Chapter 13 - Chapter 13

"Barbara!". Mum's voice woke me up from sleep. I checked my alarm clock it was just Six in the morning. The clock was set to wake me at half-past six. Why the hell is my mom waking me up this early?

"Get up Barbara. Breakfast is ready". Did mum make breakfast? Hmm, I should be suspicious.

I stood up and went to the bathroom to brush my eat. When I got to the dining room, mum and Simon were sitting, breakfast was served but neither of them was eating. They looked up when I came in.

"Mum insisted you came before breakfast began". Simon said and began digging into his food.

"OK, am here now".

"I just wanted to make sure we act as a family". Mum said.

"Really mum, really?".Simon said.

"Yes, Simon. I want us all to be a family once again and act like one".

"I don't know mum but maybe it would have felt more like family if Makaela was here and dad isn't such a jerk". Simon said and dropped his fork beside his plate.

I looked at Simon then I looked at mum. I could tell from the way they are exchanging glances that they know something I do not know. I wanted to ask them but didn't know how to.

"Mum I miss Makaela mum, I really do.....". I paused to study mum's reaction. She was almost crying. "I want her back mum."

"We all do my darling". Mum said.

"Well, I know Simon does but am not so sure about you. I still do not understand why you would leave your child to suffer in a rehabilitation centre".

"You won't understand Barbara. You won't because you are not trying to".

"Well make me understand mum. I am trying really hard to make all of this work. I am mum trust me, I won't be here if am not trying to make things work. I want a family, you, Makaela and Simon. I don't care of Mike is not a part of that family".

Simon smiled I could tell he was surprised I would want him to be part of my dream family. I turned to him.

"I love you, Simon, you are the best brother in the world. I must admit I didn't really like you when I first came here but with time I grew to like you. Where else am I going to get a brother that will drive me to school every morning". We both smiled.

"Speaking of school. How are you coping with your new school".Mum said.

"Don't try to change the subject mum".

"Am only trying to start a conversation here".

"I don't like my new school. I also do not respect the fact that you would admit me into a school without my consent. It's like you do not respect me and I feel really bad about it".

"It is the only school around here and its almost free".

"Mum I have got Millions in my trust fund. How could you not afford a private school?".

"The nearest private school is about forty-five minutes drive".

"Still not an excuse mum, there is something called a school bus".

"Am sorry darling, its just one year".

"Anyways I do not like my school. Everyone is so hostile and the environment is unfriendly".

"That is probably because they do not admit students in their final year".

"Oh, so you knew that yet you put me in such school. You have got to be the most selfish person in the world".

"My friend, the counsellor owes me a favour".

"Oh really. She said you were friends. Where did you meet".

"At Duncan high".

"Ohh really?".

"I attended that school.

My jaws dropped.

"Really, my mum and dad went there too," Simon said.

Mum stood up hurriedly and disposed of what remained of her food in the garbage bag.

"Am off to work kids. Be good".

"We will" We both answered.

"Barbara, enjoy your day".

"Oh, I won't"I threw my hands in the air dramatically.

"Join clubs, it will help you make new friends".

She shut the door behind her.

"Are you thinking what am thinking? "I asked Simon.

"Your mum, my dad and mum probably knew each other from high school".

"Now that's what I call a smart brother". I gave him a high five.

"Go and get ready".

"I will be ready in half an hour".

"That's way too long".

"Do the dishes. It will keep you busy".

I took my bath and put on my new school uniform. I wore a new pair of navy blue socks and black shoes. I looked into the mirror and was satisfied with my look. I went to the car and waited for Simon to do the dishes.

"I didn't know you were a millionaire". Simon said when we were in the car.

"My dad left me and my sister quite a fortune and though am not allowed to touch it yet except my trust fund which is for my and Mikaela's education".

We soon arrived at my school and he waved me goodbye. I walked into the school determined to have a better day.
