Chapter 9 - Dinner

Praesul kept trying to swivel my head around looking for our "mate" but I forced her into submission.

*You are going to give me whiplash you lovesick puppy!*

She growled at me then whimpered. I could smell him. The familiar woody spice scent filled my nostrils. My shoulders relaxed even though the smell was faint.

*He's here! Our mate!*

My green eyes refused to give her control. They didn't even flicker. I growled at her and she settled down slightly.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and sparks ignited under my bare skin. Turning around slowly, I inhaled musk and mint. Another intoxicating combination.

"Indicum? Your father said you weren't coming until tomorrow. How are -" Our eyes connected and I gasped.

*MATE!* Praesul screamed. This time her eyes took over but I caught her just in time. Turning the yellow orange back to green.

"-you?" I finish after a few moments pause.

"Regina! You look amazing! I, uh, caught an earlier flight. Are you okay? Looks like your wolf wants to say something."

"I'm peachy." I smile wryly. "She's just jealous I get to go to such fancy parties."

He laughs and it sounds melodic. "Well, they aren't that much fun to be at anyway."

"True. Wait, why are you here?"

"I was honestly dropping off something for my dad before heading to get freshened up. I literally landed and drove straight here."

I wrinkled my nose pretending that was a gross confession. "Straight to jail huh? Didn't pass Go or collect your $200?"

Again, his laugh rang out like the sweet sound of a song.

Oh Goddess, what are you doing to me? Two mates? Is that even possible?

"Well, I'd better get this over with. Let's catch up again soon!"

At the word "soon" Praesul swooned.

I sit in the same spot near the center of the long table.

Rex wasn't seated yet but we could smell his scent. Another empty chair sat next to his place setting labeled, "Alpha of Silver Pack Guest." So he had RSVP'd a plus one. Great.

The thought makes Praesul distraught, angry, and curious all at once.

*What's with you? Can you control your damn emotions for once?*

*Please touch him. Make it an accident. I need him!*

*Where was this with Indicum?*

*I was in shock over having two mates, get over yourself.*

*I've never heard of two mates before.*

*You'd better hope there are only two.* She snapped.

Fuck. I hadn't thought of that.

Rex took his seat next to mine. The empty seat beside him sat a pretty she-wolf. She had dark raven black hair and pale blue eyes. Her skin was so pale you could see her blue veins. Make-up was caked on thick. She looked like she stepped out of Hot Topic.

Praesul tried to growl but it only came out in my mind.

*Easy girl. I'll touch him for you but only briefly."

I could barely listen to the speeches and thank the attendants for serving us. Plotting how to touch him was difficult. He wouldn't mistake my glass for his again.

*Spill water on him and try to clean it up with a napkin. Also, feel to see how big his trouser snake is.*

*Wow! I was actually considering your idea before that last sentence. You pervert!*

She shrugged. I am a virgin but it's not like I hadn't fooled around. I've gotten to third base before. Praesul and I agreed we would never let it go all the way. Then there would be expectations and commitments. No, we were better off focusing our energy on our pack.

A server bumped me with a tray as he set down my food.

"Pardon me madam."

"No harm no foul." I shrugged his touch away.

A few moments later I notice Rex stiffen. He began smelling the air and turning in my direction.

Shit! I get up quickly and sprint, full speed in heels, away from the table. My heels break but I keep running. I don't stop until the room to my door is shut.

I notice my necklace has fallen down and landed tucked between my breast. Quickly, I change the chord back to its original long one. Then I use the last potion I have to disguise the trail of my scent. It only lasts for about six hours but by then it will have faded drastically.

The necklace takes 10 minutes to start working again. I sit on my bed, fully dressed, counting the seconds... 596. 597. 598. 599. 600!

I sigh in relief. I kick my broken heels to the floor and curl up in a ball. I'm still wearing the plum colored dress but I don't care. That was a close call.
