear.]

[Edwin: Yeah, but I don't think I can go through that crap again. The fact that it's a possibility makes me scared to death.]

[Edith: Look, you can lean on me, okay? Everything's going to be alright. Don't worry about those things. You'll survive this, okay? I can promise you that.]

She left the room. I was astonished. I never thought someone would say something like that. For the next few weeks, we talked, we ate, and we became great friends. It felt amazing. I never thought I could feel this way before. Maybe she is right. Everything might be alright. I can't even believe I started to believe those words.
