"Great! Isn't this wonderful!" I say, smiling through gritted teeth to my friend Chole who is sitting in front of me at the lunch table. My step sister, who I love dearly, comes into the school cafeteria not with her giggle of friends as she usually does, but with none other then Justin Flynn. My crazy ex boyfriend.
I wouldn't have minded if they walked into the lunch room together, because that could have been a simple unfortunate coincidence for her. But no, Lilly was hanging on Justin's arm like a lost child found its beloved parent. I quickly turn away and face my lunch again. I didn't have the appetite anymore. It was mystery meat tocos today, so there wasn't much of one anyways. I grab my milk and glare at the mutation of my lunch.
"Are you okay Liz?" Chloe asked as she looked over my shoulder. "Oh, never mind." She said as soon as she saw Lilly and Justin.
"Do you think they're dating now?" Alex asked. Alex Huder and I have been best friends since we were little. His dad and my dad are both fire fighters. When my mom died of cancer six years ago, Alex was the one who always would come to my house and try to cheer me up by either going to get ice cream, playing with me or just simply hanging out.
Alex has dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He works out every day before school with his dad so he's really strong. He's about six two and almost always wears a tank top. Today he's wearing a white T-shirt with some kind of logo I was unknown too. He was also wearing blue jeans and a baseball cap with his black sneakers. He only wears the hat when he needs a hair cut and is embarrassed about how long it is.
"I seriously hope they aren't, Lilly knows that Justin and I just broke up last month. I'd be kinda annoyed if they were dating because then I'd have to see his stupid face more." I reply with a salty tone. Lilly is just 15 and Justin's 18, that's not a good idea if they were actually dating.
"I don't see any of her usual friends with her... Great, now she's sitting with Justin at his table. Things aren't looking good," Chloe adds in a hushed voice so that no one but Alex and I can hear her.
Chloe Johnson is my other best friend. We've known each other for about three years now. We met when she came to school and we were assigned as science partners our freshman year. Since it's our senior year, we've gotten much closer because of the privileges that we get. Chole has fiery red hair and the looks of a model. Her figure alone has almost all the guys going after her. She is very active but also a huge book worm. We're on the track team together and have a meet this coming Friday.
I groan obnoxiously, "I am not looking forward to going home if he's driving her," I complained. Justin knows where we live since he has been there many times before in the two years that we dated. School just started last month and that's when I broke up with Justin. Ever since then, I feel like I see him more then when we were actually together.
"Liz, Lilly's coming over here," Alex warns me. I look behind me and am immediately relieved to see just my sister. Lilly gets close enough where I can here her voice while she's chatting to people on her way to my table over the dull roar of the high school cafeteria.
"Hey Lizzy! Has Dad texted you yet?" Lilly asked as she sat down next to me to my left. Lilly has blonde hair and brunette tips, which is the exact opposite of mine. We me not be related by blood, but we are one hundred percent sisters.
"No, was he supposed to?" I asked back.
"He was supposed to tell you that Alex's dad and him are still working on a fire shift and mom won't be back until late tonight because of her nurse training." She informed me. Lilly turned to Alex, "Your dad offered to let you spend the night at our house again if you want. Your mom apparently isn't coming back until tomorrow also." Lilly added.
Since Alex's mom is a wedding planner, she sometimes has to leave town for a few day and if our dads are on a shift together also, then he normally would stay the night. This would be the third night in a row.
"Okay, thanks. My mom texted me a few minutes ago that, that was the case. She should be back very soon though," Alex replied to her through the mouthful of mystery toco. He swallowed the rest with a sip of milk.
"Oh, I have a question," Alex suddenly looked up to meet Lilly's eyes.
"Sure, what is it?" She leaned in to hear his voice better. I too looked up and leaned in. I looked at Alex with concern and made my eyes large as a hint to not ask what I think he was going to say.
Alex looked at me and saw the hinting, but his curiosity made him ignore it. I didn't blame him that much though and I could see that Chloe was also thinking she knew the question. We all wanted an answer, but dreaded what it was.
"What's the deal with you and Justin? Are you guys dating or something?" Alex stared straight into Lilly's eyes and didn't blink. He has asked the question and we were all holding our breath for what the answer will be.
"No, not yet at least," She replied. My breath was released and my stomach twisted. 'What does that mean?' She turns to me with sadness and worry in her eyes "I know that you and him have dated for two years, but I think that I want to give it a go with him. I really like him."
