Chapter 4 - Making Progress II

It's been twelve hours or so since I've killed the Undead Archer and evaded the group of Goblins. The bow has been a great help since I got it. I was scared of it breaking, but it doesn't show signs of breaking at all. It was quite sturdier than I initially thought. To make sure I always had arrows on me, I'd pick them up after killing whatever I shot.

The arrows are wooden with an iron tip, which was pretty sharp. These were definitely made by someone who knew a thing or two.

I even got a bag to put my stuff in after killing a skeleton.

With this, I stored my monster drops and meat that I carved out from the loose Goblins around the prison.

At first, I believed that there was a single tribe of Goblins, but I was wrong. After killing a few of them, I noticed that most of them had tribal tattoos on them. Some were of a different color, others a different shape. I estimated that there were three different tribes of Goblin. They all seem to be at odds, trying to battle for supremacy over each other to take control of the prison.

Oh, I should take a look at my stats now. I should make sure if anything has changed.

NAME: Soma Kai

LVL: 7

HP: 190            MP: 100

STR: 19            LUC: 11

VIT: 19              INT: 10

SPD: 20            CON: 12

PATK: 16 (+15) MATK: 6

PDEF: 11          MDEF: 8

After I level up, each stat goes up by one, and I gain five points to use as well. So, after leveling up six times, I got thirty points to spend. I tried to distribute it well with the equipment I have on hand. Obviously, things can change in the future. I might end up becoming a mage or something, but I'm focusing on right now rather than then for now. When that first Undead was killed, they started coming out in groups of five, making it easy to grind the hell out of them without much effort.

My hunch from earlier was right. When I hit level five, the EXP requirement shot up to one thousand five hundred and then the next became two thousand.

While I should be at a much higher level since an average Undead usually gives one hundred and ten points of experience, I started to notice something.

The more I kill a particular type of monster, the amount experience given decreases per kill. So, it went down by quite a bit. But, this only happened when I killed another Archer. When I killed an Undead Fighter, it gave me another one hundred and ten points, and the next one decreased like it did with the Archer.

This actually makes a bit of sense. After experiencing something once, the next encounter should be a bit easier since you know what you're doing. Now that I've killed a few Archers, I know how to deal with them. I don't even need to use my Fighting Instinct skill to kill them.

Also, as a response to getting so many materials at once from killing a large group of Undead, the voice in my head said that I gained a new skill.

Auto-Gathering D LVL 1 : Acquired upon gathering a multitude of items at once. The user will automatically acquire items that are rank D and lower. They will be automatically stored in the user's inventory.

By inventory, it meant my pockets. I don't have an inventory yet. Maybe once I gain too many items for me to store on my person, I'll gain an inventory skill? I hope that's the case. And it better be soon.

Oh, my physical attack has changed too. This is because, at the time, the only weapon I had was my wooden sword. It only had plus five attack power. The bow has plus fifteen, so that's why the fifteen is there.

So much can happen within twelve hours. After killing my first Undead, it seemed like they were targeting.

I started seeing more of them than anything else.

What surprised me, though, was that a few Goblins were dead on the ground each time I fought one.

So, it's every man for themselves. That is until the monsters start banding together.

That would probably be the worst case scenario.

Graaaaaooooh. . .

Oh, speaking of Undead. There's one a few feet away from me.

I took out an arrow and pulled back on the bow. After aiming for its head, I released my fingers.

Kraaagh!

A body dropped after an arrow pierced through its skull. It fell with a quick thud.

As I walked over to it, the name above it disappeared. It was another Undead, but it wasn't an Archer or a Fighter. It was a Thief.

After killing my first Undead enemy, I started to understand how they came about, and why they act the way they do.

From the looks of it, they retain most of their original characteristics from when they were alive. So, Archers remained as Archers when Undead, and the same goes for thieves. I bet the same can be said about Swordsmen and Fighters.

Whenever they die, though, something comes off of them like they were possessed.

Makes me wonder if there's a Necromancer around here. They probably know that I've been killing their minions. I have no doubt in my mind that I'll have to confront them later. The best I can do right now is keep preparing for everything else.

It dropped a hood and a rusted dagger.

Instead of getting rid of the dagger, I decided to keep it.

Maybe I'll be able to learn a skill that lets me restore items? Because of that possibility, I'll keep it and any other rusted item. It's no use to me now since it has such a low attack value.

I pick up its bag, expecting an item to pop out of it.

But instead. . .

[ ITEM: LARGE BAG ]

[ RARITY: E-RANK ]

↳ "A common item used by travelers to store items. Due to its size, it can hold one-hundred items at once.

Finally!

After stripping the Undead of its items, I put all my crafting materials into the bag, and I cut the strap with the dagger.

Why? So I can tie it around my waist.

After killing a few monsters with my bow when I got the skill, my Bow Proficiency became level two.

It made me wonder what would happen when I max the level out. Maybe skills can evolve? If they can, then wouldn't Bow Proficiency become Archery afterwards?

There's only one way to find out, and that's to use it as much as possible. With it being level two, I have a 10% damage increase. It used to be a 5% increase.

I've neglected my melee weapons, though. Using the bow instead of my mace or sword has become second nature.

I'll probably switch once I get a better weapon. The mace is one handed, so it's reach is pretty short. I need to get really close in order to attack.

My wooden sword has the reach, but its attack power is poor.

But, there's more than just that on my mind. . .

*Sigh.*

Water is becoming a problem. I thought that if these Undead were Adventurers prior to turning, then one of them would have the brains to bring a canteen or something, but not a single Undead had one on them.

Honestly, my best bet is to find a leak somewhere and drink that. I thought that I'd find something resembling a bathroom or something, but I haven't seen one at all.

If I had a water spell then I'd be the happiest man alive. Maybe if I found a loose Goblin Mage I could loot a spell book from their corpse. But, I'd have to see it cast water to be sure that I'm fighting the right one.

The only kind of monsters I've seen are Undead types and Goblin types. Those minds of monsters would be seen in places like caves and crypts. This prison might have more than just those two.

But, if I can level up at least three more times, then I might be able to kill that Hobgoblin. I'd be climbing the food chain in this prison at an alarming pace if I did that.

I don't have time to be thinking about anything other than what is beyond the Hobgoblin. If there's anything stronger than that, then I'll have to hope that there are enough supplies at the Goblin camp to help me out, even if it is just a little bit. I really want that sword it has, too. Part of me even wants to go and find the camp right now and kill some monsters on the way there.

No, that would be risky. I should weigh my options.

I could do what I thought of earlier and kill the Hobgoblin while it's asleep, or I can continue grinding until I hit level ten. While I'm grinding, I'll probably gain more skills.

My eyes widened as I came up with a new idea.

What if the different tribes of Goblins aren't the same? Maybe another tribe didn't have a Hobgoblin as their leader?

I know which ones not to follow. The one I killed for the first time and saw walking around had red markings. The other ones I have yet to see in action are the ones with blue markings.

I'll focus on finding them. Hopefully my hunch is right and I can sweep an entire camp without much effort.

If I find a group of Goblins without a Hobgoblin with them, then that would be my chance to follow them. I don't have a sneak Skill, so I have to rely on my natural ability to not get caught.

While I searched through these dilapidated halls, my body grew accustomed to it. The darkness that once inhibited my ability to see is now my greatest ally. The lack of torches lighting my way showed signs of monster activity in the area, giving me the chance to strike.

My ability to hear has been enhanced as well. There hasn't been much noise since I've been awake in this new world, one I don't even know the name of. As a result, I've focused on faint noises for the most part. It seems not everything I do ends up becoming a Skill, or maybe it's my lack of effort in trying to make it a Skill.

Regardless, I've grown accustomed to the natural elements in the prison. It's not too different from a dungeon some would see in an RPG.

What did surprise me was the lack of "Large" enemies. By that I mean enemies that are larger than you'd expect. For example, a certain RPG series contains large spiders and large rats, along with another series that has large mosquitoes and ants. Large Spiders are common monster types, as spiders themselves can be pretty scary in the real world. But when you make them big? That's when it gets terrifying. I thought I'd encounter at least a few of those by now. Maybe the other monsters killed all of them?

No, that can't be the case.

Insects are too plentiful, so I doubt that all of them could be killed.

But, I hadn't considered the idea of there being multiple floors to this prison. For all I knew, I could be on the tenth floor. There are no windows in the cells, so knowing if that's true is impossible unless I find the entrance to the prison.

Man, this is starting to be a pain.

Whatever, I'll focus on finding a band of Goblins and following them. That's the best I can do right now.

I'll need all the supplies I can get, because I could be in the middle of a forest right now, and have to deal with tougher monsters out there than in here.

I decided to spend the rest of my time just thinking to myself, coming up with theories about the world outside of the prison and plans on how to survive said prison. I completely forgot about the world I once knew at this point. I was dead there, so there's no reason for me to whine about being away from it all.

I'm alive and kicking here, and I'm kind of enjoying it now that I'm getting stronger. Because of that, I wanna focus on what I'm doing in this world.
