「Vis」 (Mana)
The 7th form of energy that permeates in the world (Gaia) and serves as a force that enables all those who can use magic to bring about phenomena.
Vis exists around the world, in living creatures, and residing in inanimate objects, all in different quantities.
For living creatures, they have a limit of Vis that they can absorb, and unfortunately some people are not gifted with that innate ability to gather Vis -leading some people to pursue witchcraft.
(The 6 forms of energy in the world are: sound, chemical, radiant, electric, atomic, and mechanical. Vis serves as the primordial energy that can create or enhance the other 6 forms of energy.)
「Magic」 (System)
The operational term used to describe the system where the 7th form of energy is predominantly used on.
「 Phenomena/phenomenon」
The operational term used to describe reactions brought on by magic. In layman's terms, it's the appropriate term to describe a miracle.
「Spell」
The operational term used to describe the action of a magus creating a phenomenon. Spells are essentially lines of codes performing a task that results in a phenomenon
It should be noted that the more complex a spell is, the more it consumes Vis.
「Spellcasting」
The operational term used to describe what medium a magus uses to create a phenomenon.
There are three forms of Spellcasting: Runes, Incantations, & Magic circles.
「Runes」
One of the simplest forms of spellcasting, wherein a magus will use the Gaian scripts and write them down temporarily or etch them into an object where upon empowering it with Vis from the magus or the surroundings, the rune will perform the spell, creating the phenomenon.
「Incantations」
The spoken form of spellcasting, where the magus recites the Gaian scripts and upon finishing the recitation the spell will be casted and drain the magus of Vis equal to the complexity of the spell.
「Magic Circles」
The complex form of spellcasting that involves drawing shapes inside a circle and forming a complex interwoven pattern. It's noted that magic circles and runes have a similarity as both are drawn onto objects and are required to be empowered by Vis either by the magus or the world, but that's the only comparison that can be made.
Drawing a magic circle proves to be more difficult than a rune, because while a magus can crudely write runes if they were to be even an inch off in drawing a pattern in a magic circle then the results would either be a dud or a backfire.
With runes the magus needs to write sentences that may not fit on the surface of the object they're writing on but with a magic circle they can be any size so long as they're able to draw the interwoven patterns perfectly.
Magic circles can be drawn in the air so long as the magus imagines drawing the pattern in their mind and projecting it, something that cannot be done with runes. Projecting magic circles with the mind is something no ordinary human can do without proper training.
Haphazardly projecting magic circles can led to some unfortunate results as backfires are more common when projecting magic circles than simply writing them.
Distinctions between the types of magi」
「Mages」
Practitioners of magic that have the capacity to absorb and store Vis in their bodies and are able to learn all forms of spellcasting.
「Witches」
Practitioners of magic with no capacity to absorb or store Vis in their body. To get around that witches would bind themselves to a familiar, any living creature that can absorb and store Vis for them. The familiar acts as an external battery while the witch is the one writing tasks.
Witches who do not have a familiar would instead use their life energy, converting it into Vis. Naturally it shortens the lifespan of a witch.
「Sorcerers」
Ancient practitioners who have a great capacity to both absorb and store Vis in their bodies and have knowledge pertaining to forgotten and forbidden spells.
